Profits from these concerts will be applied to emergency relief work ^f the United Nations agencies. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) is the lead agency of the United Nations system in a joint effort with the International Committee of the Red Cr^ss (iCRC) to provide relief to the civilian population _f Kampuchea. According to nost accounts, the country has lost up to half of its population of about 8 million in the mid-70s and is suffering appalling malnutrition, particularly among children of whom up to 90 per cent are severely malnourished".

He expresses his appreciation to all who are contributing tc this effort.

Dear Mr. Secretary General,

Before he left for Europe, Lorin Maazel asked me to write to you on his behalf regarding the proposed benefit con- cert for the relief of Cambodian refugees, which he discussed with you last week and which we hope to organize to take place in the General Assembly Hall of the United Nations in January.

The Maestro asked me to tell you that he very much appreciates the time element involved, but that he is not yet able to confirm the programme. NOTE FOR THE FILE

Professor Lorin Maazel called the Secretary-General today and suggested the organization of a charity concert in favour of the starving population of Kampuchea in the General Assembly Hall at the beginning of next year and inquired whether the Secretary-General would concur with this idea., The Secretary- General reacted in principal favourably but non-committally and stressed that all details would have to be worked out by the organizers. The United Nations could only provide the General Assembly Hall and technical help. In his conversation with Professor Maazel the Secretary-General also mentioned UNICEF as a possible recipient of the net benefit and made it clear that the United Nations could not accept any financial commitment in this regard. Professor Maazel will contact us again once his idea has developed in more detail.

Note for the Secretary-General

Sir, I informed Dirk Summers that you are in agreement that John Lennon can call you from the apartment of Leonard Bernstein. He said that Mr. Lennon would call you. today or tomorrow.

On that occasion, I had an exchange of views with Mr. Summers about the proposed concert and I was surprised to hear that the idea was to arrange the concert in Geneva. He said that security reason was behind it. The Beatles were of the view that from security point of view, Geneva is much better than New York. I explained to Mr. Summers that security problem does not exist. Also I added that with full respect for Geneva, it is a provincial city. In continuation of our conversation, I had given my personal views to Mr. Summers and I pointed out that New York and UN Headquarters would be the best place. He said that he changed his mind and his thoughts would be now in favour of UN Headquarters. I repeated that I discussed this on my personal capacity and final approval would be given by you when we reach the stage to make decision about the concert. 9. Rudolf Stajduhar IT October 1979

Note for the Secretary-General

Sir,

I had a telephone call this morning from Dirk Summers to convey to me the following: Pursuing the possibility of a Beatles Concert for Indochinese refugees, Mr. Summers spoke to Leonard Bernstein who explained to him that he was a friend of Mr. Waldheim. Mr. Bernstein and Mr. Summers are proposing to you that,to solve the problem now, it would be advisable if you would agree to speak to John Lennon. Mr. Bernstein is of the view that the best would be to arrange a meeting in his apartment. I explained to Mr. Summers that the Secretary-General appreciates his continuing efforts but it would not be possible for the Secretary- General to accept this formula. I said that I believe you would accept to taj.k_jbo John Lennon on thetelepjidne and support the idea ofjthe concert. ' Mr. Summers says that you should explain to John Lennon the desperate situation of Indochinese refugees and your strong support for the concert. Mr. Summers concluded that in view of the fact that you had already spoken to George Harrison, who is the spokesman of the three Beatles, it would be advisable that you have a word with John Lennon. If you accept this, I would arrange to have John Lennon call you from Mr. Bernstein's apartment. f ..v Miss Kazuko Hillyer called this morning. She said that she -works together with Dr. Summer of UNHCR and is very anxious to speak to the SG personally with regard to the developments of the efforts to bring the Beatles together for a benefit concert. She said that she is a personal friend of Yoko Ono and would like to explain the whole situation with regard to the Lennons to the SG. She said the Lennons never received the SG's letter; that they were very suspicious what this whole plan was concerned; they were very upset with regard to the leakage in the press yesterday, but, although Mts.Lennon declined without any doubt he now was ready to re- consider . Miss Hillyer said that she could be reached at home (799-6935) until about 11.00 am, and then in her office (581-3644). At 1O.3O AM. Miss Hillyer called again to say that she just spoke to the Lennons who said that they did not need to speak to Dr. Waldheim themselves but that the original letter and the contract would suffice, if they could see that. Miss Hillyer said that I could call Amb. von Wechmar with regard to her identity. Liesel 22 Sep 1979
