Wander Lancashire & Cheshire Entomological Society November 2003 1 1. Introduction Welcome to the 2002 report on lepidoptera in VC58 (Cheshire). This is the second report to appear in 2003 and follows on from the release of the 2001 version earlier this year. Hopefully we are now on course to return to an annual report, with the 2003 report planned for the middle of next year. Plans for the ‘Atlas of Lepidoptera in VC58’ continue apace. We had hoped to produce a further update to the Atlas but this report is already quite a large document. We will, therefore produce a supplementary report on the Pug Moths recorded in VC58 sometime in early 2004, hopefully in time to be sent out with the next newsletter. As usual, we have produced a combined report covering micro-moths, macro- moths and butterflies, rather than separate reports on all three groups. Doubtless observers will turn first to the group they are most interested in, but please take the time to read the other sections. Hopefully you will find something of interest. Many thanks to all recorders who have already submitted records for 2002. Without your efforts this report would not be possible. Please keep the records coming! This request also most definitely applies to recorders who have not sent in records for 2002 or even earlier. It is never too late to send in historic records as they will all be included within the above-mentioned Atlas when this is produced. -

L.A.S.Johnson (Fabaceae), also known more commonly as Montpellier Broom, Cape Broom and Canary Broom, is a woody legume weed with significant current and potential impacts on forestry production, biodiversity of natural ecosystems, grazing systems, access to amenity areas and fire risk. Infestations occur in all temperate states of Australia, with particularly severe infestations in the Adelaide Hills, southern Tasmania, central and southern Great Dividing Range of NSW, central Victoria and south west WA. G. monspessulana was ranked 37th in the initial evaluation of weeds nominated for Weeds of Natural Significance (WONS) (Thorp and Lynch 2000), with a particularly high impact score due to its formation of dense, impenetrable thickets arising from a long-lived soil seed bank (source: Henry et al . 2010). Species description: G. monspessulana is an erect, perennial slender shrub which grows up to 5-6m. It has trifoliolate petiolate leaves which are more or less glabrous. This species has yellow flowers which are produced from August to January. G. monspessulana occurs in loamy soil through to lateritic and peaty sand and is commonly found along rivers and roadsides (Parsons and Cuthbertson 2001; FLORABASE DEC 2010). G. monspessulana is native to the Mediterranean region that has become established, and is considered a persistent and deleterious plant, in several other regions of the world, including the Americas, Australia and New Zealand. It is considered deleterious because of its ability to form dense almost mono-cultural stands, which replace and suppress native flora and economically valuable timber plants (Lloyd 2000). -

July 1970 Imperial College of Science and Technology, Silwood Park, Sunninghill, ASCOT, Berkshire. -1- ABSTRACT The biology, and in particular the embryonic develop- ment, of two species of Chesias (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) are described and compared. Some aspects of the general biology of these species are examined, and these include the time of occurrence of the different stages of the life cycle, the behaviour (particularly during oviposition) of the adults, and the parasites attacking the larvae. The morphology of the developing embryo is described in detail, and comparisons between the two species are made. Morphogenesis is divided into a number of arbitrary stages, and the relative duration of the different stages is compared. The temperature relations of the developing embryo are examined in detail in both species. In particular, the changing temperature requirements of the embryo of C. leqatella, which diapauses at an early stag- ,are determined by the exam- ination of large samples of eggs killed at different times during embryonic development. Chyliza vittata is known to utilize leaves, stems and underground parts of several leafy and leafl ess orchids. Compared to the well-recorded feeding habits of C. vittata in Europe, its feeding habits in Japan are poorly studied. Thus, further records of its host plants and the habits of its larvae in Japan are likely to reveal the similarities and differences in its feeding habits in Europe and Japan. The current study reports C. vittata feeding on the stems of the mycoheterotrophic orchid Yoania japonica in central Japan. This study also showed that in spite of the small size of Yoania its reproductive success is not severely reduced when infested with C. vittata, whereas the robust stems of Gastrodia elata, which is its main host plant in Japan, are thought to be a defence against infestation by C. vittata. The following six species are treated: Agonopterix scopariella (Heinemann, 1870), A. conciliatella (Rebel, 1892), A. vendettella (Chrétien, 1908) (new to Madeira), A. perezi Walsingham, 1908, Depressaria marcella Rebel, 1901 (new to Madeira and the Azores), and D. halophilella Chrétien, 1908. The latter replaces Depressaria ultimella Stainton, 1849 in the list of Lepidoptera found in Madeira. Depressaria iliensis Rebel, 1936 is a synonym of Agonopterix vendettella (Chrétien, 1908) (syn. nov.). Depressaria halophilella is new to the Canary Islands. We provide brief notes on each of the species and give short diagnoses for correctly identifying them, and we discuss previous misidentifications of Madeiran Depressariinae.
