Ecology and Condition of the Ground Beetle Scaphinotus Angusticollis
Ecology and Condition of the Ground Beetle Scaphinotus angusticollis and Distribution of its Prey in Pacific Northwest Riparian Forests by Susanne L. Lavallee B.Sc (University of British Columbia), 1994 M.Sc (University of British Columbia, Zoology), 1999 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY In THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Forestry) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA September 2006 © Susanne L. Lavallee, 2006 Abstract I studied the population ecology of the flightless, forest-dwelling carabid beetle Scaphinotus angusticollis Fischer Von Waldheim (O. Coleoptera F. Carabidae) and several aspects of its body condition for their associations with forest harvesting. Comparison of population estimates revealed that catch-per-unit-effort estimates were not significantly different from more detailed analyses. In two years of trapping, S. angusticollis population densities were found to be significantly lower in clearcuts, as compared to 30 m riparian reserves and uncut forest, suggesting that riparian buffers provide adequate habitat to maintain populations of this terrestrial insect. Movement of S. angusticollis differed in the three habitats studied between years and treatments, with the greatest movement occurring in 30 m buffers in one year and in control sites the next. Clearcuts had the lowest amount of movement in both years. One of the known prey species for S. angusticollis, snails < 2 cm in diameter, were more abundant in clearcut habitat, with Ancotrema hybridum the most abundant species. Canonical correspondence analysis suggests that only A. hybridum were positively correlated with plant cover, and that other species abundances may rely on coarse, downed wood as cover. -

RIV. PIEM. ST. NAT., 21, 2000: 115-152 LUIGI BISIO * SECONDO CONTRIBUTO ALLA CONOSCENZA DI CARABUS DEL SUBG. ORINOCARABUS DEL PIEMONTE: CARABUS PUTZEYSIANUS, E IL GRUPPO FAIRMAIREI-CENISIUS-HETEROMORPHUS (Coleoptera Carabidae) SUMMARY - The second contribution to the knowledge of the Carabus species of the subg. Orinocarabus in Piedmont, Italy: Carabus putzeysianus, and the fairmai- rei-cenisius-heteromorphus species group. This work is the results of twenty years of researches about four Carabus spe- cies of subg. Orinocarabus (putzeysianus, fairmairei, cenisius, heteromorphus) in Western Alps of Piedmont. Observations about taxonomy, distribution and eco- logy of these species are presented.
Smithsonian Miscellaneous Collections
SMITHSONIAN MISCELLANEOUS COLLECTIONS. 140 LIST COLEOPTERA NORTH AMERICA. PREPARED FOR THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION. BY JOHN L. LECONTE, M.D. PART I. WASHINGTON: SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION: MARCH, 18G3.—APRIL, 1866. : — ADVERTISEMENT. A catalogue of the described Coleoptera of the United States, prepared by Dr. F. E. Melsheimer, and revised by Prof. Halde- man and Dr. LeConte, was published by the Smithsonian Insti- tution in 1853. This work furnished a reference to all the species described at the time, and known to the author or editors, but did not profess to indicate what were synonymes and what actual species. Dr. LeConte has since had in view a new and improved cata- logue, and by his own researches, and by reference to those of others, has endeavored to ascertain the proper synonymy of the North American Coleoptera, adding the new species described since the date of the Melsheimer Catalogue. The portion of the New List, now published, includes all the families treated of in Part I of the Classification of the Coleop- tera of North America, by Dr. LeConte, who will complete that work, with its companions, the "List," and the "Descriptions of New Species of North American Coleoptera," at the earliest practicable moment. Pages 1 published in March, 1863 50 10 in —49 were ; pp. April, 1866. JOSEPH HENRY, Secretary S. I. Smithsonian Institution, Washington, April, 1866. PHILADELPHIA COLLINS, PRINTEE. NOTICE. The present catalogue was commenced in 1861, and the portion now issued was, in great part, printed as early as June, 1862. The official duties of the author have since left him but little time for scientific research ; but believing that the catalogue, even in its present incomplete condition, will be of service to students, he has considered it proper not to retard its appearance any longer.
