Embedded Reporters: What Are Americans Getting? For More Information Contact: Tom Rosenstiel, Director, Project for Excellence in Journalism Amy Mitchell, Associate Director Matt Carlson, Wally Dean, Dante Chinni, Atiba Pertilla, Research Nancy Anderson, Tom Avila, Staff Embedded Reporters: What Are Americans Getting? Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has suggested we are getting only “slices” of the war. Other observers have likened the media coverage to seeing the battlefield through “a soda straw.” The battle for Iraq is war as we’ve never it seen before. It is the first full-scale American military engagement in the age of the Internet, multiple cable channels and a mixed media culture that has stretched the definition of journalism. The most noted characteristic of the media coverage so far, however, is the new system of “embedding” some 600 journalists with American and British troops. What are Americans getting on television from this “embedded” reporting? How close to the action are the “embeds” getting? Who are they talking to? What are they talking about? To provide some framework for the discussion, the Project for Excellence in Journalism conducted a content analysis of the embedded reports on television during three of the first six days of the war. The Project is affiliated with Columbia University and funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts. The embedded coverage, the research found, is largely anecdotal. It’s both exciting and dull, combat focused, and mostly live and unedited. Much of it lacks context but it is usually rich in detail. It has all the virtues and vices of reporting only what you can see.

IN TWITTER AND WIKIPEDIA WE TRUST?: ONLINE INFORMATION AND THE CRISIS OF CREDIBILITY by KRISTEN M. HEFLIN (Under the Direction of James F. Hamilton) ABSTRACT Journalism is currently experiencing a severe crisis of credibility, and the Internet is often celebrated as a response to this crisis. Drawing from a historical-cultural analysis, this dissertation begins by historicizing the crisis of credibility in journalism and the development of the Internet as a decentralized network to provide the context necessary to better understand the expectations, practices and issues related to online information and the crisis of credibility. It then discusses the Internet‘s inability to serve as the solution to this crisis as being rooted in the contradiction between deliberation and verification, two values at the heart of journalistic practice, liberal democratic media theory and ultimately Western epistemology. Through analyses of popular and trade press evaluations of Wikipedia and Twitter this dissertation discusses the irreconcilable nature of these values and the ways journalists try, unsuccessfully, to reconcile these two values. Despite its promise, the Internet is not the solution to this crisis of credibility because online sources (such as Wikipedia) and non-professional contributions (such as those on Twitter) have been largely accommodated within traditional journalistic routines, professional norms and reigning conceptions of producing authoritative knowledge. Thus, journalists‘ use of Wikipedia and Twitter perpetuate the contradictions at the heart of journalism practice and traditional Western epistemology, which are the same instabilities that produce the present crisis in credibility. As such, this dissertation reveals that the crisis of credibility is not a technological one, but a cultural one about the inadequacy of liberal democratic media theory.

  • Five Counties. Five Debates. No Excuses
5 COUNTIES. 5 DEBATES. NO EXCUSES. Rep. Matt Cartwright Cartwright for Congress 216 Wyoming Ave Scranton, PA 18503 Dear Representative Cartwright, Representative Democracy, the great American experiment, has only succeeded because of our shared commitment to an informed citizenry and open debate. Debate and freedom of expression are basic human rights, and the foundation to any democratic government. Representative Democracy needs more debate – not less. Voters should hear every argument and then make up their own minds what they thinK is right and how they want to be governed. I fear our representatives have become lazy in their responsibility to the people to have open discussions about the state of our country, especially at a time of crisis where our health is threatened and our safety is at risk. Which is why I find it vital that you and I engage in five debates so that the people of the 8th District of Pennsylvania will have substantive information in which to make an informed decision this fall. Each county in our district is important, with different concerns and opportunities. Many counties have felt neglected during your many terms in office. In light of this, I hope you will agree that we owe it to the residents of each of our five counties to have a debate take place in each county. Therefore, I propose we have at least one debate hosted in each of Wayne County, PiKe County, LacKawanna County, Luzerne County, and Monroe County. I have asKed my campaign to worK with yours to set up debates for this election cycle.
