Cytisus scoparius (L.) J.H.F. Link Scotch Broom (Genista andreana, Genista scoparia, Sarothamnus scoparius, Sarothamnus vulgaris, Spartium scoparium) Other Common Names: Broomtops, Common Broom, European Broom, Irish Broom, Scottish Broom. Family: Fabaceae (Leguminosae); sometimes placed in Papilionaceae . Cold Hardiness: USDA zones 6 (5) to 7 (8). Foliage: Alternate, semi-evergreen to deciduous, trifoliate (mostly) to simple (tips of some twigs) leaves are small, ¼O to eO long, medium to dark green in color, but covered in open whitish pubescence, lending a frosted appearance to the margins; no significant fall color develops. Flower: Flowering occurs in spring from buds on old wood with one or two bright yellow :O to 1O diameter indi- vidual flowers; the back petal is the largest and is bilobed; this petal may be yellow (most common color), pink, orangish red, to red outside; flowers are numerous and very showy in bloom. Fruit: Small seeds are borne in 1½O to 2O long pea pod-like explosively dehiscent fuzzy capsules; pods mature from green to tan-brown at maturity, but are not ornamentally effective. Stem / Bark: Stems — young stems are thin, stiff and held erect in a wisp-broom fashion; young and intermediate stems are square in cross-section; new growth is covered in a sparse white pubescence which is slowly lost as the twigs mature; the bark is initially bright green, becoming mottled white and brown as twigs age; Buds — 1 1 nearly foliose with poorly formed bud scales, the tiny /32O to /16O long roundish green buds are tightly ap- pressed to the stems; Bark — bark changes as stems age from green on new twigs, mottled green and brown on older twigs, to striated green and brown on young limbs, to smooth greenish gray to brownish gray on older trunks. -

Koch Common name: French broom, canary broom, cape broom, Montpellier broom, soft broom Family: Fabaceae Legal Status: Proposed Class A noxious weed Description and Variation: (Unless otherwise noted, information in this section is from DiTomaso and Healy (2007). Overall Habit: Genista monspessulana is a shrub in the Fabaceae (legume) family that typically grows less than 3 m (10 feet) tall but sometimes grows to 5 m (16 feet) tall (Baldwin et al. 2012, Bossard 2000). Plants can be evergreen or deciduous; in California G. monspessulana keeps much of its leaves in coastal areas and loses more of its leaves in inland areas (Bossard 2000). Stems are erect, typically leafy and covered in silky, silvery hairs (Baldwin et al. 2012, Stace 2010). Younger stems are green and round in cross-section and often strongly 8-10 ridged, while older stems are brown and may not have ridges. Roots: Genista monspessulana is a taprooted shrub that has fine roots associated with nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Leaves: Leaves are alternately arranged with a petiole (<5mm) and compound with 3 leaflets (Baldwin et al. 2012). Leaflets are oblong to obovate and variable in size with most 10-20 mm long, with the length generally +/- 2 times the width (Baldwin et al. 2012). The leaf’s upper and lower surface is sparsely to densely covered with appressed short, silvery hairs. -

Executive summary This is the final report on work carried out for the biological control of French broom in California by Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation at its European Laboratory in France in collaboration with the USDA European Biological Control Laboratory. Survey trips have been completed to Tunisia, southern Spain and western Portugal. Available resources limited a full suite of planned trips. Morocco and eastern Mediterranean Turkey are the only countries that still need to be surveyed. A recent study of the taxonomy of Genista suggests Morocco is the key region for undiscovered potential biocontrol agents. Analysis of the results of previous trips is presented including validation of the sampling regime and the impacts of seed feeding insects on the seed production of French broom and close relatives. Insect biology and culture development studies have been completed for the psyllid Arytinnis hakani. This species was found to have 5 nymphal instars and be multi-voltine with a 40-45 day generation time, passing the hot summer months as early instar nymphs. Lepidapion argentatum specificity and taxonomic status is unclear from current literature but a PhD project based around this group has recently obtained funding. -
Quantitative Field Surveys for the Selection of Biological Control
Quantitative field surveys for the selection of biological control agents for Genista monspessulana, based on host range and efficacy assessment Andy Sheppard and Thierry Thomann1 Summary Surveys for potential biological control agents of weeds provide opportunities to collect detailed quan- titative data on the community structure of phytophagous species associated with particular plant species and their close relatives. Such studies are still few and far between, but offer increased under- standing of assemblage rules of species with different degrees of host-plant specialization and the numbers and abundances of species in different feeding guilds. Including a range of closely related host plants also allows comparison of natural enemy community structure across similar host-plant species with different local abundances and regional distributions. When such surveys also measure agent impact, they allow agent selection to be based on efficacy as well as specificity. The preliminary results of quantitative surveys of natural enemy communities on species in the tribe Genisteae, particularly Genista monspessulana (French, Montpellier or Cape broom), around the Mediterranean, are presented. Sampling consisted of fixed beating-tray samples on up to ten individual flowering plants per site. Seed pods were also collected from the plants when they matured, and then dissected to quan- tify attack and abundance of seed feeders. Insects collected were sorted to species, and counted and analyzed for species diversity by site and region. Sample sites were selected based on the co-occurrence of two to several host-plant species to allow comparison of host use and abundance. Analysis of the preliminary results is discussed together with the value of quantitative field surveys in biological weed control. -

Southern Plant Lists Southern Garden History Society A Joint Project With The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation September 2000 1 INTRODUCTION Plants are the major component of any garden, and it is paramount to understanding the history of gardens and gardening to know the history of plants. For those interested in the garden history of the American south, the provenance of plants in our gardens is a continuing challenge. A number of years ago the Southern Garden History Society set out to create a ‘southern plant list’ featuring the dates of introduction of plants into horticulture in the South. This proved to be a daunting task, as the date of introduction of a plant into gardens along the eastern seaboard of the Middle Atlantic States was different than the date of introduction along the Gulf Coast, or the Southern Highlands. To complicate maters, a plant native to the Mississippi River valley might be brought in to a New Orleans gardens many years before it found its way into a Virginia garden. A more logical project seemed to be to assemble a broad array plant lists, with lists from each geographic region and across the spectrum of time. The project’s purpose is to bring together in one place a base of information, a data base, if you will, that will allow those interested in old gardens to determine the plants available and popular in the different regions at certain times. This manual is the fruition of a joint undertaking between the Southern Garden History Society and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. In choosing lists to be included, I have been rather ruthless in expecting that the lists be specific to a place and a time. -

Abstract: Two new species, Chamaecytisus korabensis and Ch. pseudojankae, both from Albania, are described and illustrated here. Th e relationship of the new taxa to Ch. ratisbonensis and Ch. eriocarpus agg. is discussed. Ch. korabensis is an endemic species of eastern Albania and related to the Eastern European Ch. ratisbonensis agg. Ch. pseudojankae is an endemic species of the Th atë and Galičica Mountain ranges, and morphologically it is between Ch. austriacus and Ch. eriocarpus agg. Additionally, the names Cytisus absinthioides and C. pygmaeus are lectotypifi ed. Key words: Fabaceae, endemic species, lectotype, taxonomy INTRODUCTION Th e genus Chamaecytisus is distributed from the Canary Islands to Anatolia, occurring throughout the entire Mediterranean region and Europe except for the western and northern parts. Up to now, approximately 350 taxa have been de- scribed in the genus Chamaecytisus Link (incl. ca 120 species). Due to taxonomic and nomenclatural reasons more than 750 related names are present in the litera- ture (Pifkó 2015). Th e treatment of Chamaecytisus taxa is highly variable in monographs, thus the clear elucidation of the known taxa, based on type material, is necessary when describing new species.
