Book Art in Croatia BOOK ART IN CROATIA National and University Library in Zagreb, Zagreb, 2018 Contents Foreword / 4 Centuries of Book Art in Croatia / 5 Catalogue / 21 Foreword The National and University Library in Croatia, with the aim to present and promote the Croatian cultural heritage has prepared the exhibition Book Art in Croatia. The exhibition gives a historical view of book preparation and design in Croatia from the Middle Ages to the present day. It includes manuscript and printed books on different topics and themes, from mediaeval evangelistaries and missals to contemporary illustrated editions, print portfolios and artists’ books. Featured are the items that represent the best samples of artistic book design in Croatia with regard to their graphic design and harmonious relationship between the visual and graphic layout and content. The author of the exhibition is art historian Milan Pelc, who selected 60 items for presentation on panels. In addition to the introductory essay, the publication contains the catalogue of items with short descriptions. 4 Milan Pelc CENTURIES OF BOOK ART IN CROATIA Introduction Book art, a constituent part of written culture and Croatian cultural heritage as a whole, is ex- ceptionally rich and diverse. This essay does not pretend to describe it in its entirety. Its goal is to shed light on some (key) moments in its complex historical development and point to its most important specificities. The essay does not pertain to entire Croatian literary heritage, but only to the part created on the historical Croatian territory and created by the Croats. Namely, with regard to its origins, the Croatian literary heritage can be divided into three big groups.

Annual Report 2018 Visit Us Online at OUR HOUSING

We are the solution We are the light in the midst of darkness We have the power within to change the world. - Tanya M. Trippett, MD “Who is my Neighbor?”, Educators for Humanity REPORT ANNUAL 2018 We are the light in the midst of darkness A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR and BOARD CHAIR Dear Friends, An agency, much like us, faces so many changes that can be expected and hoped for and some that are real surprises. We’ve been blessed to be building community with so many beautiful folks who are in need of shelter. In offering that ‘concrete’ service, we discover so much. Like us, our participants need community. Like us, their hopes and dreams come closer with the security of good housing. After all these years, 34 now, we can testify to the impact having a home has on the mental health of each of us. Sure we all need more than that, but without the security of knowing I’ve a place to be, other attempts of making life better for myself are built on sand. We’ve watched the impact having a home has had on our people… on their mental and physical health. It doesn’t seem like a hard concept to grasp. Yet, it surely continues to be a hard concept to have adequately funded. Housing is one prescription that doesn’t have a negative side effect. Through this publication, we hope you can feel the difference you’ve made to so many lives ― our participants and our staff, board and volunteers ― who are changed by their relationship with one another.

The outcomes of the analysis are twofold: reasons for name choice in the two communities are explored, and the application of survey methods to studies of name choice is discussed. The theoretical framework of the study is socio-onomastic, or more precisely socio- anthroponomastic, and the work explores boundaries of social intuition. It is argued that parents’ social intuition – based on rules and norms for name choice in their communities that they may not even be consciously aware of – guides them in choices related to namegiving. A survey instrument was used to collect data on naming choices and the data were analysed using both qualitative and quantitative methods. The study explored in detail five themes affecting reasons for name choice. These themes were: tradition and family, international names, aesthetic values and positive meanings, current names and special names. The process of naming is discussed in detail, as are the effects of the parents’ education and the child’s sex on name choice.

It develops a novel framework that calls both primordialist and modernist approaches to nationalism and national identity into question before applying that framework to Croatia. In doing so it not only provides a new way of thinking about how national identity is formed and why it is so important but also closely examines 1990s Croatia in a unique way. An explanation of how Croatian national identity was formed in an abstract way by a historical narrative that traces centuries of yearning for a national state is given. The book goes on to show how the government, opposition parties, dissident intellectuals and diaspora change change groups offered alternative accounts of this narrative in order to The formation legitimise contemporary political programmes based on different visions of national identity. It then looks at how these debates were in manifested in social activities as diverse as football and religion, in of Croatian economics and language. ✭ This volume marks an important contribution to both the way we national identity bellamy study nationalism and national identity and our understanding of post-Yugoslav politics and society. Our Product Is Steel. Our Strength Is

Our product is steel. Our strength is Congratulations to our colleagues who are celebrating 40 and 50-year service milestones in 2019. We are extremely proud of our team and the commitment to transforming tomorrow that they bring to work each day. Coverage of the first ever celebration in the June-July 1949 issue of the company’s employee magazine, Illustrated News. Welcome to the Club Since 1949 Each year since 1949, a distinguished group has gathered to celebrate Dofasco employees who have reached exceptional service milestones with the company. It’s a much anticipated event, with food and drink and hearty congratulations all around, highlighted with a commemorative portrait book and this special section of The Hamilton Spectator. The first annual dinner was held at the Royal Connaught Hotel in 1949 when 54 employees were welcomed to a distinguished club of employees with a Quarter Century of service. D.F. (Dan) Hassel, Vice President of Employee Relations, was Chairman of the meeting, a position he held until 1972. The celebration is called to order with the ringing of the original Quarter Century Club bell by the evening’s Master of Ceremonies. The gavel’s inscription reads: “Presented by D.F. Hassel to The Dofasco Quarter Century Club.” After more than 100 years, the tradition continues as the employees of ArcelorMittal Dofasco tip their hats each year to the newest employees on the team who have reached significant service milestones. To this year’s inductees: “Thank you for your service and congratulations on your achievement!” Quarter Century Club bell, inscribed with each chairman’s name, is rung with a gavel, donated by the first Chairman, Dan Hassel, to begin the celebration each year.

This compendium of scholarly work by RIT faculty and students represents the best of who we are as scholars and creative artists. The report provides several examples of exceptional individual and group achievements. It contains a list of the awards won, articles and books published, juried shows exhibited, and editorships undertaken by faculty members and students in 2019. I hope you take a few minutes to review the work and take pride in your own and others’ accomplishments. The scholarly and artistic efforts within this report each contribute to RIT’s growing national reputation, and many have direct and positive impacts on communities here in western New York and around the world. This work, which ranges from developing computational systems that improve care for patients with heart disease, to understanding the role of cultural and linguistic diversity for those who are Deaf and hard-of-hearing, to discovering the closest exoplanet to Earth, puts RIT and its research at the heart of some of the world’s most technical, scientific, and social challenges.
