“Now There's a Good Woman”: How Rural Life Course Events Shape “NOW THERE’S A GOOD WOMAN”: HOW RURAL LIFE COURSE EVENTS SHAPE THE RESPONSE TO COGNITIVE DECLINE IN OLDER WOMEN A DISSERTATION IN Nursing Presented to the Faculty of the University of Missouri-Kansas City in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by CHRISTINE MARIE EISENHAUER B.A., Mount Marty College, 1997 M.S.N., University of Nebraska Medical Center, 2003 Kansas City, Missouri 2012 ©2012 CHRISTINE MARIE EISENHAUER ALL RIGHTS RESERVED “NOW THERE’S A GOOD WOMAN”: HOW RURAL LIFE COURSE EVENTS SHAPE THE RESPONSE TO COGNITIVE DECLINE IN OLDER WOMEN Christine Marie Eisenhauer, Candidate for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2012 ABSTRACT Aims: This dissertation aimed to: (1) analyze the life-course experiences of rural, older women and the impact of those experiences on their values, health-illness behaviors and decision-making, particularly surrounding cognitive decline; (2) compare and contrast the values, health-illness behaviors and decision-making of the older women with those of three younger generations of rural women; and (3) examine findings with the local community to explore ways of working with the formal health care system to identify culturally acceptable ways to deal with cognitive decline. Background: Cognitive decline is a continuum that includes levels of memory problems, poor judgment, confusion, personality change, and difficulty with planning and social functioning. In a pilot study, rural, older women identified cognitive decline, or “losing one’s mind,” as the most significant fear and concern for which they desired interventions. The isolation of the rural lifestyle has made these women value independence and self-reliance as essential characteristics for survival. Chronic illnesses, such as progressive types of cognitive iii decline, significantly threaten the functional and cognitive independence, safety, and quality of life of this population. Method: An ethnographic design utilized in-depth life history interviews with four key informants across one year, focus groups with cross-generational cohorts (n=20), participant observation, and review of cultural artifacts. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and thematically analyzed. Findings: Findings include: (1) historical knowledge indicates belonging, (2) drifting about but not out, (3) gender roles- men protect from outside, women protect from inside, (4) neighbors as a network, (5) trust as an exchangeable commodity, (6) the new outsiders: health service insensitivity reinforces distrust, (7) then and now: loss of social capital, (8) come and eat, (9) there’s no place like home, (10) self-determination, (11) all natural please, (12) suffering continuum, (13) stoicism begets emotional disconnect with the health-illness experience, (14) I need help but it is a private matter, and (15) protective silence-avoidance. DOBSON University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada ABSTRACT: It has often been observed that Alice Munro is a master of narrative complexity. “The love of a good woman”, in particular, is a story that challenges conventional notions of structure in short fiction through digression or deferral, discontinuity, layering, and so on. Ross (2002) rightly observes that conventional theories of reading fail to get at the process involved in achieving successful “apprenticeship” with Munro’s short fiction. This paper explores the intricacies of Munro’s creative craft as exemplified in “The love of a good woman” and proposes an approach to facilitating students’ engagement with complex narratives. Through creative writing in a computer-based “wiki” environment, it is argued, we encourage students to undertake the project of “layering” narrative and of establishing and interrogating complex narrative relations. This creative exercise, in turn, may facilitate their understanding of short fiction such as Munro’s. KEYWORDS: Digital literacy, textuality, English education, literacy education.     Things within Things Possible Readings of Alice Munro’s “The Love of a Good Woman” Ulrica Skagert University of Kristianstad Abstract: Alice Munro’s “The Love of a Good Woman” is perhaps one of the most important stories in her œuvre in terms of how it accentuates the motivation for the Nobel Prize of Literature: “master of the contemporary short story.” The story was first published in The New Yorker in December 1996, and over 70 pages long it pushes every rule of what it means to be categorised as short fiction. Early critic of the genre, Edgar Allan Poe distinguished short fiction as an extremely focused attention to plot, properly defined as that to which “no part can be displaced wit- hout ruin to the whole”. Part of Munro’s art is that of stitching seemingly disparate narrative threads together and still leaving the reader with a sense of complete- ness. The story’s publication in The New Yorker included a subtitle that is not part of its appearing in the two-year-later collection. The subtitle, “a murder, a mystery, a romance,” is interesting in how it is suggestive for possible interpretations and the story’s play with genres. In a discussion of critical readings of Munro’s story, I propose that the story’s resonation of significance lies in its daring composition of narrative threads where depths of meaning keep occurring depending on what aspects one is focusing on for the moment. Further, I suggest that a sense of completion is created in tone and paralleling of imagery.

We will make a resounding case to portray that Achike belongs to the category of liberal feminism. However, as events unfolds, she was forced by situations beyond her control to respond and go radical in order to crush anything that stands in her way to happiness. Efforts will be made to show how African women are rated based on the real and good women as represented by Ifeoma and Beatrice Achike respectively. This essay in exploring the different tenets of feminism will acknowledge that radical feminism is an off shoot of violence. We shall argue that radical feminism is a radical reaction to dehumanization, humiliation, and violence. This study seeks to address the issue of feminism and how characters subject to series of humiliation that leads to a radical approach to gain their freedom.     Chapter 1 Writing in the Margins: Jean Rhys One of the most striking aspects of the current Jean Rhys revival is the extent to which readers united in their determination to praise Rhys have divided on the issue of autobiography in her novels. The mainstream critics who undertook the rehabilitation of her reputa­ tion in the early 1970s seemed to find the autobiographical sources of her subject matter a distraction, if not an outright embarrassment. 1 They were inclined instead to stress the formal finish and control of her prose style, to admire her ironic distance from the characters and incidents she describes, and to universalize her protagonists and the situations in which they find themselves, to the point where Rhys was represented as writing, as Elgin Mellown puts it, about "woman in one of her archetypal roles." Diana Trilling goes further: 'Rhys published one collection of short stories and four novels between 1927 and 1939, after which she effectively disappeared from public notice until 1956, when the actress Selma Vaz Dias (who had actually been in contact with Rhys, with interrup­ tions, since 1949) had the BBC place an advertisement in the New Statesman. "Redis­ covered" by this maneuver, Rhys felt encouraged to write the novel Wide Sargasso Sea (1966) and to publish two more collections of stories and an "unfinished auto­ biography" before her death in 1979. The appearance of Wide Sargasso Sea resuscitated her reputation and led to the reissuing of the earlier novels. A. Alvarez's review essay, "The Best Living English Novelist'' (New York Times Book Review, 17 March 1974, 6-7) and Howard Moss's "Going to Pieces" in the "Books" column of the New Yorker(50 [16 December 1974], 161-62) are two of the key critical pieces establishing Rhys as a major, indeed a canonical English writer.

Her well-researched, tightly-plotted, highly emotional, action-packed novels with their socially- and politically-pertinent messages have firmly entrenched the romance genre in the previously male-dominated world of the military thriller and expanded the reach and relevance of the romance genre far beyond its stereotypical boundaries. Suzanne and her family, including one older sister, Carolee, born 28 January, 1958, lived in Pearl River, N.Y., Guilford, Conn., and Farmingdale, N.Y., following Fred Brockmann’s career as a Superintendent of Schools.
