69 Changing Icons: The Symbols of New York City in Film TERRI MEYER BOAKE University of Waterloo These architectural symbols also begin to differ- entiate “new” cities, whose prominent building are entirely contemporary, from “old” cities, whose icons begin to show, even by silhouette, the evo- lution of the architectural style that has come to represent the culture or zeitgeist of the place. The icons of Dubai all reside in the present. The collec- tion of symbols that represents London is capable of placing it in the past through the use of Big Ben or St. Paul’s, or in the present, via the London Eye. Likewise for Paris, the past and present are contrasted through the Eiffel Tower and the Lou- vre Pyramid. Strikingly absent from the New York suite, are the paired rectangular images of the Twin Towers. • Avengers Dissemble! Transmedia Superhero Franchises and Cultic Management
Taylor 1 Avengers dissemble! Transmedia superhero franchises and cultic management Aaron Taylor, University of Lethbridge Abstract Through a case study of The Avengers (2012) and other recently adapted Marvel Entertainment properties, it will be demonstrated that the reimagined, rebooted and serialized intermedial text is fundamentally fan oriented: a deliberately structured and marketed invitation to certain niche audiences to engage in comparative activities. That is, its preferred spectators are often those opinionated and outspoken fan cultures whose familiarity with the texts is addressed and whose influence within a more dispersed film- going community is acknowledged, courted and potentially colonized. These superhero franchises – neither remakes nor adaptations in the familiar sense – are also paradigmatic byproducts of an adaptive management system that is possible through the appropriation of the economics of continuity and the co-option of online cultic networking. In short, blockbuster intermediality is not only indicative of the economics of post-literary adaptation, but it also exemplifies a corporate strategy that aims for the strategic co- option of potentially unruly niche audiences. Keywords Marvel Comics superheroes post-cinematic adaptations Taylor 2 fandom transmedia cult cinema It is possible to identify a number of recent corporate trends that represent a paradigmatic shift in Hollywood’s attitudes towards and manufacturing of big budget adaptations. These contemporary blockbusters exemplify the new industrial logic of transmedia franchises – serially produced films with a shared diegetic universe that can extend within and beyond the cinematic medium into correlated media texts. Consequently, the narrative comprehension of single entries within such franchises requires an increasing degree of media literacy or at least a residual awareness of the intended interrelations between correlated media products.

Elvis Gospel Fan Club Quarterly Newsletter 2019-2 Madeleine Wilson - Fan Club President and Newsletter Editor J Peter Wilson – Fan Club Vice President Dr. Tony Stone - Chaplain Shalom, 87 St John’s Avenue, Bridlington, East Yorkshire, YO16 4NJ Tel: 01262 416266 Website: www.elvisgospel.com. Email: [email protected] Editorial Dear Gospel Fan, It is always a pleasure to hear of new ways in which Elvis is still having a positive effect on humanity. I recently listened to a wonderful BBC Radio 4 programme “Elvis - A Tribute in Dance - The Art of Living” Claire Cunningham is a Scottish choreographer and contemporary dancer who performs with crutches. The programme joined her in the studio during the research period for a new work, “Thank You Very Much”, which draws on Claire’s current fascination with Elvis Tribute Artists. Claire is intrigued by the difference between impersonation and tribute, what it means to train to become someone else - or an ideal of someone else - and relating this to the lived experience of disability. She asks, “Is this also a life of being pressured to be someone you are not?” The programme is a fun, exuberant and occasionally poignant mix of dance, music, singing, text and, of course, fabulous costumes. Through one-on-one masterclasses with Elvis Tribute Artists, practising harmonies, and offering up their own personal experiences of physiotherapy and speech therapy, the group not only learn to sing and dance like Elvis, but also explore how paying tribute involves bringing something of themselves into the act. These tasks become part of improvisations in the studio, from which the final show was devised.

Settle in for a summer of ‘reboots’ at the box office By BILL GOODYKOONTZ Gannett Chief Film Critic Published: Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at 1:37 p.m. Among the many big-budget blockbusters on tap for this summer is “The Amazing Spider-Man,” which in movie jargon is undergoing what is referred to as a “reboot.” Reboot: A different take on a well-known idea. That’s not surprising. Superheroes are a summer staple, and we’ve already seen a gaggle of them gathered in “The Avengers” so far. And of all genres, the superhero film is best suited for rebooting and remaking. So, fair enough. Except ... wait a second. Didn’t Spider-Man just get a reboot 10 years ago? Yes, yes he did, in Sam Raimi’s film, which was followed by two sequels. So now he needs another? What’s the shelf life of a character, anyway? And how often do we need these things? “Need” isn’t the operative word here. Studios continue to give us what they think we want, and that’s what we get. And while a steady stream of remakes and reboots may grow tiresome and suggest a Hollywood bereft of ideas, one can look no further than Christopher Nolan’s “Batman” films to see that reboots can bear worthwhile fruit.
