  • Combining Multiple Statistical Methods to Evaluate the Performance of Process-Based Vegetation Models Across Three Forest Stands

In this contribution the performance of two global dynamic vegetation models, i.e. CARAIB and ISBACC, and one stand-scale forest model, i.e. 4C, was compared to long-term observed net ecosystem carbon exchange (NEE) time series from eddy covariance monitoring stations at three old-grown European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) forest stands. Residual analysis, wavelet analysis and singular spectrum analysis were used beside conventional scalar statistical measures to assess model performance with the aim of defining future targets for model improvement. We found that the most important errors for all three models occurred at the edges of the observed NEE distribution and the model errors were correlated with environmental variables on a daily scale.

  • Ecology and Condition of the Ground Beetle Scaphinotus Angusticollis
Ecology and Condition of the Ground Beetle Scaphinotus angusticollis and Distribution of its Prey in Pacific Northwest Riparian Forests by Susanne L. Lavallee B.Sc (University of British Columbia), 1994 M.Sc (University of British Columbia, Zoology), 1999 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY In THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Forestry) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA September 2006 © Susanne L. Lavallee, 2006 Abstract I studied the population ecology of the flightless, forest-dwelling carabid beetle Scaphinotus angusticollis Fischer Von Waldheim (O. Coleoptera F. Carabidae) and several aspects of its body condition for their associations with forest harvesting. Comparison of population estimates revealed that catch-per-unit-effort estimates were not significantly different from more detailed analyses. In two years of trapping, S. angusticollis population densities were found to be significantly lower in clearcuts, as compared to 30 m riparian reserves and uncut forest, suggesting that riparian buffers provide adequate habitat to maintain populations of this terrestrial insect. Movement of S. angusticollis differed in the three habitats studied between years and treatments, with the greatest movement occurring in 30 m buffers in one year and in control sites the next. Clearcuts had the lowest amount of movement in both years. One of the known prey species for S. angusticollis, snails < 2 cm in diameter, were more abundant in clearcut habitat, with Ancotrema hybridum the most abundant species. Canonical correspondence analysis suggests that only A. hybridum were positively correlated with plant cover, and that other species abundances may rely on coarse, downed wood as cover.

Pitfall traps were placed in eleven plots in seven forest communities in Mt Učka and exposed during 2008. Thirty-five carabid species were recorded, eight of which are endemic. The oogeographic positions of species were in accordance with the geographical location of Mt Učka, which is located on the border line of two zoogeographical regions, the Mediterranean and the Euro-Sibirean-North American region with Alpine elements. One quarter of the recorded species are present in the Croatian Red list of ground beetles. One very important finding was that ofCarabus variolosus nodulosus Creutzer 1799 which is given in the Croatian Red list with the status of vulnerable. It is also listed in Appendix II and IV of the Convention on the conservation of European wildlife and natural habitats (Council Directive 92/43/EEC).

An investigation of carabid beetle communities of a managed spruce for- est in eastern Alps (Cadore, Veneto region, Italy) was carried out. Samples were collected by pitfall traps from May to September (2013). We positioned the pitfall traps across different sample units (i.e. forest stands), at an elevation between 800 and 1500 m a.s.l. We sampled 22 species of Carabidae and 7,420 individuals. We investigated the phenology appearance of adult Carabidae to understand the temporal variation in species richness, diversity, and community composition. The study of the variation of species composition along time and the ecological structure of carabids assemblages during sample sessions allow to understand temporal dynamics of each structural parameters of communities and to analyse in detail how the ground beetle communities arrange across time.
