69 Changing Icons: The Symbols of New York City in Film TERRI MEYER BOAKE University of Waterloo These architectural symbols also begin to differ- entiate “new” cities, whose prominent building are entirely contemporary, from “old” cities, whose icons begin to show, even by silhouette, the evo- lution of the architectural style that has come to represent the culture or zeitgeist of the place. The icons of Dubai all reside in the present. The collec- tion of symbols that represents London is capable of placing it in the past through the use of Big Ben or St. Paul’s, or in the present, via the London Eye. Likewise for Paris, the past and present are contrasted through the Eiffel Tower and the Lou- vre Pyramid. Strikingly absent from the New York suite, are the paired rectangular images of the Twin Towers. Without an alternate “modern” icon, the city has lately come to be characterized by notable buildings of the past – The Empire State 1 Fig. 1. Silhouettes of well known City Icons. Mount Holyoke College May 2013 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS “In anthropology, you can study anything.” This is what happens when you tell that to an impressionable undergrad. “No, Really: What is Cosplay?” would not have been possible without the individuals of the cosplay community, who gave their time, hotel room space, and unforgettable voices to this project: Tina Lam, Mario Bueno, Rob Simmons, Margaret Huey, Chris Torrey, Chris Troy, Calico Singer, Maxiom Pie, Cassi Mayersohn, Renee Gloger, Tiffany Chang, as well as the countless other cosplayers at AnimeNEXT, Anime Expo, and Otakon during the summer of 2012. A heap of gratitude also goes to Amanda Gonzalez, William Gonzalez, Kimberly Lee, Patrick Belardo, Elizabeth Newswanger, and Clara Bertagnolli, for their enthusiasm for this project—as well as their gasoline. And to my parents, Beth Gersh-Nesic and Dusan Nesic, who probably didn’t envision this eight years ago, letting me trundle off to my first animé convention in a homemade ninja getup and a face full of Watercolor marker. • Biblical Studies, Science Fiction, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe Aaron Ricker [email protected]
Journal for Interdisciplinary Biblical Studies ISSN 2633-0695 44 Vol 3.1 (Summer 2021) Call it Science: Biblical Studies, Science Fiction, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe Aaron Ricker [email protected] ABSTRACT In the virtual world elaborated in Marvel’s movies (the “Marvel Cinematic Universe” or MCU), “science” is creatively, strategically confused with “magic” and/or “religion.” Key supernatural/magical elements of the franchise’s comic-book source material are “retconned” (retroactively granted new narrative coherence and continuity) as advanced scientific marvels. I argue in the first section that a biblical studies perspective can shed valuable light on this contemporary sci-fi phenomenon, by highlighting the ideologically interested and culturally contingent character of “religious” phenomena like canons and marvels. The perspective thus provided can help elucidate the contexts and consequences of the MCU decision to retcon magical and religious cultural materials as scientific wonders. In the second section, I argue further that such reflection on science fiction and the MCU offers valuable perspective to biblical studies in return by opening new research avenues into the human and historical meaning of certain biblical traditions, in this case by recalling the sense of technology shock that must have sometimes accompanied ancient developments like the widespread use of war horses or the mass production of books—world-changing developments that modern biblical critics are not culturally primed to perceive and investigate as technological marvels. KEYWORDS Science; Science Fiction; Apocalyptic; Popular Culture; Miracles; Wonder; Marvel Cinematic Universe Introduction: Science Fiction, Biblical Studies, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe Marvel Studios is a popular-culture superpower.

From Serials to Blockbusters: Media Industry Approaches to Comic-to-Live-Action Adaptations and Race by Kathryn M. Frank A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Communication) in the University of Michigan 2015 Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Amanda D. Lotz, Chair Professor Susan J. Douglas Professor Lisa A. Nakamura Associate Professor Aswin Punathambekar © Kathryn M. Frank 2015 “I don't remember when exactly I read my first comic book, but I do remember exactly how liberated and subversive I felt as a result.” ― Edward W. Said, Palestine For Mom and Dad, who taught me to be my own hero ii Acknowledgements There are so many people without whom this project would never have been possible. First and foremost, my parents, Paul and MaryAnn Frank, who never blinked when I told them I wanted to move half way across the country to read comic books for a living. Their unending support has taken many forms, from late-night pep talks and airport pick-ups to rides to Comic-Con at 3 am and listening to a comics nerd blather on for hours about why Man of Steel was so terrible. I could never hope to repay the patience, love, and trust they have given me throughout the years, but hopefully fewer midnight conversations about my dissertation will be a good start. Amanda Lotz has shown unwavering interest and support for me and for my work since before we were formally advisor and advisee, and her insight, feedback, and attention to detail kept me invested in my own work, even in times when my resolve to continue writing was flagging.

(Jones 94).
