Willow Bridge, St Neots - Portrait Bench competition Enter to win a bike worth £200

A new foot and cycle bridge is being built over the River Great Ouse connecting the communities of Eynesbury and Eaton Socon. The bridge was recently named `Willow Bridge` following a competition with local community groups. As part of the Willow Bridge scheme, an artwork project will be included, in the form of a portrait bench.

What is a portrait bench? The portrait bench is a collection of three local, life-size figures, cut from sheet steel and installed next to a simple wooden bench. The steel used will weather naturally over time and requires minimum maintenance.

The bench is part of a national art initiative from Portrait bench in Afan Valley, Wales (Photo by Chandra Prasad/Sustrans) the charity Sustrans – similar benches are being built across the UK to form a common link for all Connect2 projects. It is being paid for by the Big Lottery Fund.

Let us know who you would like to see on your portrait bench and you could win a brand new bike worth £200! We would like to hear your suggestions for people to feature on the portrait bench.

You can either: x Post us your suggestions and contact details free of charge to: Willow Bridge Team, Cambridgeshire County Council, CCC1211 Castle Court, Castle Hill, FREEPOST CB176, CB3 0AP x Email us at [email protected] x Log on to www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/transport/stneotsbridge

You can suggest a maximum of three characters or themes. All entries must be received by Monday 30 May.

Example characters/themes x The Eynesbury Giant: born in 1795, James Toller grew to 8’6” feet tall. He was buried in St Mary’s church for fear of 'body snatchers'. x St Neot - The Patron Saint of Fish: St Neots got its name from the saint, who was known for his good work caring for the poor. A large mosaic of him is in the market place. x Theme characters such as market traders, brewers or cyclists. x Ernulf the Hermit: a Saxon settler who lived in the area. Eynesbury is named after him. Page 10 Rules for portrait bench characters/themes x can be a real person, fictional character or part of a theme, x must not be a living person, x does not need to be famous, x must have an association with St Neots, Eaton Socon or Eynesbury, x must not be offensive in any way, x cannot advertise any business.

What happens next? Entries will be considered by the Willow Bridge Steering Group. The final decision will be signed off by senior County Councillors. The portrait bench will be unveiled at the opening of the bridge this autumn.

Entry deadline is Monday 30 May 2011 Full terms and conditions are available online. Bike prize kindly donated by Wheeler’s, 34 St Mary’s Street, Eynesbury.

Page 17 Wheelie Bin Fires

Wheelie bin and rubbish fires are a huge drain on Fire Service resources and fire fighters time could be better spent else where. With the warmer weather and holiday seasons fast approaching, the occurrence of these types of fires tends to increase. In addition to the obvious financial costs involved attending rubbish fires potentially diverts fire crews and their equipment away from doing their most important job which is protecting the safety of the public we serve. A wheelie bin can be seen as an easy way to start a fire in someone else’s home. These bins can be easily manoeuvred and be placed close to front and back doors, which are relied upon as escape routes when a fire occurs. The impact can be extremely significant. When you consider the likely contents of these bins you can appreciate how easily the fire could take hold and spread. The vast majority of bin fires are started deliberately. Someone may throw a match or lighted material in the bin and although nothing may happen immediately several minutes later a serious fire can develop endangering lives and property.

Wheelie Bin Tips

*Never store bins close to doors, windows or service intakes - any fire in the bin could easily spread to your property. *Wheelie bins should be stored securely behind locked gates. *Bins should only be placed on the highway on collection day and returned to your property as soon as possible after emptying. *If a secure location is not available, the wheelie bin should be locked shut and secured away from any building. *Make sure your home is fitted with working smoke alarms.

If you would like any advice on the above or any other fire safety related issues, please contact St.Neots Fire Station on 01480 474601

Page 19 Barford Road Pocket Park Needs Friends!!

Barford Road Pocket Park is a 45 acre park set on the flood plains of the River Great Ouse in St. Neots. Its patchwork of different habitats including wet grassland meadows and marshland provide an excellent home for many different species of plant, animal and birds. Ranger Matt Hall is currently in the process of setting up a “Friends of” group for the park. He says “Barford Road Pocket Park is currently the only site run by HDC’s Countryside Service without a Friends group. On other sites it has been proven that having a friends group supports the work the rangers do no end. Whether you fancy joining a work party, running an event for children or even applying for funding, your work could be vital to building a better future for your park.” To join the friends of the parks mailing list or for more information please phone 01480 406 795 or email [email protected].
