Julio José Iglesias de la Cueva, better known Julio Iglesias is a Madrid born Spanish singer with over 77 albums to his credit and 300 million records sold in 14 languages across the globe. Born on September 23, 1943, Sony Music Entertainment confirms that he is one of the top 10 best selling artists in history. Originally, Julio rose to prominence in the 1970s and 1980s for his performances of romantic ballads but his success he continues to enjoy success in a number of new musical endeavors. In the 1960s, Julio studied law in Madrid and was a goalkeeper for one of Real Madrid’s football team. He was in a car accident in September 22, 1963 and suffered paraparexia - compression of the spinal cord - that left him very ill for three years and he has required physical therapy as late as October 2010. However, he did recover his health and travelled to the UK to study English, first as Ramsgate and then at Bell Educational Trust Language School in Cambridge. In 1971, he married Filipino journalist Isabel Preysler and together they had three children during their 8-year marriage: Chabeli Iglesias, Julio Iglesias, JR. and Enrique Iglesias. The marriage was annulled in 1979. On August 24, 2010, after a twenty year relationship, Julio Iglesias and Mirand Rignsburger were married in a religious ceremony in the Parish of the Virgen del Carmen of Marbella. The couple has three sons (Miguel born September 7, 1997), Rodrigo (born April 3, 1999), Guillermo (born May 5, 2007) and twin daughters (Victoria and Cristina born May 1, 2001). In 1968, Iglesias won the songwriter’s Benidorm International Song Festival in Spain with the song “La vida sigue igual” (Life continues just the same), which was used in the autobiographical film of the same title. In 1970, he represented Spain in the 1970 Eurovision Song Contest, earning fourth place with the song “Gwendolyne.” Having signed with Discos Columbia - the Spanish branch of Columbia Records - he had a number one hit across Europe with “Un Canto A Galicia,” selling 1 million copies on Germany. In 1975, he found success in the Italian market with the Italian recording “Se mi lasci non vale” (If you leave me, it can’t be), amongst many other notable albums including 1974’s A Flor de Piel, 1975’s El Amor and 1978 Soy. Following the annulment of his first marriage to Preysler in 1979, Iglesias moved to Miami Florida, USA and signed a deal with CBS International. He began singing in different languages including English, French, Portuguese, and German, releasing the album “De Niña a Mujer” in 1981 that contained his first English -language hit: A Spanish cover of “Begin the Beguine,” a UK number 1 hit. He also released a collection entitled “Julio” in 1983 and another album, “1100 Bel Air Place” in 1984. This 1984 album was his break in to the English speaking entertainment industry, selling four million copies in the USA with the first single “To all the girls I’ve loved before,” a duet with Willie Nelson peaking at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Kidnapped in 1985 and found alive two weeks later prompting Julio to move his children to Miami with him. That same year, he recorded duets with Diana Ross and Willie Nelson. In 1998, he won a Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album for his album “Un Hombre Solo”. His 1988 album “Non Stop” included a duet with Stevie Wonder on “My Love.” He returned to his original Spanish melody in 1996’s “Tango,” nominated for Best Latin Pop Album at the 1998 Grammy Awards. Julio Iglesias went on to win the World Music Award for “Tango” in Monaco later that year and performed two "Tangos" to the delight of the audience. Iglesias returned to the headlines in October 2003, when he went to Argentina and kissed show host Susana Giménez three times during a live telecast of her show. In 2003, he released his album “Divorcio” (Divorce). In its first day of sales the album sold a record 350,000 albums in Spain, and reached the number 1 spot on the charts in Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, and Russia. In 2003 and 2004, he was the feature attraction of a ten-month world tour from Europe and Asia to North America, South America and Africa with most of the shows selling out within days of tickets going on sale.
