It also served as a laboratory for many of the technical advances that have sustained the world’s defence equipment manufacturers since then. For the US Navy, it was the first opportunity to combat-test its supersonic missile- armed F-4 Phantom II fighter. Also, the British-designed angled deck had revolutionised carrier operations and made large-scale “Alpha” strikes possible. However, the US Navy also learned that the recently discarded art of air-to-air dogfighting could not be replaced so easily, and as MiG killer John Nichols pointed out, “We Americans have a tendency to trust technology more than skill, but we periodically rediscover the truth”. Nichols was an F-8 Crusader pilot, and Naval Aviators flying this aircraft had been the last to be trained in air-to-air gunnery. Indeed, the US Navy’s Fleet Air Gunner Unit (FAGU) had been closed in 1960, and F-8 “gunfighters” were the custodians of skills that were assumed to be redundant in a missile age. Their elite ethos lived on too. MiG killer Jerry B. Houston recalled that “only the top ten per cent of pilot graduates were even considered for the F-8 pipeline. They ate, breathed, thought and dreamed about fighting enemy aeroplanes all the time”. The first newly trained F-4B pilots had different ambitions based on their aircraft’s intended role as a long-range interceptor that relied on state-of-the-art missiles and radar to prevent advanced Soviet bombers from attacking capital ships. "To Patrol and Interdict: Operation Market Time" uses artifacts, images, motion picture footage and models to tell the story of USCGC TANEY's 1969-70 deployment to Vietnam within the context of the wider war. The creation of "To Patrol and Interdict" was a truly cooperative enterprise which used the combined resources of Historic Ships in Baltimore, the AMVETS Department of Maryland, and numerous TANEY sailors from the Vietnam era to pull together a compelling exhibit with a broad range of features. Professionally produced text and graphics panels were paid for through a donation from AMVETS, the well-known veterans service and advocacy organization. Special thanks to former TANEY crew who provided many compelling artifacts for the exhibit. These include a spent 5"/38 caliber cartridge casing from one of the ship's 1969 gunfire support missions, courtesy of CAPT Ted Sampson, USCG (Ret) who had served as CIC Officer during the deployment. These events were used by President Johnson to secure authority from the United States Senate, by a vote of 88-2, to take actions he deemed necessary to protect United States military personnel, national security interests, and United States allies. In this thesis, the Gulf of Tonkin incidents will be summarized and the ensuing Senate debates analyzed with a specific focus on the dissenting position of Senators Ernest Gruening (Democrat-Alaska) and Wayne Morse (Democrat-Oregon), the only members of Congress to vote against the resolution. There has been much written about the Gulf of Tonkin incident and the Congressional debate; however, there has been little focus on the continued arguments of these two senators from 1964-1968. This continuing debate over Vietnam deeply divided the Senate into three main groups who each held distinct opinions on the support they should give Johnson in relation to the issue.

The Phantom Menace: The F-4 in Air Combat in Vietnam. Master of Science (History), August 2013, 161 pp., 2 illustrations, bibliography, 84 titles. The F-4 Phantom II was the United States' primary air superiority fighter aircraft during the Vietnam War. This airplane epitomized American airpower doctrine during the early Cold War, which diminished the role of air-to-air combat and the air superiority mission. As a result, the F-4 struggled against the Soviet MiG fighters used by the North Vietnamese Air Force. By the end of the Rolling Thunder bombing campaign in 1968, the Phantom traded kills with MiGs at a nearly one-to-one ratio, the worst air combat performance in American history. The aircraft also regularly failed to protect American bombing formations from MiG attacks. A bombing halt from 1968 to 1972 provided a chance for American planners to evaluate their performance and make changes. The Navy began training pilots specifically for air combat, creating the Navy Fighter Weapons School known as "Top Gun" for this purpose. The Air Force instead focused on technological innovation and upgrades to their equipment. The resumption of bombing and air combat in the 1972 Linebacker campaigns proved that the Navy's training practices were effective, while the Air Force's technology changes were not, with kill ratios becoming worse.
