The first of these processes, The Architecture for the Society of Knowledge program (ASK) has existed since 2008. The second began a little more than a year ago in the format of a new PhD studies pilot-project part of ASK at the Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw University of Technology. ASK was created as a new graduate program with a global perspective. In time, it has resulted in the creation of a center not only for educators, but also for researchers dedicated to the use of digital technology in the built space. The ASK program covers work in an array of fields: the theoretical basis of creativity, changes in culture (especially the digital revolution), architectural workshop tools used in the field of analysis and creation, interdisciplinary projects based on the use of BIM models, spatial experimentation, reactive, interactive and robotic installations, heritage protection and the analysis of historical objects based on digital tools implementation, simulation and optimization aimed at protecting environmentally sensitive sites. A group of researchers within the ASK program have increasingly focused their attention on the understanding and application of experimental methods in architectural and spatial research. Due to the size, cost and timeframe of its works, architecture never undertook testing in line with the tenets of empiricism. Only recently with the use of different digital methods and representative digital models can architecture test its prototypes. The newly available methods for laboratory testing have become a basis for analytic architecture. These new experimental methods are becoming the basis for the doctoral studies at the ASK program. The PhD program is geared towards _7 the development of digital technology and enhancing environmental awareness as it relates to architecture and urban design. Professor Wojciech Gasparski says “Human civilization has just faced a serious barrier”. Currently, we see this as becoming more true: consumerism based on the exploitation of the environment inevitably leads to the destruction of both consumers and environment. This decay can be - partially - prevented through common approval for a design methodology. Societies that have accepted the need to foster positive and relevant changes, Gasparski‘s “designing societies”, naturally seek sustainable development. Methods that could allow architecture to scientifically predict future consequences and influences on the environment are crucial to designing - these - societies. Education

In this debate, the difference between the nominal façade colour and the façade colour as perceived in the cityscape was not acknowledged. The nominal colour is here defined as the colour that the surface would have if viewed in the standardised situation used in the definition of Natural Colour System (NCS) samples, including standard light, viewing distance and surrounding colours. The nominal colour is expressed through the NCS notation of the colour sample that is the most similar to the façade in direct comparison, and for a newly painted façade it corresponds to the NCS notation of the paint. The aim of the present study is to investigate the difference between perceived colour as seen from a distance of approximately thirty metres, and the nominal colour of the same façades. The method is based on previously published work by Fridell Anter using the NCS for survey and analysis. The perceived colours of nine façades are determined under different weather conditions, in a total of 84 observations. The analysis shows that the perceived blackness of the façades is generally lower than the nominal blackness.

It attempts to show this work as an artistic myth created by the artist. An analysis of the architect's texts and a reconstruction of the circumstances in which the project was realised, as well as the details of Lachert's biography reveal new layers of this architectonic palimpsest. Clear references to the bold visions of Śródmieście (City Centre) by Maciej Nowicki and an adaptation for the purposes of residential quarter / place of memory experiments at transforming rubble, popular in the 1940s, provoke questions about the originality of the concept of Muranów, whose unquestionable value is the spatial composition stemming from pioneering experiments by Katarzyna Kobro, organic architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, and Nowicki'c new functionalism. The history of the quarter is at the same time a microcosm of the initial years of rebuilding Warsaw and of the socialist realist chaos after 1949, as well as a record of the search for artistic subjectivity of a Modernist architect in a new reality.

A portrait of Stanisław Bukowski by Krystyna Wróblewska, 1941, from the collection of Joanna Łempicka Krystyna Wróblewska, Stanisławo Bukowskio portretas, 1941 Stanisław Bukowski [illus. 1] was an architect and urban planner, who earned his reputation in Polish historiography as the person behind the restoration of monuments destroyed during World War II in Białystok. The restoration of the late baroque residence of the Branicki family became his opus magnum. Yet before he arrived in Białystok in April 1945, he had spent nearly ten years living in Vilnius. Bukowski is the only architect from Białystok whose life and work have been chronicled in a monograph1. It is a summary of the research based on previous publications devoted to the architect.     “The Nude Man's City”: Flávio De Carvalho's Anthropophagic

    “The Nude Man’s City”: Flávio de Carvalho’s anthropophagic architecture as cultural criticism* Panu Minkkinen Abstract. Cannibalism is one of the most recognisable taboos of the West and a benchmark with which a supposedly civilised world has traditionally sought to differentiate itself from the radically “other” of the hinterlands. As such, cannibalism has made its way both into the vocabulary of the West’s pseudo-ethnographic self-reflection (e.g. Freud) and the imaginary of its literary culture (e.g. Grimm). A less-well-known strain in this narrative uses cannibalism as a critical postcolonial metaphor. In 1928, the Brazilian poet and agitator Oswald de Andrade published a short text entitled “Anthropophagic Manifesto.” The aim of the manifesto was to distance an emerging Brazilian modernism from the European ideals that the São Paulo bourgeoisie uncritically embraced, and to synthesise more avant-garde ideas with aspects from the cultures of the indigenous Amazonian peoples into a truly national cultural movement. This essay draws on various aspects of the anthropophagic movement and seeks to understand, whether (and how) it influenced Brazilian urban planning and architecture, and especially if it is detectable in the ways in which architects Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer designed and executed the legal and political institutions in Brasília, the country’s iconic federal capital. The analysis, however, identifies a colonialist inclination in Costa and Niemeyer’s ideological debt to Le Corbusier. Instead, the radical potential of anthropophagic architecture is developed with reference to the less-known São Paulo architect and polymath Flávio de Carvalho whose aesthetic politics provide parallels with contemporary radical politics, as well.
