My impression, and I'm nowhere near the end of reading all of Goodis, is that he is a kind of American Sartre, a two-fisted Dante being backed into a solid wall of desperation and doubt. It will allow future generations to plunge into the luxurious sensation one experiences when reading a Goodis novel, even though it never lasts for long, and is accompanied by the dismal knowledge that it will soon be over. Robin Friedman I don't feel that this is a fault, however, because I believe Goodis's surrealism is intentional. One of the problems with this is clunky plotting. How to read this? Project support for this volume was provided by the Geoffrey C. He is overly reliant on coincidence and often having a character overhear long sections of dialogue. I much-loved the anthology, especially "Street of No Return. Nicholson Baker. No trackbacks yet. And then the reach for the lever that opens the strongbox and While hitchhiking he is picked up by a woman named Irene Janney. -

U.S. Society and Values, "Contemporary U.S. Literature: Multicultura...partment of State, International Information Programs, February 2000 NATIVE AMERICAN LITERATURE: REMEMBRANCE, RENEWAL By Geary Hobson In 1969, the fiction committee for the prestigious Pulitzer Prizes in literature awarded its annual honor to N. Scott Momaday, a young professor of English at Stanford University in California, for a book entitled House Made of Dawn. The fact that Momaday's novel dealt almost entirely with Native Americans did not escape the attention of the news media or of readers and scholars of contemporary literature. Neither did the author's Kiowa Indian background. As news articles pointed out, not since Oliver LaFarge received the same honor for Laughing Boy, exactly 40 years earlier, had a so-called "Indian" novel been so honored. But whereas LaFarge was a white man writing about Indians, Momaday was an Indian -- the first Native American Pulitzer laureate. That same year, 1969, another young writer, a Sioux attorney named Vine Deloria, Jr., published Custer Died For Your Sins, subtitled "an Indian Manifesto." It examined, incisively, U.S. attitudes at the time towards Native American matters, and appeared almost simultaneously with The American Indian Speaks, an anthology of writings by various promising young American Indians -- among them Simon J. Ortiz, James Welch, Phil George, Janet Campbell and Grey Cohoe, all of whom had been only fitfully published at that point. These developments that spurred renewed -- or new -- interest in contemporary Native American writing were accompanied by the appearance around that time of two works of general scholarship on the subject, Peter Farb's Man's Rise to Civilization (1968) and Dee Brown's Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee (1970). -

DEAR FRIENDS, Thank you for joining us for the 15th Power of the Purse! Though we are coming to you from Portland, Oregon, this year’s virtual event is being broadcast to celebrated Girls Inc. supporters all throughout the country! These last 15 years have been quite a journey for us both. We vividly recall our first meeting in 2005, to discuss the concept of pairing Portland “notables” with local purse designers to create one-of-a-kind handbags to be featured at an annual, one-of-a-kind event ‒ Power of the Purse! An event concept that would fully celebrate the breadth of Portland’s highly acclaimed design community while giving voice to the expansive chorus of Portland’s leaders, artists, entrepreneurs, and philanthropists – a community of champions building the foundation for the next generation of strong, smart and bold leaders. Now 15 years later, and millions upon millions of dollars raised to champion for the empowerment of girls and an equitable society, we have the honor of Co-Chairing this 15th event. It has been an absolute honor to watch this event concept grow into a powerful platform for empowering youth. We are so grateful to be part of this movement here in Portland. Although we are unable to join together in person for this sensational event – we are still united in spirit and in fundraising – allies within our community – with an open mind and a readiness to continue empowering Girls Inc. youth – our future leaders of tomorrow. Kastely CWP Director Kathy Smathers Assistant Director Shatera Dixon Program Coordinator 713.743.3015 [email protected] This year we welcome two new and one visiting faculty member—all are exciting writers; all are compelling teachers. 2006-2007 Edition Every effort has been made to include faculty, students, and alumni news. Items not included will be published in the next edition. As we begin another academic year, I am struck by how much change the Program has endured in the past year. After the departure of several faculty members the previous year, we have hired Alexander Parsons and Mat John- son as new faculty members in fiction into tenure track positions, and we also hired Liz Waldner as a visitor in poetry for the year. Our colleague, Daniel Stern, passed away this Spring, and he will be missed. Adam Zagajew- ski will take a visiting position in the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago this year, and that Committee will most likely become his new academic home. Ed Hirsh submitted his letter of resignation this Spring, and although Ed had been in New York at the Guggenheim for the last five years, he had still officially been a member of the Creative Writing Program on leave. And Antonya Nelson returned from leave this Spring to continue her teaching at UH. So there has been much change. -

In this course, available for Professional Development, undergraduate credit, or graduate credit, we will consider those American poets whose themes, forms, and voices have given expression to visions of the city since 1850. Beginning with Walt Whitman, the great poet of nineteenth-century New York, we will explore the diverse and ever-changing environment of the modern city – from Chicago to Washington, DC, from San Francisco to Detroit – through the eyes of such poets as Carl Sandburg, Emma Lazarus, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Langston Hughes, Marianne Moore, Frank O’Hara, Gwendolyn Brooks, Allen Ginsberg, Robert Hayden, and Robert Pinsky, as well as contemporary hip hop and spoken word artists. It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow that runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset.1 Overview So spoke Crowfoot, orator of the Blackfoot Confederacy in 1890, above, on his deathbed. Even while this was not identified as poetry at the time, much of the wisdom of this Native American speaker comes across to readers poetically. Similarly, much of the poetry of Native American poets can be read simply as wisdom. Though there was a significant number of tribes, and a tremendous number of people at the time of the European invasion, each tribal language displays simultaneously a distinct identity as well as a variety of individual voices. However, the published poetry from native authors across the vast spectrum of tribal affiliations between the beginning and end of the 20th century reveal three unifying themes: (1) respecting a common reverence for the land from which each tribe came, through ceremonial poetry and songs; (2) respecting past traditions, including rituals, truths, and the words of one’s elders; and (3) expressing political criticism, even activism. Editor Kenneth Rosen writes “There may seem to be a great deal of distance between the Navajo Blessing Way chants and a contemporary poem about the confrontations at Wounded Knee, but it’s really not that far to go”.2 In fact, this curriculum unit around Native American poetry endeavors to keep pace with the ongoing experiences of native people, whose words continue to speak to the land, its mysteries, and its voice. -

The Discourse of Madness and Environmental Justice in Linda Hogan’s Novel Solar Storms Yonka Krasteva Shumen University We have stripped all things of their mystery and numinosity; nothing is holy any longer. Carl Jung The last few decades in American literature have seen the emergence of discourses that actively engage with environmental issues implying the need for a return to a spiritually informed way of life which restores the forgotten relations between human beings and the natural world. While these discourses of eco-criticism share a basic concern for environmental degradation and the ways to effect damage control and a healing of nature, they also differ in their evaluations of the relationship between the human and the natural world and in the ways goals and strategies are perceived. A number of US literary works written since 1980, such as John Cheever’s Oh What A Paradise It Seems, John DeLillo’s White Noise, and John Updike’s Rabbit At Rest articulate mainstream concerns and ideas about the environment and reflect what Cynthia Dietering terms a “toxic consciousness,” which sees the US as “post-natural” wasteland. (Adamson 56) A more politically oriented discourse which probes the connection between environ- mental degradation and class and race distinctions has emerged with what Joni Adamson calls “literature of environmental justice,” defined by the works of writers such as Leslie Mormon Silko, Louise Erdrich, Simon Ortiz, Linda Hogan, Alice Walker, and Ana Castillo, to mention just a few. These writers examine experiences of environmental racism, a term that gained currency in the debates on the environment in 1987 when the United Church of Christ’s Commission for Radical Justice published a report that found race to be the main factor in the location of toxic waste facilities (Adamson 129). -
