© 2014 Andrea Cipriano Barra ALL RIGHTS RESERVED BEYOND THE BODICE RIPPER: INNOVATION AND CHANGE IN THE ROMANCE NOVEL INDUSTRY by ANDREA CIPRIANO BARRA A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School—New Brunswick Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Sociology Written under the direction of Karen A. Cerulo And approved by _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ New Brunswick, New Jersey OCTOBER 2014 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Beyond the Bodice Ripper: Innovation and Change in the Romance Novel Industry By ANDREA CIPRIANO BARRA Dissertation Director: Karen A. Cerulo Romance novels have changed significantly since they first entered the public consciousness. Instead of seeking to understand the changes that have occurred in the industry, in readership, in authorship, and in the romance novel product itself, both academic and popular perception has remained firmly in the early 1980s when many of the surface criticisms were still valid."Using Wendy Griswold’s (2004) idea of a cultural diamond, I analyze the multiple and sometimes overlapping relationships within broader trends in the romance industry based on content analysis and interviews with romance readers and authors. Three major issues emerge from this study. First, content of romance novels sampled from the past fourteen years is more reflective of contemporary ideas of love, sex, and relationships. Second, romance has been a leader and innovator in the trend of electronic publishing, with major independent presses adding to the proliferation of subgenres and pushing the boundaries of what is considered romance. Finally, readers have a complicated relationship with the act of reading romance and what the books mean in their lives.

  • Articles from 2016
Preview Shelf Articles for 2016 December 1, 2016 Discovering the Wild Heritage of the Nineteenth State By Dianne Combs It has been a wonderful year of celebration for the state of Indiana. Two hundred years of statehood! We have learned many things about our political and historical heritage, but I believe that Indiana still has many secrets that need to be learned. Here at the library we have some beautiful books that will help you explore the natural history of our great state. “The Natural Heritage of Indiana,” edited by Marion T. Jackson, takes us on a lively jaunt through the terrain of our great state. To my delight, the very first picture in Part One is of the “Honeycomb Rock” at Pine Hills Nature Preserve in the southwestern part of Montgomery County. Glaciation and its effects on our landscape are explained in detail, which helps me to understand all the rock formations I come across while exploring some of our nationally renowned state parks. Throughout this section, written by Henry Gray, we are taken on several tours of Indiana. He describes the terrain as if he were driving along highways and illustrates his discussion with appropriate topographical maps. Our soil and water, wetlands and caves — all these give our state its unique stamp on the map of our nation. Beautiful photographs of the flora and fauna of Indiana fill the pages of this coffee table book. I could spend hours just turning its pages, learning about the native plants and animals with which we share our land. We have recently acquired two copies of “A Place Called Turkey Run — A Celebration of Indiana’s Second State Park in Photographs and Words,” by Daniel P.

  • The Love of a Good Narrative: Textuality and Digitality TERESA M
English Teaching: Practice and Critique September 2006, Volume 5, Number 2 http://education.waikato.ac.nz/research/files/etpc/2006v5n2art4.pdf pp. 56-68 The love of a good narrative: Textuality and digitality TERESA M. DOBSON University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada ABSTRACT: It has often been observed that Alice Munro is a master of narrative complexity. “The love of a good woman”, in particular, is a story that challenges conventional notions of structure in short fiction through digression or deferral, discontinuity, layering, and so on. Ross (2002) rightly observes that conventional theories of reading fail to get at the process involved in achieving successful “apprenticeship” with Munro’s short fiction. This paper explores the intricacies of Munro’s creative craft as exemplified in “The love of a good woman” and proposes an approach to facilitating students’ engagement with complex narratives. Through creative writing in a computer-based “wiki” environment, it is argued, we encourage students to undertake the project of “layering” narrative and of establishing and interrogating complex narrative relations. This creative exercise, in turn, may facilitate their understanding of short fiction such as Munro’s. KEYWORDS: Digital literacy, textuality, English education, literacy education. THE LOVE OF A GOOD NARRATIVE: TEXTUALITY AND DIGITALITY The title story of Munro’s The love of a good woman begins in a small-town Ontario museum where, among the butter churns and horse harnesses, is displayed a box of optometrist’s instruments along with an explanatory note: “This box . has considerable local significance, since it belonged to Mr. D.M. Willens, who drowned in the Peregrine River, 1951.
