A Descriptive Study of Serial Killers and the Presence of Macdonald Triad Symptoms Vivian Alexis Zuniga A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of GRAND VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of Master of Science in Criminal Justice School of Criminal Justice April 2021 5/12/2021 ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to determine if there was an increased likelihood of the presence of Macdonald Triad symptoms (animal cruelty, bedwetting, and firesetting) based on different types of abuse (physical, sexual, or psychological) among serial killers. The sample of this study was of 149 serial killers, all of whom met the requirements of being male and having killed 3 or more victims. The results support the three hypotheses that serial killers who have faced physical, sexual, or psychological abuse were more likely to display Macdonald Triad symptoms compared to those who were not abused. In addition, the study determined whether lust serial killers were more likely to display Macdonald Triad symptoms compared to other types of serial killers and found that lust killers had a greater likelihood of displaying both acts of animal cruelty and bedwetting, but not firesetting. It draws the attention of the people that there can be a person among them that has killed multiple victims and has gotten away with it. People begin to ask, “what type of person could do such a thing?” or “how is it possible that they haven’t gotten caught?” but what they do not realize is that the whys and hows of serial murder are extremely complex. The actions of a serial killer often may seem random, which is what garners attention, but even though these acts of killing seem random to the average person, serial murderers kill using their own twisted logic, even though it may not seem logical or justifiable to us (Warf & Waddell, 2002). Because of this, the idea that serial killers are insane often arises, but in reality, they typically cannot be classified as legally insane, meaning that they are aware of the consequences of their actions, and appreciate that they are morally wrong, even though they may be unimaginably cruel to the average person (Warf & Waddell, 2002). Serial murder is more than just killing, it is the product of deranged individuals displaying their psychological defects. The news media gains attention when they discuss cases of serial murder because they know that there is a fascination with death among people, but they rarely discuss the motives of the serial killer, or the events leading up to their reigns of terror (Hodgkinson et al., 2016; 2017). The purpose of this thesis will be to examine whether or not having been abused makes it more likely that a killer will exhibit Macdonald Triad symptoms. In addition, this project will determine if serial killers who have been sexually abused are more likely to become a specific type of serial killer known as a “lust killer”. Prior to doing the empirical analysis, this thesis will provide an overview of serial murder in general, and the more specific art and science of 6 criminal profiling, which has been widely used in the investigation of, and research about, serial killers. Definitions and Typologies Before reviewing the literature, it is important to establish some basic definitional criteria. Holmes and Holmes (2010) define serial murder as “the killing of three or more people over a period of more than 30 days, with a significant cooling-off period between the killings,” (p. 5-6). They designed a typology to distinguish different types of serial killers based on their motives and anticipated gains; serial killers will sometimes have ideal victim types whereby they hunt victims based on race, occupation, or even something as simple as their hair color (Holmes & Holmes, 2010). There are four categories of serial killers in this typology: visionary, mission, power/control, and hedonistic (Holmes & Holmes, 2009). Visionary killers are those who are psychotic and end up killing due to some kind of psychotic break. They usually do not have an ideal victim type and it is common that their reasoning does not make sense, except to them (Miller, 2013). As a result, the victims of visionary killers can be chosen at random (Holmes & Holmes, 2010). In contrast, mission oriented serial killers do have an ideal victim type, because they feel that it is their job to rid the world of an “unwanted” group of people: their reasoning can be due to personal opinions, and they may choose their victims because of their race or occupation (Miller, 2013). A common group of people that are targets of mission serial killers are prostitutes (Holmes & Holmes, 2010). Similar to mission-oriented killers, power/control killers also have ideal victim types, but they kill to feel powerful and in control of their victims. Usually, 7 power/control killers target a certain group of people because of the availability of victims, again, prostitutes are frequent targets (Holmes & Holmes,

  • Lay Profiles of Mass and Serial Killers
Running head: LAY PROFILES OF MASS AND SERIAL KILLERS Lay Profiles of Mass and Serial Killers Kelli Terrell, Narina Nunez University of Wyoming LAY PROFILES OF MASS AND SERIAL KILLERS 2 Abstract It was hypothesized that society profiles mass murderers in a very specific way contradicting the reality of who the offenders are statistically shown to be. It was correspondingly hypothesized that a mass murderer is labeled more commonly as mentally ill and socially isolated than a serial killer, regardless of the death toll. To assess the lay profile of killers, participants were randomly assigned to either a mass killer or serial killer crime scenario. They then read a brief description of the crime and completed extended response and multiple choice questions on characteristics of the offender. Results supported the hypothesis that the lay profile of a serial killer and mass killer differ in mental health differ greatly. Additionally, the hypothesis that the lay profile differs from who killers are statistically shown to be was both supported and denied. LAY PROFILES OF MASS AND SERIAL KILLERS 3 Introduction The United States’ Congressional Research Services acknowledges that there is no generally excepted definition for what a mass shooting is but loosely defines it as “incidents occurring in relatively public places, involving four or more deaths- not including the shooter(s)- and gunmen who select victims somewhat indiscriminately” (Bjelopera, 2013). Mass shootings are defined slightly differently in Public Law 112-265 as three or more killings in a single incident (United States Congress, 2013). The disparity between these two definitions highlights both the confusion and lack of research done in regards to mass shootings.

Joker (2019 film) - Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joker_(2019_film) Joker (2019 film) Joker is a 2019 American psychological thriller film directed by Todd Joker Phillips, who co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver. The film, based on DC Comics characters, stars Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker. An origin story set in 1981, the film follows Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian who turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City. Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Bill Camp, Shea Whigham, and Marc Maron appear in supporting roles. Joker was produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Films, and Joint Effort in association with Bron Creative and Village Roadshow Pictures, and distributed by Warner Bros. Phillips conceived Joker in 2016 and wrote the script with Silver throughout 2017. The two were inspired by 1970s character studies and the films of Martin Scorsese, who was initially attached to the project as a producer. The graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke (1988) was the basis for the premise, but Phillips and Silver otherwise did not look to specific comics for inspiration. Phoenix became attached in February 2018 and was cast that July, while the majority of the cast signed on by August. Theatrical release poster Principal photography took place in New York City, Jersey City, and Newark, from September to December 2018. It is the first live-action Directed by Todd Phillips theatrical Batman film to receive an R-rating from the Motion Picture Produced by Todd Phillips Association of America, due to its violent and disturbing content.

  • His Brothers' Keeper
His Brothers’ Keeper Lawyer Gregory Stanton refuses to let the world ignore the genocide of two million Kampucheans. This is the story of their tragedy and his dedication. By Michael Matza There is a compelling sense of mission about 35-year-old Gregory Howard Stanton, a 1982 graduate of Yale Law School. This past April, Stanton launched a one- man effort he calls the Kampuchean Genocide Project, through which he hopes to raise $300,000 to send researchers and scientists to Southeast Asia to gather evidence that would document—precisely and for posterity—the crimes of the Pol Pot government in Democratic Kampuchea (Cambodia) from April 1975 through the end of 1978. Although it was thrown out of power by a Vietnamese-backed invasion in 1979, the government that was named for Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot still represents Kampuchea as part of a united front in the United Nations. That it does so belies a past that survivors of Khmer Rouge brutalities remember with dread. In the three and a half years that it was in power, the Pol Pot regime is said to have intentionally murdered at least one million Kampucheans and to have imposed conditions of slave labor, starvation, and forced evacuations that resulted in the deaths of more than one million others. In a country of approximately eight million people, one quarter of the population was systematically exterminated through a maniacal program that seemed like the Final Solution writ small. For Greg Stanton, such mind-boggling carnage imposes a personal obligation. “There are people who can become numb to the killing.

  • The Case of J Effrey Dah M Er
5 THE CASE OF J EFFREY DAH M ER OVERVIEW This chapter specifically addresses the highly publicized case of Jeffrey Dahmer, a serial lust murderer responsible for the death and mutilation of 17 young men. In an attempt to create a working profile, several factors linked to Dahmer's social and family history, sexuality, education, employment status, fantasy system, and criminality are discussed. In Chapter 6, this developmental portrait is linked to the three principal theoretical models discussed within Chapters 3 and 4. Specifically, Chapter 6 explores what insights the motivational, trauma control, and integrative paraphilic typologies offer in their accounts of Jeffrey Dahmer's criminal behavior. This exercise is particularly useful since the goal is to ascertain the extent to which each conceptual schema advances our understanding of serial sexual homicide (i.e., lust murder) and those persons who commit this act. This chapter is divided into two sections. First, several methodological issues germane to our overall assessment of Jeffrey Dahmer are delineated. Given that our approach emphasizes the case study investigatory strategy, a number of remarks relevant to this line of analysis are warranted. Some observations regard- ing the elements of the case study method are specified, several justifications for the selection of a qualitative approach are outlined, and a description of the data is supplied. Second, both historical and biographical information concerning Dahmer's life is provided. These data are sequenced chronologically, commencing with his early childhood development and moving all the way to his violent fantasies, criminal conduct, and paraphilic behaviors. Profiling his case in this way allows 67 68 THE PSYCHOLOGY OF LUST MURDER the reader to assess the merits of the general organization and facilitates a more comprehensive and seamless evaluation within the application work undertaken in Chapter 6.

It does not fulfil the widely accepted existing definition of genocide but the high rate of abortion of legitimate girl-foetus by Indian parents makes their crime a kind of group killing or genocide. The female foeticide in post-colonial India is not a modern phenomenon but was also prevalent in pre-colonial India since antiquity as female infanticide and the custom continued in the 19th century in many communities of colonial India, documentation of which are widely available in various archives. In spite of the Act of 1870 passed by the Colonial Government to suppress the practice, treating it a murder and punishing the perpetrators of the crime with sentence of death or transportation for life, the crime of murdering their girl children did not stop. During a period of five to ten years after the promulgation of the Act around 333 cases of female infanticide were tried and 16 mothers were sentenced to death, 133 to transportation for life and others for various terms of rigorous imprisonment in colonial India excluding British Burma and Assam where no such crime was reported.

The massage parlor also caught on fire and Miss Lee, despite the fact she had been slashed in the neck and stabbed in the back, managed to free herself and take refuge in another room. She was still trapped inside, however, and two security guards saw smoke pouring from the building, saw her trying to get out, and after breaking a glass in the door, pulled her to safety.
