New Investigations into a Historic Treatment: The Efficacy of Gelatin as an Adhesive for Earthen Finishes at Mesa Verde National Park Abstract This thesis comes out of years of work beginning in 1994 undertaken by Frank Matero and the University of Pennsylvania to stabilize the earthen surface finishes of Mesa erV de National Park in Southwestern Colorado. The aim of this research is to better understand the performance and deterioration mechanisms for gelatin treatments used to reattach earthen plasters and washes. Threats to the treatment method include biodeterioration and failure due to wet-dry cycles and humidity fluctuations. The adhesive’s durability to these weathering phenomena was researched and evaluated through testing proxy samples in the Architectural Conservation Laboratory of the University of Pennsylvania. (All tests conducted are listed in the Testing Matrix: Appendix A) The goals of this project were to: • Understand the properties, manufacturing process, history and use in conservation of gelatin as an adhesive and identify its greatest vulnerabilities • Evaluate the bond strength and wet-dry and freeze-thaw deterioration that can occur once the gelatin treatment has been applied to earthen finishes in formulations that include glycerin as an additive • Determine the most effective method of testing a conservation material’s bioreceptivity and apply it to gelatin • Synthesize new data and data from previous research to establish climatic conditions for optimal performance of gelatin at Mesa Verde and other earthen sites Disciplines Historic Preservation and Conservation Comments Suggested Citation: Aloiz, Emily M.     47(2) LRTS 59 The Preservation Evolution A Review of Preservation Literature, 1999–2001 JeanAnn Croft The literature representing 1999 to 2001 reveals that the preservation field is absorbed in an evolution. The literature demonstrates that trusted practices are changing to improve outcomes and further advance the preservation field. Simultaneously, in the wake of the digital revolution, preservation professionals dream about merging traditional and digital technologies in the hope that both long-term preservation and enhanced access will be achieved. This article attempts to relate the values of the discipline in order to inspire further research and persuade more work in formulating hypotheses to integrate preservation the- ory and practice. Finally, this overview of the literature will communicate the scope of the preservation problem, clarify misconceptions in the field, and docu- ment areas that warrant further investigation and refinement. he literature representing 1999 to 2001 reveals that the preservation field is Tcontinually absorbed in an evolution. The Heritage Council is delighted that through partnership with the Institute for the Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works in Ireland, this publication, Caring for Collections, a Manual of Preventative Conservation has been produced. Written and researched by Susan Corr, this publication aims to inform the general reader of the basic concepts of collection care and good housekeeping. We hope that it will enable people to plan the long-term future of their collections in an informed way, within the resources available to them. The book will also play a key role in the continuing establishment of museum standards in Ireland. The Heritage Council would like to thank Institute for the Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works in Ireland, and Susan Corr for the help in creating this publication, which should become a vital aid in the care of our heritage.     MATERIALS INFORMATION and TECHNICAL RESOURCES for ARTISTS - Adhesives and Sizes A “size” is a material that is applied to a support (wood, fabric, etc.) to effectively seal the surface and serve as a barrier layer between the support and the paint and ground layers. Certain materials used as size will help to prevent Support Induced Discoloration (SID), a phenomenon that occurs when water-soluble impurities in the support migrate up through the ground and paint layers. A layer of size reduces the absorbency of the support, but size should not be applied too thickly. Too thick an application can lead to problems of delamination. It is best to use either a sponge or a brush and apply an even, thin solution that effectively penetrates the surface of the support. Sizing both the back and front of wooden supports will help mitigate warping of the panel. It is generally best to also size the sides of the panel. This is even more important if the support will remain unframed or is of lesser quality wood. Fabric supports, whether adhered to a rigid panel or mounted onto a stretcher, tend to shrink once properly sized. This is especially true when an animal glue size is used. Sizing reduces the absorbency of the fibers (preventing “strikethrough” or mediums/solvents from seeping through to the back of the support), protects the canvas from the acidity of certain materials (e.g. drying oils, alkyds), and creates a taut, planar surface suitable for painting. New Investigations into a Historic Treatment: The fficE acy of Gelatin as an Adhesive for Earthen Finishes at Mesa Verde National Park Abstract This thesis comes out of years of work beginning in 1994 undertaken by Frank Matero and the University of Pennsylvania to stabilize the earthen surface finishes of Mesa Verde National Park in Southwestern Colorado. The aim of this research is to better understand the performance and deterioration mechanisms for gelatin treatments used to reattach earthen plasters and washes. Threats to the treatment method include biodeterioration and failure due to wet-dry cycles and humidity fluctuations. The da hesive’s durability to these weathering phenomena was researched and evaluated through testing proxy samples in the Architectural Conservation Laboratory of the University of Pennsylvania.
