1 Art—Studio Art Bachelor of Arts

The Bachelor of Arts degree provides a solid foundation in the study of visual arts based on several studio disciplines.

Building upon the liberal arts curriculum, studio art majors first complete a series of introductory courses in drawing and two- and three-dimensional design. Students then select a concentration in one of seven areas: ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, printmak- ing or sculpture. Students are required to take a variety of art history courses and are encouraged to experiment outside their concentration to gain a wider working knowledge of the arts.

The B.A. degree is recommended for students who seek depth of study in the fine arts while exploring professional options outside the field. The degree is also recommended for students pursuing the education minor and for those who intend to combine graduate study with psychology/ health, technology, business or education.

Art—Studio Art Bachelor of Fine Arts

The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in studio art provides intensive study of the visual arts and prepares students for careers as professional artists and designers.

The essential purpose of the B.F.A. in studio art is to develop students’ creative and critical thinking along with strong studio skills and technical abilities, ensuring a solid foundation for graduate-level study and a professional career in the fine arts. Students select a concentration in one of six areas: ceramics, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking or sculpture.

The B.F.A. degree can be paired with any minor for an enriching educational experience. Some minors, such as business administration, graphic design, film studies and education, are particularly helpful for students interested in teaching, owning a business, or exploring emerging fields.

The B.F.A. degree is recommended for students planning to enter M.F.A. programs.

20 21 Philosophy Bachelor of Arts

To study philosophy is to seek the truth by constructing claims and making reasonable arguments for them.

Philosophy classes teach students to think critically, creatively and independently; to understand and follow the rules of logic; to communicate clearly and persuasively about a wide range of subjects and with a wide variety of audiences, both verbally and in writing; to draw connec- tions between abstract theories and concrete practices; and to have an open mind about differing views about the natural world, knowledge, politics, culture and morality. Students develop these skills, which are valuable at work, at home and in public life, by carefully reading, discussing and writing about influential texts that illuminate intellec- tual history, and contemporary texts that push us into an uncharted territory of new ideas.
