The text of this edition of Volume III is based on that of Friedrich Blass, Isocratis Orationes, Leipzig, II, Teubner, last impression, Vol. I, 1913 ; Vol. 1937. Not only have the critical notes in the Introduction to the Teubner Text of Isocrates as published by Blass been consulted, but also the detailed Critical Apparatus of E. Drerup in his Isocratis Opera Omnia, Vol. I, Leipzig, 1906. Drerup's exhaustive Apparatus available in his edition, which contains all the dis- courses in this Vol. Ill of Isocrates except Oration XIV and the Letters, makes unnecessary in this volume the citation of numerous textual variants which would be of interest only to the specialist. Critical notes with the more important readings are likewise to be found in the Bude edition of Isocrates with translation into French, by G. Mathieu and E. Bremond, Paris (Vol. I, 1928 ; Vol. II, 1938). There is also an edition in the Dutch language of the Trapez- iticus by J. C. Bongenaar, Utrecht, 1933. The Greek text of Isocrates is fortunately so good that extensive emendation has not been necessary in PREFACE the past. In this volume important departures from the text are noted in the footnotes. Changes in the accentuation and punctuation as found in the Teubner text edited by Blass are numerous. For a general account of Manuscripts, Editions, Translations, etc., of Isocrates' works the reader is referred to Norlin's General Introduction in Volume I of the Loeb Library Isocrates, pages xlvi-li. HI INTRODUCTION The discourse entitled Evagoras is the third of the " Cyprian " orations. The first of these, To Nicocles," is addressed to the son of Evagoras, king of Cyprus, who succeeded his father on the throne, and gives the young ruler advice on how a king should conduct himself toward his subjects. The second, Nicocles or The Cyprians? discusses the duties of a king's subjects. The third, Evagoras, is an encomium (rhetorical eulogy) and was composed for a festival held by Nicocles in memory of his father Evagoras, king of the Cyprian kingdom of Salamis. The main facts of the life of Evagoras, his accession to the monarchy and his deeds as ruler, are narrated in Isocrates' discourse although, in accordance with the rhetorical rules of this form of composition, they are embellished by the author. Evagoras gained the throne not later than 4-11 b.c, and died in 374 b.c. Aristotle in the Politics (1311 b) states that Evagoras was murdered, but Isocrates is silent with respect to the manner of the death of his hero. Isocrates him- self, at the time of writing the discourse, was advanced in years. d The Evagoras, like the Encomium of Helen and the Busiris, belongs to the epideictic or display group of Isocratean compositions and in its style shows the influence of the rhetorician Gorgias," but it is unlike these discourses on mythical personages in that it is a sincere panegyric of the murdered king whom Isocrates personally knew and admired. There is, however, much exaggeration in the delineation of the character of the hero. This embellishment was always present in eulogies and was an inevitable characteristic of the rhetorical funeral oration as it was developed by the Sophists. Solon is cited and/or quoted thirty-four times in Plato’s dialogues, and alluded to many more times. My study shows that these references and allusions have deeper meaning when contextualized within the reception of Solon in the classical period. For Plato, Solon is a rhetorically powerful figure in advancing the relatively new practice of philosophy in Athens. While Solon himself did not adequately establish justice in the city, his legacy provided a model upon which Platonic philosophy could improve. Chapter One surveys the passing references to Solon in the dialogues as an introduction to my chapters on the dialogues in which Solon is a very prominent figure, Timaeus- Critias, Republic, and Laws. Chapter Two examines Critias’ use of his ancestor Solon to establish his own philosophic credentials. Chapter Three suggests that Socrates re- appropriates the aims and themes of Solon’s political poetry for Socratic philosophy. Chapter Four suggests that Solon provides a legislative model which Plato reconstructs in the Laws for the philosopher to supplant the role of legislator in Greek thought.

Murray Schafer at the end of the 1960s, refers to the part of the acoustic environment that is per- ceivable by humans. This study attempts to reconstruct roughly the Eleusinian ‘soundscape’ (the words and the sounds made and heard, and those others who remained unheard) as participants in the Great Mysteries of the two Goddesses may have perceived it in the Classical and post-Classical periods. Unlike other mystery cults (e.g. the Cult of Cybele and Attis) whose soundscapes have been meticulously investigated, the soundscape of Eleusis has received relatively little attention, since the visual aspect of the Megala Mysteria of Demeter and Kore has for decades monopolised the scholarly attention. This study aims at putting things right on this front, and simultaneously look closely at the relational dynamic of the acoustic segment of Eleusis as it can be surmised from the work of well-known orators and philosophers of the first and second centuries ce. Introduction and General Backgrounds hantastes is one of the most mysterious books George MacDonald wrote andP one of the least understood books in the English tradition. Since its publication in 1858, reviewers, readers and researchers have experienced great difficulties understanding the meaning of this complex work.The perceived impediments have been so great that some scholars remain unsure whether Phantastes contains a coherent plot or structure (Reis 87, 89, 93-94; Robb 85, 97; etc.). Other critics appear adamant that it contains neither (Wolff 50; Manlove, Modern 55, 71, 77, 79; England 65, 93, 122). Even those scholars who sense a structure or perceive a plot differ not only regarding the types of structure(s) and/or plot(s) they acknowledge (Docherty 17-22; McGillis “Community” 51-63; Gunther “First Two” 32-42), but in deciding into what, if any, genres or traditions Phantastes belongs (Prickett, “Bildungsroman” 109-23; Docherty 19, 23, 30, McGillis, “Femininity” 31-45; etc.).

Introduction he purpose of the present article is to outline the relationship between TGreek cinema and themes from Ancient Greek mythology, in a period stretching from 1930 to 2012. This discourse is initiated by examining mov- ies dated before WW II (Prometheus Bound, 1930, Dimitris Meravidis)1 till recent important ones such as Strella. A Woman’s Way (2009, Panos Ch. Koutras).2 Moreover, movies involving ancient drama adaptations are co-ex- amined with the ones referring to ancient mythology in general. This is due to a particularity of the perception of ancient drama by script writers and di- rectors of Greek cinema: in ancient tragedy and comedy film adaptations,3 ancient drama was typically employed as a source for myth. * I wish to express my gratitude to S.     THE ACHAIANS IN NAUPAKTOS AND KALYDON IN THE FOURTH CENTURY T HE PROBLEMOF ACHAIANCONTROL of Kalydonand Naupaktos as outposts on the north shore of the Gulf of Corinth in the 4th century is a very difficultone, and although the sources for the history of these two cities are substantially different, there is some overlap which compels us to consider them together. The sources are relatively few and scattered,and much scholarshipon the problemconsists of attemptsto fill the blanks.1 Originally Kalydonwas an Aitolian city, and it is describedas such in Homer.2 Xeno- phon says it was formerly Aitolian3 and was in the possession of the Achaians who had given its inhabitants Achaian citizenship; in 389 B.C. it was garrisoned by the Achaians because of the threat of an attack by the Akarnanianswith help from the Athenians and Boiotians.4How or when it became Achaian is left unstated, but they must already have held it for a few years, and the fact that its inhabitantshad been given citizenship suggests that it was the result of a somewhat friendly arrangement.5This granting of Achaian citi- zenship foreshadowsthe ease with which the Achaian League grantedAchaian citizenship I Xenophon, Hellenika iv.6.I and Iv.6.14 and Diodoros, IV.75.2 are the evidence for this first period of Achaian control of these sites. This is particular­ ly true for the classical period wnere the sources are few and scattered. For the archaic period the situation has been somewhat better. One of the first attempts toward the study of Corinthian 1 history was made in 1876 by Ernst Curtius. This brief art­ icle had no pretensions to a thorough investigation of the subject, merely suggesting lines of inquiry and stressing the importance of numisihatic evidence. A contribution of 2 similar score was undertaken by Erich Wilisch in a brief discussion suggesting some of the problems and possible solutions. This was followed by a second brief discussion 3 by the same author.

    ABSTRACT Reading Dreams: An Audience-Critical Approach to the Dreams in the Gospel of Matthew Derek S. Dodson, B.A., M.Div. Mentor: Charles H. Talbert, Ph.D. This dissertation seeks to read the dreams in the Gospel of Matthew (1:18b-25; 2:12, 13-15, 19-21, 22; 27:19) as the authorial audience. This approach requires an understanding of the social and literary character of dreams in the Greco-Roman world. Chapter Two describes the social function of dreams, noting that dreams constituted one form of divination in the ancient world. This religious character of dreams is further described by considering the practice of dreams in ancient magic and Greco-Roman cults as well as the role of dream interpreters. This chapter also includes a sketch of the theories and classification of dreams that developed in the ancient world. Chapters Three and Four demonstrate the literary dimensions of dreams in Greco-Roman literature. I refer to this literary character of dreams as the “script of dreams;” that is, there is a “script” (form) to how one narrates or reports dreams in ancient literature, and at the same time dreams could be adapted, or “scripted,” for a range of literary functions. This exploration of the literary representation of dreams is nuanced by considering the literary form of dreams, dreams in the Greco-Roman rhetorical tradition, the inventiveness of literary dreams, and the literary function of dreams. In light of the social and literary contexts of dreams, the dreams of the Gospel of Matthew are analyzed in Chapter Five.
