Congregando resultados e experiências de todos os que, nas suas funções quotidianas, se debruçam sobre os problemas demográficos contemporâneos, promoveu-se o intercâmbio não apenas científico mas também técnico com vista ao conhecimento aprofundado da realidade demográfica portuguesa, de modo a melhor (re)pensar e intervir em termos de futuro (de modo prospetivo). Neste sentido, este livro publica as atas do V Congresso Português de Demografia que decorreu na Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian de 6 a 7 de outubro de 2016, organizado pela Associação Portuguesa de Demografia (APD), em parceria com o Centro Interdisciplinar de História, Culturas e Sociedades (CIDEHUS) da Universidade de Évora, sob o tema A crise demográfica. Um país em extinção? Aos autores das comunicações apresentadas foi solicitada a submissão dos artigos completos que, sujeitos à arbitragem científica do Conselho Científico, constituído para o efeito, foram incluídos na presente publicação. Para além da avaliação da qualidade científica foi tida em consideração a adequação dos artigos submetidos à temática da obra em publicação. In a scenario where there is a continuous postponement of parenthood projects, it becomes crucial to verify to what extent the delayed entry into motherhood can influence the final fertility of individuals. In this paper, we intend to analyze the final fertility of a cohort of women born between 1964 and 1968 that were ending their reproductive lives in 2013. Keywords: Postponement, fertility, children, women. Sumário: A sociedade portuguesa atualmente experimenta um contexto de muito baixa fecundidade. Num cenário em que se verifica um contínuo adiamento da entrada na parentalidade torna-se de fundamental importância verificar em que medida o adiamento da entrada na maternidade pode influenciar a fecundidade final dos indivíduos. Neste trabalho pretende-se explorar a fecundidade final de uma coorte de mulheres nascidas entre 1964 e 1968 que estavam a encerrar o seu percurso reprodutivo em 2013. Palavras-chave: Adiamento, fecundidade, filhos, mulheres. 1. A fecundidade das mulheres residentes em Portugal 1.1. A evolução da fecundidade portuguesa Nos anos mais recentes Portugal vem registando um dos mais baixos níveis de fecundidade da Europa e do mundo. O país registou em 2013 e 2015, segundo o Instituto Nacional de Estatística (INE), respectivamente um índice sintético de fecundidade (ISF) de apenas 1,21 e 1,30 filhos por mulher. Entretanto, apesar do ISF ser, de forma geral, o indicador mais utilizado para mensurar o Livro de Atas

I know it’s not what many of you would have planned, but with the restrictions on foreign travel, potential quarantine rules and the inadvisability of certain types of holidays (e.g. cruises) we need to be flexible and look closer to home. Fortunately, this being Switzerland, there are a lot of options. Unfortunately the depths of human stupidity know no bounds. We know that Covid-19 is still around and we have few defenses against it, but that does not seem to stop some people acting like it doesn’t exist. Numbers are up again in many countries, and in some dramatically. Please remember that we each share a responsibility to contribute to the management of the disease as our decisions don’t affect only ourselves. So stick to the hygiene rules, maintain separation, wear a mask if in doubt and download and use the Swiss Covid app. With these relatively simple and fairly painless measures we can make a big difference to the progression of the disease, help save lives and avoid further draconian lock-down measures. As mentioned in the last newsletter, the IMCZ is starting to return to “normal”, as far as possible given the Covid guidelines. Recommendations Conclusion Introduction Modern life is full of pressures which were not around just several decades ago. Today the battle to pay off the family home and meet other financial needs is becoming increasingly more difficult. A single wage is often not sufficient. As a result more and more families are relying on two incomes to get them through. The need for out of home child care has therefore risen markedly. Moreover, the large increase in the number of single parents has also meant a greater demand for formal child care. With over $1.5 billion a year spent on child care by Australian Governments, child care is big business. And with over 600,000 children involved, it affects a lot of people.1 There is no denying that child care is a growth industry. Indeed, Commonwealth spending alone has risen 160 per cent between 1991 and 2001. In 2001 dollars it grew from $573 million to $1,490 million.2 But with the growth there have been questions raised. Concerns about child care are being expressed from a number of quarters. How does parental absence affect the child? With growing numbers of children being raised by strangers, what effects will this have on society in the near future? It is important that these questions and concerns are addressed before more growth takes place. This paper will examine some of these considerations.

The case study1 reported is applied to Porto city (Portugal), and anal- yses the spatial distribution of immigrant dwellings (according to their country of origin), as well as the distribution of work places considering immigrant dwelling locations. The developed tools, as well as their cartographic interface, also de- veloped in this research study, are particularly important in demographic and population studies, because they allow the cross-sectional characteri- zation of de¯nite population groups, as well as the anticipation of proba- ble dwelling and work location behaviours. In the case of Porto (Portugal), more than 20 years after being declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO (in 1996), tourism has had remarkable effects on its physical, social and economic features. Therefore, Porto—and in particular its city centre—is taken in this article as the object of study. The interest of this space lies in the fact that it has been rapidly transformed from a devalued old area into the centre of an important urban tourism destination on a European level. Based on the spatial and temporal analysis of a set of indicators related to tourism, housing and economic activity, we identify the main threats that this “culture-led regeneration”—much supported by tourism—could have on the cultural values of Porto.
