Dennis Kennedy Founder & CEO, National Diversity Council

Greetings,

It is my privilege to welcome you to the 3rd Annual Philadelphia Diversity & Leadership Conference. This year’s theme is “From Awareness to Action.” Diversity & Inclusion continues to prove to be imperative in today’s global economy. Many organizations understand the value of having a diverse workforce, but more can still be done. The need to bring cultural change into a business model and take the action in creating an environment of “one organization fits all”, calls for collective efforts. The purpose of this one day conference is to give participants an opportunity to share the tools necessary to build a diverse talent pool that can accomplish organizational goals. It is a time to network and take their leadership skills to a higher level. The Philadelphia Diversity & Leadership Conference is a chance to learn what it takes to make it on the road to diversity. Our speakers and various panel sessions will bring their unique knowledge and skills to help promote a culture of inclusion. I want to thank our sponsors who have seen the value in our Philadelphia Diversity & Leadership Conference and continue to provide financial support to keep us going. Please take note of our sponsors and support them when possible. Second, I want to say “Thank You” to our speakers who have made a commitment to be here for this conference. Many have traveled in order to participate and I greatly appreciate their support. Finally, I would like to thank the organizers of the conference for a job well done.

Sincerely,

Dennis Kennedy CEO & Founder National Diversity Council www.diversityfirstjobs.com

Sherri Flaherty VP Human Resource Operations – Cricket Communications A Best Place to work for Hourly Workers

Welcome to our 3rd annual Diversity and Leadership Conference. As an HR professional chairing the Pennsylvania Diversity Council is one of many milestones in my HR career. As I look back over the past 30 years in the human resource field there are a few milestones along that way that confirm that human resources is not only my career, it is who I am. I have had the opportunity while working my way through the HR ranks to complete my Bachelor’s degree from Geneva College as well as my Master’s Degree in Leadership and Liberal Studies from Duquesne University. HR programs such as educational reimbursement offered by my employers have created career changing opportunities and milestones. I have also had the pleasure of working with and coaching good people to become great at what they do including creating their own milestones. Working with the Pennsylvania Diversity Council has provided an opportunity to “give back” and engage in what hopefully will be a milestone event for each of you. We have a diverse group of local leaders who have volunteered their time today to host, lead and participate in the many sessions we have planned. My wish for each of you is that you enjoy your day and create your own milestone through your experience at today’s conference. Again – welcome and thank you for your support and participation in our Diversity and Leadership Conference. Make it a great day on purpose!

Soledad O’Brien Correspondent and Host of CNN

Soledad O’Brien is the anchor for CNN morning show Starting Point with Soledad O’Brien and special correspondent for CNN/U.S. Since joining the network in 2003, O’Brien has reported breaking news from around the globe and has produced award-winning, record-breaking and critically acclaimed documentaries on the most important stories facing the world today. In 2010, she wrote a critically-acclaimed memoir The Next Big Story: My Journey through the Land of Possibilities, which chronicles her biggest reporting moments and how her upbringing and background have influenced these experiences. O’Brien joined CNN as the co-anchor of the network’s flagship morning program, American Morning, and distinguished herself by reporting from the scene on the transformational stories that broke on her watch. For CNN’s Katrina coverage, O’Brien’s reports on the storm’s impact included an in-depth interview with former FEMA chief Michael Brown. In 2011, Soledad won her first Emmy for Crisis in Haiti ( 360) in the category of Outstanding Live Coverage of a Current News Story – Long Form. O’Brien was part of the coverage teams that earned CNN a George Foster Peabody award for its BP oil spill and Katrina coverage and an Alfred I. duPont Award for its coverage of the Southeast Asia tsunami. The National Association of Black Journalists named O’Brien the Journalist of the Year and Edward R Murrow Awards lauded her with the RTDNA/UNITY award for Latino in America in 2010. She received the 2009 Medallion of Excellence for Leadership and Community Service Award from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. In 2008, she was the first recipient of the Soledad O’Brien Freedom’s Voice Award from the Morehouse School of Medicine for being a catalyst for social change and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Goodermote Humanitarian Award for her efforts while reporting on the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina and the tsunami. Her numerous other awards include a Gracie Allen Award in 2007 for her reporting from Cyprus on the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict as well as her reports from the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina. The NAACP honored her with its President’s Award in 2007 for her humanitarian efforts and journalistic excellence. O’Brien came to CNN from NBC News where she anchored the network’s Weekend Today since July 1999. Prior, O’Brien anchored MSNBC’s award-winning technology program The Site. O’Brien joined NBC News in 1991 and was based in New York as a field producer for Nightly News and TODAY. Before her time at NBC, she served three years as a local reporter and bureau chief for the NBC affiliate KRON in San Francisco. She began her career as an associate producer and news writer at the then-NBC affiliate WBZ-TV in Boston. Soledad O’Brien is a graduate of Harvard University and currently lives with her husband and four children in Manhattan.

Lisa Buckingham Executive Vice President, Chief Human Resources Officer, Brand & Enterprise Communications Lincoln Financial Group

Maybe the discipline of a military upbringing created Lisa M. Buckingham’s work ethic and her goal-oriented style, or maybe she was simply born that way. From the earliest days of her career Buckingham says, “My work is always completed before I walk out. Deliver what you say you’re going to deliver and deliver it with as much perfectionism as you can because that’s your thumbprint.” Hers was not a measured path into human resources. Buckingham dreamed of a career in TV newscasting, but a rotational HR college internship changed her trajectory. “I found my place. I have never looked back,” she says. Forging a career, Buckingham says, “It’s about working with great leaders and colleagues. You learn from folks what works for you and what wouldn’t work for you. I developed my style over time. I’ve been blessed to work for great leaders that are still in my network and are still there when I need advice or mentoring.” “My north star has always been doing the right thing and ensuring that all the decisions we make that affect employees are fact-based and focused on getting to the right answer for all those involved,” Buckingham says. At a company the size of Lincoln Financial Group, that is challenging. “I’m very good at what I do in this space,” Buckingham says of human resources. “I like to stay focused in an area where I know we can push the norms of what we do.” She leads a push for measurable results in the HR realm, asking employees to respond anonymously to a series of multiple choice and open verbatim questions. “It’s a good systemic way to touch base with our entire workforce every other year and it creates a business dialog with business leaders. You get unadulterated feedback. We can convince ourselves we’re doing the best things, but if employees don’t feel it’s adding value then it isn’t working. It keeps me pushing and striving to be a bit more innovative,” she says. At any given time, country music may stream from Buckingham’s office. This free-spirited, a-typical human resources executive believes in professionalism, integrity, courage, and being on her game at all times, but she points to Romans 12:2 as a reminder that authenticity is vital. “Don’t let the world around you squeeze you into its own mold,” she says. “Authenticity is really important to me,” she says. “When I meet people I hope they always know where I’m coming from. In the HR role, we can sometimes get bogged down in policies and procedures and government regulations, but I always want to innovate and make things rewarding and a little bit of fun.”
