Architect ETH, Principal at Drexler Guinand Jauslin Architects Rotterdam, Frankfurt, Zürich Abstract Contemporary architecture has been strongly influenced by the concept of landscape in recent times. A new mindset evolves that changes the core of the architectural discipline: the organization and composition of architectural space as a landscape. The scope of this thesis is to investigate and understand architecture that has been designed like a landscape. In projects of OMA, MVRDV, Peter Eisenman, Foreign Office or Diller+Scofidio the building inside and landscape outside do not merely interact, but the building is designed as an artificial landscape on its own. Landscape constitutes the inside. The landscape to architecture relation is turned inside-out. The author is studying these phenomena and their design methodologies. As a first finalized and completely documented case study the analysis of the Rolex Learning Center in Lausanne by SANAA is surely an important part of our discovery of landscape methods for architectural design. Another summer development that’s got foodies jumping for joy is a myriad of new artisan ice cream kiosks, many of which are manned by actual Italians with incredibly tasty, closely-guarded recipes. We catch up with a few Lausanne locals, who tip you off on their favourite spots for ice cream (p. 15). Summer is also the season for cultural events, not least the ever-popular Festival de la Cité – organiser Myriam Kridi tells us more later in the issue. The other date to save for this year is the quinquennial Lausanne Jardins event (p. 47). Around 20 landscape projects will be dotted along a route crossing the city from east to west, and will remain in place until 12 October.

Céline, Voyage au bout de la nuit Source d’inspiration de poètes et d’artistes, la nuit est un espace pluriel et hors du temps, où la créativité se déploie, loin du monde de la raison. Propice aux écarts, aux expériences sensibles cachées et au rêve, la nuit laisse aussi affleurer la peur et les angoisses, amplifiées par l’impression de ne plus maîtriser la réalité tangible. Dans cette première saison, la notion de peur apparaît comme thématique principale du Festival Histoire et Cité, ainsi que du Samedi des Bibliothèques. Regarder et comprendre le mystère de la nuit et du Cosmos sera au cœur de la conférence du grand astrophysicien Trinh Xuan Thuan, que nous accueillons au Forum du Rolex Learning Center. Nouveauté de l’année, le cycle Eclipse de jour vous invite à vous évader de votre quotidien, une fois par mois à midi, et à découvrir, dans le noir, des créations sonores à l'ambiance envoûtante. Enfin, les beaux jours vous permettront d'observer une créature qui ne se dévoile que la nuit et offre un spectacle stupéfiant à deux pas de chez nous. Et encore ! Une rencontre privilégiée avec l’écrivain algérien Kamel Daoud, une projection du documentaire Chris the Swiss avec sa réalisatrice Anja Kofmel et bien entendu la poursuite de notre club de culture Les Braconniers.     W Magazine September, 2010 The Closet Starchitect She has designed icons and won the Pritzker, and is curating this fall's Venice ArChitecture Biennale. So why don't you know her name? Arthyr Lubow Analytic and poetic, assertive and recessive, Kazuyo Sejima is the moonwalker of architecture, gliding in opposite directions with mindbending grace. In 2004 the Tokyo-based firm SANAA, which she and Ryue Nishizawa had formed less than a decade earlier, catapulted onto the world scene with the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, in Kanazawa, a city on the Sea of Japan. Winning the Golden Lion at that year's Venice Architecture Biennale, the museum placed SANAA and Kanazawa on the map of contemporary culture. As SANAA went on to complete increasingly prestigious commissions, including the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, Sejima herself remained as hard to pin down as her architecture. In both her buildings and her manner, she is the opposite of that other prominent female architect, Zaha Hadid. Sejima dresses, speaks, and works in a way that deliberately deflects attention. So it is with ambivalence that Sejima has responded to a year that thrust her into the spotlight. In the spring she and Nishizawa were awarded architecture's highest honor, the Pritzker Prize. They also saw the inauguration of the Rolex Learning Center, a library and student complex in Lausanne, Switzerland, that happens to be their most audaciously attention-grabbing building to date. And this fall Sejima-on her own-is curating the 12th Venice Architecture Biennale. When she was offered the position, Sejima responded typically by asking if she and Nishizawa could be codirectors.
