A SELF GUIDED WALKING TOUR

June 29, 2016

Did you know… Webster’s Dictionary describes the word gazebo as “probably humorously formed from gaze” while other sources suggest derivation from the Hispano-Arabic word “qushaybah.” In 1750 the word was used in Rural Architecture in the Chinese Taste (John & William Halfpenny) to identify a “Chinese Tower… situated on a Rock, and raised to a considerable height, and a Gallery round it to render the Prospect more complete.” Whatever the origin of the word, it is generally understood to describe a roofed structure that provides an attractive view. The materials used may be rustic or refined; the decorative elements may be more or less elaborate, staid or whimsical. Several examples can be found in the garden and all provide a sheltered view of the surrounding plantings. There are two in the formal garden style near Bloemendaal House. One is sited in the Grace Arents Garden. The other, titled the “Lace House”, stands on the rise directly in front of the original carriage entrance. This octagonal gazebo, with elaborate scrollwork was built in the 1850’s for a residence on Governor Street. In Rob’s Garden a minimalist metal gazebo provides a secluded space for quiet contemplation. At the west end of Lake Sydnor you will find two more examples, one in the rustic vernacular. Occasionally you may come upon an artist taking advantage of the directed gaze from these decorative garden structures.
