This report outlines the essential work that the CES has undertaken and highlights the importance of the CES in promoting the views of the Bishops to the Government and other national agencies, as well as supporting Catholic education in England and Wales. 2018 has been another successful year for Catholic edu - cation. On the education policy front, following the launch of Formatio in 2017, we saw the first national conference for Catholic Teaching Schools held, and it was extremely well attended. Additionally, as part of our role to promote Catholic education to those in power, we wrote to every English MP, providing them with an information pack about all the Catholic schools in their constituency.

  • Catholic Education Service Strategic Plan 2015- 2018
Catholic Education Service Strategic Plan 2015- 2018 Introduction The Catholic Education Service (CES) acts on behalf of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Eng - land and Wales to support Catholic education. We have a strong and positive working relationship with both the British and Welsh Governments, sharing the aims of high academic standards for all and increased parental choice. We represent Catholic education to the government and wider so - ciety and support our bishops, dioceses and educational institutions. We have a long history of providing education in England and Wales and there are currently over 2,000 Catholic schools educating over 800,000 pupils, around 10% of the total. There are also Catholic colleges, universities and other higher education institutions. Catholic schools and col - leges promote ' an educational philosophy in which faith, culture and life are brought into harmony '. Our sector and our organisation face a number of tasks over the next three years. This document sets out our key objectives and how we plan to reach them across five important areas: promoting Catholic education; supporting our dioceses; religious education; political engagement and com - munication; and digital engagement. Our history The Catholic Church was the first provider of schools and universities in England. The earliest schools were cathedral and monastic schools established from the late sixth century onwards. In 1847 a unique partnership was agreed with the State, and Catholic Poor-School Committee was established by the bishops of England and Wales, to represent them collectively and to focus on the promotion of Catholic elementary education for the growing Catholic population, particularly fu - elled by immigration in the big cities and industrial areas.

  • We Pray June-July
WEPRAY JUN - JUL 2019 Praying for each other in Essex & East London #chelmsdioprayers Chelmsford Diocese Prayer Diary June “...love the Lord your God. Listen to his voice and hold fast to him.” Deut 30:20 Sat 1 Justin, Martyr at Rome, c.165 One of today’s readings (Acts 18.23-end) contains the wonderful line “Apollos began to speak boldly in the synagogue; but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained the Way of God to him more accurately” (v 26). Is this the first recorded nurture group?! It is a beautiful picture of the new preacher speaking about Jesus with burning enthusiasm. But like all of us he needs guidance, people who will walk with him on the way of Christ, people who will support and sustain him on the journey. Many new Christians - especially those who have become Christians from other faith traditions – are disappointed that the Christian community fails to live up to the promise of being a new family, a new community to support them on their way. Priscilla and Aquila prompt us to respond. The Dioceses of Nebraska (The Episcopal Church), Akot (South Sudan) and Irele-Eseodo (Nigeria) Sun 2 Seventh Sunday of Easter Environment Sunday: Loving Father, we praise and thank you for the beauty and goodness of creation around us. Over the past century we have noticed the diminution of the living diversity of creation and of the health of the ecosystems that support it. Help us Lord, to respect the earth’s rich diversity and to do our part to stop further decline in the health of our planet by the way we live our lives.

It is thirty four years since the last episcopal ordination had taken place in the cathedral and Fr Alan Williams becomes the seventh Bishop of Brentwood. During the Mass, Bishop Williams said: ‘When I asked for advice from a brother bishop, he said: ‘Keep it short.’ So I will. I have been asked if I am afraid of this appointment – I am not. But one thing has always puzzled me – how can bishops wear two hats and get away with it? I had a fitting in front of a mirror recently by an Italian fitter which seemed fine but when it comes to getting them off they explode. So do be patient with me.’ “I expect the clergy have clubbed together to buy me L-plates – I need them. But I am very, very confident that the priests and the people of the diocese will look after me as I hope to do for you, by the grace of God.” I ask that you continue to support our new Bishop with your prayers in the coming weeks and months and reflect on the words of Cardinal Nichols in his homily from Tuesday’s Mass.
