The Fairfield Seniors’ Recreational Directory has been developed to provide seniors with information about recreational groups and activities that are available across Fairfield City’s 27 suburbs. While every attempt has been made to ensure that the information in this directory is current, it is realised that some groups/activities may have been missed or have not heard of the directory. It is advisable to ring the organisation/group listed here to confirm the time and date of activities that may have changed since the update of this edition. An effort will be made to update this directory regularly within available resources. Please refer to the forms at the end of the directory if you are a community organisation or group that would like your information included or updated in the directory. Incorporated groups are also able to take advantage of Council’s community facilities for the provision of groups, activities and events and the use of Council buses. The Fairfield Seniors’ Recreational Directory aims to connect seniors with recreational groups and activities that increase social interaction, physical activity and provide support and educational development. The diverse groups and activities outlined in the directory aim to promote a healthy ageing community that provides opportunities for seniors to improve their physical, mental and social health. The format of the 2018 Directory has been updated to divide the recreational activities into three healthy ageing categories, which include: LIFELONG LEARNING HEALTH & SOCIAL WELLBEING The division into three healthy ageing categories aims to make it simpler for seniors to find a group or activity that suits their wants and needs. For more information regarding healthy ageing and service information, please refer to page 45. 5 • Research has found that lifelong learning helps improve mental function and the ability to adapt to change. • Creative recreational activities help improve skill development, self-expression and self-confidence. Lifelong • Learning skills with others can improve interpersonal skills Learning and make you feel more connected to the community. • According to the Department of Health, 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise is the recommended daily requirement to improve heart, lung, muscle and bone function. • Exercising has multiple benefits, it can assist in reducing stress and anxiety, reducing the risk of heart disease and Health & diabetes and help prevents falls. Wellbeing • Exercising also provides an increased sense of wellbeing by improving concentration and self-confidence. • Research has found socialising has many benefits in improving mental function and emotional health. • Socialising can assist in reducing feelings of loneliness, which has been found to have a negative impact on emotional and physical health. ARTEXPRESS is a showcase of HSC Bodies of Work, as a Schools Spectacular high quality teaching and learning resource representing best practice in visual arts education. The works are nominated by HSC markers deemed to be excellent examples What a privilege it was to go to the Schools Spectacular, of Bodies of Work. The amount of time that students have dedicated to perfect and ‘Own the Moment’ to see the amazing talent of performing arts produce their work is a reflection of their passion and commitment to deliver high students from NSW public schools. The sheer scale and quality quality work. Behind outstanding student achievement is always exemplary teaching of the production was incredibly impressive, professional and practice that empowers students to understand and produce work that is included as entertaining. I was so proud to hear our own Year 8 student, some of the best work in NSW HSC Visual Arts. It is an honour to gain representative status as an athlete and we look forward to the performances of those who may emulate the careers of many of the current and former Socceroos, Young Socceroos and A-League players who have participated at these championships. From this championship the NSW Combined High Schools State teams to compete in the NSW All Schools Tournament during June will be announced. This event also serves as the trials for this year’s School Sport Australia, which will be held in Perth during August.
