"Weißer Bär von Berlin", Februar 2020 TURNIERSTATUS Der "Weiße Bär von Berlin" ist eines der größten internationalen Herrendegenturniere der Welt. Er ist B-Qualifikationsturnier des Deutschen Fechterbundes und U23 Qualifikationsturnier der Eu- ropean Fencing Confederation (U23 European Circuit). Die Teilnehmer können je nach Herkunft und Alter Punkte für die deutsche Seniorenrangliste, die deutsche Juniorenrangliste sowie die U23 Europarangliste erhalten. Es werden 2 Sieger gekürt: der Turniersieger und der beste U23-Starter. Weiterhin gibt es traditionell den Sonderpreis des Bezirks Charlottenburg für den besten Berliner Starter. Zu Jahresbeginn ist der "Weiße Bär" immer eine wichtige Orientierung im Hinblick auf die bevor- stehenden jeweiligen Saisonhöhepunkte wie EM, WM oder Olympische Spiele. Im Jahr 2020 sind die Saisonhöhepunkte für die deutschen Fechter: • Olympische Spiele in Tokio (Japan) • Kadetten- und Junioren-Weltmeisterschaften in Salt Lake City (USA) • Europameisterschaften in Minsk (Weißrussland) • U17/U20 Europameisterschaften in Porec (Kroatien) • U23 Europameisterschaften in Liberec (CZ) Für die deutschen Herrendegenfechter ist der "Weiße Bär" wichtig als Vorbereitung auf die Sai- sonhöhepunkte sowie als Punktelieferant für die Qualifikation. Der 28-jährige erfüllte sich damit im vierten Anlauf ein lang gestecktes Ziel. 2013 war er bereits Dritter und gewann die EFC-U23-Wertung des Turniers, 2017 belegte er Platz 6 und 2018 gewann er wiederum Bronze. Mit Rico Braun (FC Tauberbischofsheim), Lukas Bellmann und Marco Brinkmann (beide TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen) schafften es gleich drei junge deutsche Top-Fechter ins Halbfinale des 59. „Weißen Bären von Berlin“. Das gab es schon sehr lange nicht mehr und unterstreicht deutlich den Aufwärtstrend im deutschen Degenfechten. Marco Brinkmann wurde Zweiter und damit nicht nur bester Deutscher, sondern auch EFC-U23 Sieger des Turniers. Er ist damit der erste Deut- sche, der diese Wertung seit ihrer Einführung im Jahr 2011 gewinnen konnte. Bester Berliner wurde Michael Behrendt vom Fechtzentrum Berlin mit Platz 46. Er löste damit den langjährigen besten Berliner Toni Kneist ab, der zwar Platz 15 belegte aber inzwischen für den FC Offenbach startet. - 2 - Presseinformation 60. "Weißer Bär von Berlin", Februar 2020 DER TURNIERORT Bereits 2016 bis 2018 wurde der "Weiße Bär" in mehreren Hallen im Haus des Deutschen Sports, im Olympiapark Berlin ausgetragen. Das Horst-Korber-Sportzentrum, der angestammte Austragungsort, wurde damals als Flüchtlingsunterkunft genutzt und anschließend saniert. Die damit verbundenen Herausforderungen wurden vom Organisationsteam hervorragend ge- meistert und für viele Teilnehmer stellte sich das historische Ambiente als außergewöhnliche und attraktive Turnierkulisse dar. Seit 2019 steht das Horst-Korber-Sportzentrum wieder als moderne Sportarena mit Platz für 24 Fechtbahnen für den „Weißen Bären von Berlin“ zur Verfügung. Allerdings wurde der Termin 2020 durch den Deutschen Fechter-Bund derart spät festgelegt, dass das HKS bereits mit einer anderen Großveranstaltung belegt war. Konstant bleibt das Galafinale im Historischen Kuppelsaal am Sonntag ab 14.00 Uhr. 1936 ei- gens für die Fechtwettkämpfe der damaligen Olympischen Spiele errichtet, ist der Kuppelsaal auch heute noch eine begeisternde Kulisse. Hier gewann die berühmte Florettfechterin Helene Mayer olympisches Silber. Sie „durfte“ damals erst nach international angedrohtem Boykott als einzige Sportlerin jüdischer Herkunft für Nazi-Deutschland bei den Olympischen Spielen starten. Im Sommer 2015 wurden im Rahmen der European Maccabi Games die Fechtwettkämpfe im Historischen Kuppelsaal gefochten, ausgerichtet vom Berliner Fechterbund. Nicht nur für die jüdi- schen Sportler war dies ein ganz besonderer und historisch einmaliger Moment. www.berliner-fechterbund.de/emg2015 Im Jahr 2009 führte der FC Grunewald erstmals ein Finale des „Weißen Bären“ im Historischen Kuppelsaal durch. 2020 finden die finalen Gefechte des 60. „Weißen Bären“ nun zum zehnten Mal hier statt. Für das Jubiläums-Galafinale im Historischen Kuppelsaal stehen 500 Plätze zur Verfügung, der Eintritt kostet 15,00€, das VIP-Ticket mit Buffet kostet 50,00€ je Person. Tickets sind auf even- tim.de verfügbar solange der Vorrat reicht. DER TURNIERMODUS Am Samstag werden die 250-300 Starter in sogenannte Vorrunden eingeteilt. Das sind Pools von je 6 oder 7 Fechtern, gesetzt nach internationalen Ranglisten. Innerhalb der Pools ficht Jeder ge- gen Jeden auf 5 Treffer (1x3 Minuten). Aus den Siegen/Niederlagen und gesetzten/erhaltenen Treffern ergibt sich ein Gesamtklasse- ment, woraus die Gefechte der Direktausscheidungen ermittelt werden. Hier wird auf 15 Treffer (3x3 Minuten) gefochten, die Verlierer scheiden aus dem Turnier aus. Am Samstagnachmittag verbleiben 64 Fechter im Turnier, die am Sonntag die Gefechte in weite- ren Direktausscheidungen auf 15 Treffer fortsetzen. Die letzten 4 Fechter ermitteln den Turnier- sieger in Halbfinalgefechten und dem Finale im Historischen Kuppelsaal (Sonntag ab 14.00 Uhr), Platz 3 wird nicht ausgefochten. DER "WEIßE BÄR" IM WANDEL Seit 1960 findet das Traditionsturnier statt und zählt damit zu den ältesten Sportveranstaltungen Berlins. Nur das Berliner 6-Tage-Rennen und das ISTAF können auf eine vergleichbare Historie verweisen. Untrennbar verbunden mit der Geschichte des "Weißen Bären" ist der Fecht-Club Grunewald Berlin e.V. Von 1990 bis 2015 führte der Verein erfolgreich Regie bei der Organisation und Durchführung des hochklassigen Fechtturniers. - 3 - Presseinformation 60. Gemeinsam wurde die Organisation und Ausrichtung des "Weißen Bären von Berlin" modernisiert und professionalisiert, um einen schritt- weisen Wandel zu einem modernen Fechtsportevent zu vollziehen. Das moderierte Galafinale im historischen Kuppelsaal ist seither ein einzigartiges Sport-Highlight für Zuschauer und Sportler. 2019 wechselte die Trägerschaft für den „Weißen Bären“ vom Fecht-Club Grunewald Berlin e.V. auf den Berliner Fechterbund e.V. Die gemeinsame Zusammenarbeit bleibt und ist auch in Zu- kunft die solide Basis, um das Traditionsturnier der Sportmetropole zu erhalten und nachhaltig fortzuführen. Viele treue, aber auch neue Partner unterstützen dabei, alle Herausforderungen zu meistern, die ein so anspruchsvolles Turnier stellt, allen voran die Sportmetropole Berlin und Premiumpartner Eventtation GmbH&Co.KG. Both the fencers use swords to attack the opponent and to defend self. There are some rules and regulations which the players have to follow while attacking or defending. Three different groups of weapons are used in fencing and each weapon has its own set of rules and regulations. Most of the fencers select one so as to specialise in using any one of these weapons. This is a sword exerting game where two fencers try to touch each other with the tip of their sword. The main objective of this game is to touch the other player and score enough points required to win the game before the opposite player scores points. There are different approved target zones based on the weapon used and players have to touch those target zones to score points. A Brief History of Fencing Fencing was initiated in the 12th century though the oldest surviving manual on swordsmanship dates around 1300. In ancient days in Rome and Egypt, fencing was quite popular and was an essential part of life in the form of swordsmanship. In the middle age, i.e. around 1400, the use of armours was introduced in order to make the game more defensive and interesting.     FIE CONGRESS IN DOHA (November 12-13, 2005) Day 1 NEW COUNTRIES Three new countries have been affiliated to the International Fencing Federation (FIE): Afghanistan, United Arab Emirates and Democratic Republic of Congo. The number of National Federations affiliated to the FIE is therefore increased to 118. STATUTES OF THE FIE The FIE will introduce two new articles to the Statutes. One ensures that the principle of non- discrimination on grounds such as the race, the sex, the ethnical belonging, the religion, the political opinions, the family status or other is respected. Second, the FIE recognises the fundamental principles of the Olympic Chart, the application of the Code of Ethics of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the competence of the Commission of Ethics of the IOC. NEW VOTING SYSTEM FOR ATHLETES COMMISSION The FIE adapts the IOC voting system of the IOC athletes commission. That means in the future each federation can only enter one athlete as candidate, independent from the discipline (foil, epee or sabre). The nomination has to be sent in two months before the first day of the World Championships, where the vote takes place. And the voting process will be simplified with less documents and bureaucracy. Six athletes will be voted by all athletes, six others will be nominated by the FIE Executive Board taking into consideration gender equity, universality and representation of all continents. CONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIPS BECOME OFFICIAL FIE COMPETITION FROM 2006/2007 SEASON In addition to the current FIE competitions, such as World Championships, World Cups or Grand Prix Events, the continental Championships, such as the European, Asian, American or African Championships, will become official FIE competitions from the season 2006/2007.
