Objectives The purpose of the excursion is to examine a classic section that documents the major environmental shift from terrestrial to marine rocks caused by the Rhaetian transgression, as well as the Triassic-Jurassic boundary, and to sample the rich fossil faunas, and espe- cially the Rhaetian bone beds. Risk analysis Low tides are essential for the excursion to Aust Cliff. Tides rise very rapidly along this section of coast (with a tidal range of about 12 m) and strong currents sweep past the bridge abutment. Visitors should begin the excursion on a falling tide. If caught on the east side of the bridge abutment when the tide rises, visitors should continue east along the coast to the end of the cliff where a path leads back to the motorway service area. In addition, the entire section is a high cliff, and rock falls are frequent, so hard hats must be worn. The Manor Farm section lies inland and is lower, so hard hats are less necessary. -

GRAVEYARD GEOLOGY A Guide to Rocks in Graveyards and Cemeteries Wendy Kirk Department of Earth Sciences, David Cook University College London & Aldersbrook Geological Society London Geodiversity Partnership Introduction Walk around graveyards and cemeteries (in this case, those of London and the southeast of England) and it becomes apparent that, prior to the latter part of the twentieth century, many memorials were made out of just a few different rock types. These were chosen for reasons of appearance, cost, workability and ease of transport to the cemetery, as well as for resistance to weathering and dependence on local regulations. In the last few decades, a range of different, interesting and beautiful stones have appeared, many brought in from abroad, enhancing the diversity of materials used. The intention of this guide is to help a non-specialist identify the main rock types, to recognize some of the varieties and to know where some of these might have come from. Graveyards are a wonderful resource for those with an interest in geology at any level, wildlife, plants, history or sculpture. We hope you gain as much pleasure as we have done. First things first A useful place to start is to be able to distinguish between igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Igneous rocks form from melted rock called magma. If this erupts at the surface, it is called lava. It cools and crystallizes quickly, so the grains are too small to see even with a hand lens (magnifying glass). If the lava erupt explosively to form a spray, the cooled fragments are known as volcanic ash. -

A newly discovered fossil cephalopod jaw apparatus that may belong to Permian representatives of the Endocochlia is described. Permorhynchus dentatus n. gen. n. sp. is established on the basis of this ~ apparatus. The asymmetry of jaws in the Ectocochlia may be connected with the double function of the ventral jaw apparatus, and the well-developed, relatively large frontal plate of the ventral jaw should be regarded as a feature common to all representatives of ectocochlian cephalopods evolved from early Palaeozoic stock. Welcome to Alpenwelt Karwendel! These two mountain bikers have had a good laugh. They are returning from a break at Vereiner Alm. In the deep south of Germany, at the border with Austria, a pleasant valley with undula- ting meadows, lakes and streams extends between rocky peaks, forested mountain flanks and hills. Alpenwelt Karwendel with the three Upper Bavarian municipalities of Mittenwald, Krün and Wallgau is surrounded by four mountain massifs: the Karwendel mountains and the Soiern group to the East, the Ester mountains to the North and the Wetterstein mountains to the South-West. Because of this, the region is the ideal starting point for all kinds of mountain bike and cycling tours. If you like to take it easy, you can linger in the valley between the flower meadows, lakes and the expansive river landscape of the Isar with its shingle and gravel banks. If you prefer the forested foothills, explore the Ester mountains and the Soiern group with their shady forest roads and single trails.
