We Pray June-July WEPRAY JUN - JUL 2019 Praying for each other in Essex & East London #chelmsdioprayers Chelmsford Diocese Prayer Diary June “...love the Lord your God. Listen to his voice and hold fast to him.” Deut 30:20 Sat 1 Justin, Martyr at Rome, c.165 One of today’s readings (Acts 18.23-end) contains the wonderful line “Apollos began to speak boldly in the synagogue; but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained the Way of God to him more accurately” (v 26). Is this the first recorded nurture group?! It is a beautiful picture of the new preacher speaking about Jesus with burning enthusiasm. But like all of us he needs guidance, people who will walk with him on the way of Christ, people who will support and sustain him on the journey. Many new Christians - especially those who have become Christians from other faith traditions – are disappointed that the Christian community fails to live up to the promise of being a new family, a new community to support them on their way. Priscilla and Aquila prompt us to respond. The Dioceses of Nebraska (The Episcopal Church), Akot (South Sudan) and Irele-Eseodo (Nigeria) Sun 2 Seventh Sunday of Easter Environment Sunday: Loving Father, we praise and thank you for the beauty and goodness of creation around us. Over the past century we have noticed the diminution of the living diversity of creation and of the health of the ecosystems that support it. Help us Lord, to respect the earth’s rich diversity and to do our part to stop further decline in the health of our planet by the way we live our lives. • Diocese of Chelmsford Diocesan Synod
DIOCESE OF CHELMSFORD DIOCESAN SYNOD Minutes of the 145th meeting of the Synod held on Saturday 16 June 2018 at the University of Essex PRESENT : The President and 68 Members Opening worship was led by Isabel Adcock. 1. NOTICES The Chair drew attention to the notices on the day paper. 2. MINUTES OF DIOCESAN SYNOD MEETING HELD 17 MARCH 2018 The minutes were approved. 3. STEWARDSHIP IN THE 21ST CENTURY The Chair suspended standing orders and invited the National Stewardship Adviser, John Preston, to address the Synod. The key points from this presentation were: Stewardship is our response with that entrusted to us by a generous God, in all aspects of our lives as followers of Jesus. It includes regard to money, but also in other areas. It also applies to us as individuals and as Churches. Communication is vitally important to convey the need to give. There are distinctive faith perspectives on giving and generosity. The vision, purpose and impact on giving needs to be communicated, so donors understand the difference the church is making in its community. Information on the costs and financial situation also needs to be communicated so church members can form a realistic understanding of the scale of the challenge. One method developed to combat static giving is the Parish Giving Scheme. This is now offered in 13 dioceses, with several others joining in the next year or two. 18,000 people are currently giving through the scheme nationally. The take up in Chelmsford is notably behind the curve. Churches should consider providing ways for people to give that suit them.
