EASTMAN NOTES JUNE 2004 Draft: Final Date: 6/15/2004 INSIDE
NOTES JUNE 2004 A MAGAZINE FOR ALUMNI OF THE EASTMAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC FROM THE EDITOR The right “stu≠” Dear Eastman Alumni: We like Notes’ new look, and it seems you do too. Response has been unani- mously favorable; perhaps we should consider a Steve Boerner–David Cowles NOTES presidential ticket for 2008. I’d vote for them; these two artists made “Notes Volume 22, Number 2 nouveau” a pleasure, and I’m glad the pleasure was conveyed in the magazine June 2004 itself. I write the stuff, but they (and our photographers) make it look good! We also had a tremendous response to our “Eastman Alumni on CD” feature; Editor see pages 33¬34. And enough of you commented on different editorial aspects of David Raymond Notes (not always favorably) that we have a “Letters to the Editor” section, which Assistant editor may be a first for us. Christina Casey This issue of Notes is admittedly filled with history, but Susan Conkling’s re- Contributing writers minder of the great women who shaped both American music and Eastman, and Martial Bednar Amy Blum Paul Burgett’s reminder of four black composers who Christine Corrado played an important part in Eastman history, are stories Contributing photographers worth telling. As is the story of the success of Howard Kurt Brownell Hanson’s Merry Mount at the Met in 1934—a remarkable Gelfand-Piper Photography event, when you think about it. I should add a special Bob Klein Photography word of thanks here to David Peter Coppen, the Sibley Carlos Ortiz Don Ver Ploeg/VP Communications Library Archivist, who is always helpful with providing Amy Vetter historical photographs and other materials for Notes, but Photography coordinator outdid himself for these three articles. -

Eastman Notes June 2004
NOTES DECEMBER 2004 A MAGAZINE FOR ALUMNI OF THE EASTMAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC FROM THE EDITOR Worth a thousand words Dear Eastman Alumni: As far as I know, George Eastman’s portrait has always hung in the School’s Main Hall. I wonder how many of the students who have passed by it over the NOTES years had more than a vague idea who Eastman was. They had ample opportunity Volume 23, Number 1 to fi nd out this year: the City of Rochester celebrated Eastman’s 150th birthday, December 2004 and the school bearing his name enthusiastically joined in. Eastman’s contributions are thrice-told tales around here, but they remain Editor a remarkable American story. Endowing a great American music school in an David Raymond upstate New York manufacturing city was an odd about-face for a turn-of-the- Assistant editor century captain of industry; but we can be glad a self-described “musical moron” Christina Casey decided to use his money and moral support to back his audacious proposal. Contributing writers Rochester’s community life, and America’s musical life, have never been the Martial Bednar Amy Blum same since 1921. Fruchtman August 2016 Dissertation Committee: Dr. Byron Adams, Chairperson Dr. Walter Aaron Clark Dr. Michael Alexander Dr. Daniel Goldmark Copyright by Aaron J. Fruchtman 2016 The Dissertation of Aaron J. Fruchtman is approved: ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ Committee Chairperson University of California, Riverside Acknowledgements Despite locking myself away from the world to write this dissertation, I was supported by many individuals and institutions. I am grateful to my committee chair, Dr. Byron Adams, who always believed in my scholarly vision and made me want to become a musicologist. I am also grateful to my committee members: Profs. Walter Clark, Michael Alexander, and Daniel Goldmark. Each of you has made yourselves available to me over this journey and I am profoundly thankful for your words of wisdom. Two archivists deserve special praise: I would like to thank James D’Arc at Brigham Young University who shares my passion for the music of Max Steiner and made my visit to Provo most productive. At the University of Southern California, Edward Comstock constantly fielded my questions and requests and had time for wonderful conversations about our favorite Golden Age film composers. Likewise, thank you to Sandra Garcia-Myers at USC’s Cinematic Archive and Brett Service at USC’s Warner Bros. Archives for locating the numerous items I requested. Additionally, I would like to thank the staff of the Margaret Herrick Library, Syracuse University Libraries, American Heritage Center at the University of Wyoming, and University of California, Los Angeles Performing Arts Special Collections.
