Itis one of seven associations of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, and Recrea- tion. PURPOSE The purpose of the-National Association for Girls and Women in Spott is to foster the development of sports programs for the enrichment of the life of theparticipant. BELIEFS The National Association for Girls am Women in Sport believes that: Sports are an integral part of the culture in whichwe. live. Sports programs are a part of the total educational experience of the participant when conducted in educational institutions. Opportunities for instruction and participation in sports appropriateto her skill level should be included in the experience ofevery girl. Sports skills and sports participation are valuable social and recreationaltools which may be used to enrich the lives ofwomen in our society. Competition and cooperation may be demonstrated in all sportsprograms, al- though the type and intensity of the compeiition and cooperation willvary with the degree or level of skill of the participants. An understanding of the relationship between competition and cooperationand the utilization of both within the aux.pied framework ofour society is one of the desirable outcomes of sports participation. rhysical activity is important in the maintenance of the general health of the participant. Participation in soorts contributes to the development of self-confideneeand to the establishment of desirable interpersonal relationships. FUNCTIONS The National Association for Girls and Women in Sportpromotes desirable sports programs through: I. Formulating and publicizing guiding principles and standards for the adminis- trator, leader, official, and player. /. Publishing and ,nterpreting rules governing sports for girls andwomen. 3. Providinp, the means for training, evaluating, and ratiag officials, 4. Disseminating information on the conduct of uirls and women'ssports. 5. Stimulating, evaluating, and disseminating research in the field of girlsand women's sports. 6. CoOperating with allied groups interested in girls and women'ssports in order to formulate policies and rules that affect the conduct of women's sports. 7. Providing opportunities for the development of leadershipamong girls and wlmen for the conduct of their sports programs. 5 8 STANDARDS IN SPORTS FOR GIRLS AND WOMEN Standards in sports activities for girls and women should be based upon the following: I. Sports activities fm girls and women should be taught, coached, and officiated by qualified women whenever and wherever possible. 2. While this is true, it originated as a far more violent sport with even harder obstacles. The sport’s origins come from northern Europe, specifically the British Isles. Water polo originated as a type of rugby that was played under the water with violence, injuries, and near-drownings as part of the game. The Scots then developed more civilized rules and developed the concept of passing the ball above water while submerging the ball was considered illegal. The sport grew in popularity and spread all across Europe. The Hungarians then took up the sport and developed much of it to the way we play today. They developed the dry pass, meaning that the ball was to never touch the water; this revolutionized the sport and allowed the Hungarians to establish a water polo dynasty. ater polo is one of the oldest Olympic sports.     Title: Drowning and Therapeutic Hypothermia: Dead Man Walking Author(s): Angela Kavenaugh, D.O., Jamie Cohen, D.O., Jennifer Davis MD FAAP, Department of PICU Affiliation(s): Chris Evert Children’s Hospital, Broward Health Medical Center ABSTRACT BODY: Background: Drowning is the second leading cause of death in children and is associated with severe morbidity and mortality, most often due to hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. Those that survive are often left with debilitating neurological deficits. Therapeutic Hypothermia after resuscitation from ventricular fibrillation or pulseless ventricular tachycardia induced cardiac arrest is the standard of care in adults and has also been proven to have beneficial effects that persist into early childhood when utilized in neonatal birth asphyxia, but has yet to be accepted into practice for pediatrics. Objective: To present supportive evidence that Therapeutic Hypothermia improves mortality and morbidity specifically for pediatric post drowning patients. Case Report: A five year old male presented to the Emergency Department after pool submersion of unknown duration. He was found to have asphyxial cardiac arrest and received bystander CPR, which was continued by EMS for a total of 10 minutes, including 2 doses of epinephrine. CPR continued into the emergency department. Upon presentation to the ED, he was found to have fixed and dilated pupils, unresponsiveness, with a GCS of 3. Upon initial pulse check was found to have return of spontaneous circulation, with sinus tachycardia. His blood gas revealed 6.86/45/477/8/-25. He was intubated, given 2 normal saline boluses and 2 mEq/kg of Sodium Bicarbonate. The initial head CT was normal.

    Aileen Riggin Soule: A Wonderful Life In her own words The youngest U.S. Olympic champion, the tiniest anywhere Olympic champion and the first women's Olympic springboard diving champion was Aileen Riggin. All these honors were won in the 1920 Olympics by Miss Riggin when she had just passed her 14th birthday. If no woman started earlier as an amateur champion, certainly no woman pro stayed on the top longer. Aileen Riggin never waited for opportunities to come her way. In 1924 at Paris, she became the only girl in Olympic history to win medals in both diving and swimming in the same Olympic Games (silver in 3 meter springboard and bronze in 100 meter backstroke). She turned pro in 1926, played the Hippodrome and toured with Gertrude Ederle’s Act for 6 months after her famous Channel swim. She made appearances at new pool openings and helped launch “learn to swim programs” around the world. She gave diving exhibitions, taught swimming, ledtured and wrote articles on fashion, sports, fitness and health for the New York Post and many of the leading magazines of her day. She also danced in the movie "Roman Scandals" starring Eddie Cantor and skated in Sonja Henie's film "One in a Million." She helped organize and coach Billy Rose's first Aquacade in which she also starred, at the 1937 Cleveland Exposition. She was truly a girl who did it all. When in 1996, while attending the Olympic Games in Atlanta as America’s oldest Olympic Gold medalist, she was asked if she still had any goals left in life, she said: "Yes.

While this call to action has strongly influenced the interdisciplinary impulse of performance studies and prompted important cross- disciplinary investigations between performance genres such as theatre, dance, performance art, political performance, ritual, and play, sport has remained under- theorized in the field. In this project, I begin to fill this gap by approaching the practices, activities, and events of twenty-first century sport through the lens of performance studies.

USAS Code of Regulations & Policies Update: Secretary Longmire briefly discussed the 6 topics that will be considered by the working group. July 2nd is the deadline for NGBs to submit Code revision proposals for consideration by the working group. August 1st all Code and Policy recommendations will be distributed to the NGB Presidents/Chairmen for discussion with their respective Board of Directors. All recommended revisions will be approved at the USAS Board of Trustees meeting in September at the USAS Convention. 3. FINA World Aquatics Day: If an NGB is interested in participating, information should be sent to Laurette for submission to FINA. B. TREASURER’S REPORT: Treasurer Boak shared financial statements and noted that USAS is in a good financial position.
