  • Visakha Puja: Celebration of the Day of Vesak
Visakha Puja: Celebration of the Day of Vesak By Prof. Dr. Phra Dharmakosajarn Rector, Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University Bangkok, Thailand Definition Visakha Puja, or the Day of Vesak, is the festival celebrating the birth, enlightenment and parinibbana (passing away) of the Lord Buddha. It falls on the full moon day of the month of Visakha or Vesak, the sixth lunar month, (which usually falls during the period May in the Gregorian calendar). Significance According to the Theravada tradition, the three most important events in the life of the Buddha – his birth, his achievement of enlightenment and his entry into of parinibbana – all occurred on the full moon day of Visakha. Aspects of the Dharma relating to the birth, enlightenment and parinibbana of the Buddha include gratitude, the Four Noble Truths and mindfulness. Historical Life of the Buddha The Buddha was born in Lumbini Park, between the cities Kapilavastu and Devadaha of the Sakya Kingdom, in present – day Nepal, on the morning of Friday, the fifteenth waxing day of the sixth lunar month, 623 BCE, 80 years before the beginning of the Buddhist Era. He exchanged the household life for that of an ascetic and after much strenuous effort attained full enlightenment at Uruvela in the kingdom of Magadha, present – day Bodhgaya, India, on the morning of Wednesday, the fifteenth waxing day of the sixth lunar month, 45 years before beginning of the Buddhist Era. After his enlightenment, he taught those who were able to receive his teaching and countless men and women achieved enlightenment. The Buddha achieved parinibbana, that is, he passed from this world, at the age of 80 on Tuesday, the fifteenth waxing day of the sixth lunar month in the Sala Park of the Malla near the town of Kusinara in the Malla Kingdom, present day Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, India.

  • ANNEX 1: Climate Risk Profile for Thailand and Project Target Areas
PIMS 3771 THAILAND SCCF Project - Annexes ANNEX 1: Climate Risk Profile for Thailand and Project Target Areas Location &Climate of Thailand Thailand is located between 5°40’ and 20°30’ N latitudes and 97°20’ and 105°45’ E longitudes in South East Asia. The country borders Myanmar to the north and west, Laos to the northeast, Cambodia to the east and Malaysia to the south. Thailand can be divided into four major natural geographic regions: the mountainous north the arid northeast, comprised mainly by the Korat Plateau the fertile central plains, which include the Chao Phraya River Basin, and the southern peninsula. Thailand’s 2,600 km coastline runs mainly along the Gulf of Thailand (1,660km), with a shorter stretch of coast along the Andaman Sea (950km) on the western side of the southern peninsula. The Gulf of Thailand is relatively shallow and has an area of 30,400km², while the Andaman Sea is much larger and deeper. There are altogether 23 provinces (including Bangkok) along the two coasts, with most bordering the Gulf of Thailand, a few along the Andaman Sea, and a few with borders along both coasts. The proposed project focuses on Thailand’s narrow southern peninsula, which is flanked by the Gulf of Thailand to the east, the Andaman Sea to the west and Malaysia to the south. Thailand’s climate is classified as tropical savannah in the ‘mainland’ and tropical monsoon in the southern peninsula, which experiences a slightly different climate because of its geography and its close proximity to the sea. Across the country there are three main seasons; hot, wet and mild.

  • 15-Southeastern Thailand-Tha13.Indd
© Lonely Planet Publications 228 Southeastern Thailand There’s nothing moderate about southeastern Thailand. Catering to holidaying hedonists and laid-back hippies, the region represents the many attractions of Thailand – in their extremes. First there’s Pattaya, a testosterone-fuelled, heavy-breathing resort town, where skirts are short and heels high. It’s reinventing itself as a family place, but Pattaya still sweats a buzzy late-night aphrodisiac. At the other end of the region, in geography and intensity, is Mu Ko Chang National Marine Park, where islands rise from waters the colour of blue skies and are just as clear. And then there’s everything in between. The razzle-dazzle of jewels lures dealers to Chanthaburi’s gem markets. Equally alluring are Ko Samet’s aquamarine waters and white beaches, which once earned it a name that translates to ‘Vast Jewel Isle’, and on weekends you can watch – or join – Bangkok locals as they make a different kind of trade: weekday anxieties for weekend amusements. More subdued but no less attractive are the region’s subtle hints of Old Siam: teak houses and pier buildings scattered along the coast. Si Racha’s pier-front looks across the cargo ship–studded water to Ko Si Chang, a quiet island with hillside temples often overlooked by weekend Bang- kok escapees. Trat Province, with its riverside ambience and excellent budget lodgings, invites backpackers en route to Mu Ko Chang and Cambodia to ease off the travellers’ accelerator. Finally, several national parks round out the offerings. In the northern area around Prachin- SOUTHEASTERN THAILAND buri, white-water rafting and mountain biking are on offer, while in the smaller parks near the coast, day trips to tiered waterfalls offer shady respite from the buzz of towns and traffic.
