(266) + 50 ft. (33) + 8 ft. (5). This will give a total of 304 plants for the required hedge. If planning a hedge with double rows for greater wind or stock resistance, simply double up the total reached. 131546 cover 2019 limeflower.indd 2 19/10/2018 15:19 Season 2018-19 Dear Reader 58th edition of the catalogue from the Growers with Altitude Welcome to Weasdale Nurseries in Cumbria’s Howgill Fells. Our north-facing site at 850ft (270m) above sea level means that we endure quite trying growing conditions, with a short growing season but usefully long sales/lifting season that normally extends to the end of April in most years. In our colour pages, we illustrate the care we take in packaging our plants to ensure their safe arrival with you, the customer; no mere bundling into a cardboard box and hoping for the best. Our parcels are quite possibly like no others you have received and are one reason why we can send our trees anywhere with complete confidence. You can find out more on our website. This year we have brought a small container bed into use and so this means that we can now offer a range of plants for sale during the summer months, but these are for collection only during the growing season, requiring dormancy and leaf-drop before we can mail-order them. The catalogue is broken down into sections: Forest Trees / Broadleaved Specimen Trees / Conifers / Hedging / Fruit / Sundries and each section is in alphabetical order by the botanical (ie Latin) names. We know that many find these daunting at first and so there is a common name index at the back with the common names shown alongside the Latin names. Our website sits alongside our catalogue as a shop window, but please do telephone with any enquiries – a quick phone call can cover so much more ground than an email or web research and we do actually like to talk to our customers. Dig out that little pad of “Post-It” notes and a red pen and start planning your 2018-19 planting scheme, knowing that we’re waiting to hear from you. Yours sincerely Andrew Forsyth 131546 Weasdale Catalogue 2018-19.indd 3 24/10/2018 11:41 Contents Frequently Asked Questions .................................................................................................................................................................................................... 7 Forest Trees .................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. 9 Broadleaved Trees and Shrubs ............................................................................................................................................................................................. 12 The Art of Good Mail Order Packing ............................................................................................................................................................ facing page 34 Weasdale Aerial View ........................................................................................................................................................................................facing page 35 Conifers ....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... 78 Hedging Plants .......................................................................................................................................................................................................................... 98 Tree-Protection Gallery ......................................................................................................................................................................................facing page 98 Product Gallery ...................................................................................................................................................................................................facing page 99 Fruit Trees ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ 104 Sundries ..................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... 113 Books and Audio ..................................................................................................................................................................................................................... 119 Methods and Terms of Business ....................................................................................................................................................................................... 120 Useful Information .................................................................................................................................................................................................................. 124 Glossary of Horticultural Terms ........................................................................................................................................................................................... 125 Common Name Index .......................................................................................................................................................................................................... 126 131546 Weasdale Catalogue 2018-19.indd 4 24/10/2018 11:41 Contents To New Customers As a mail order nursery in a remote rural area, the main core of our workload Frequently Asked Questions .................................................................................................................................................................................................... 7 is geared to the arrival of business by mail, email and phone, and to packing Weasdale Nurseries were started in 1950, located at the northern edge of the and despatching trees
