  • China As an Issue: Artistic and Intellectual Practices Since the Second Half of the 20Th Century, Volume 1 — Edited by Carol Yinghua Lu and Paolo Caffoni
China as an Issue: Artistic and Intellectual Practices Since the Second Half of the 20th Century, Volume 1 — Edited by Carol Yinghua Lu and Paolo Caffoni 1 China as an Issue is an ongoing lecture series orga- nized by the Beijing Inside-Out Art Museum since 2018. Chinese scholars are invited to discuss topics related to China or the world, as well as foreign schol- ars to speak about China or international questions in- volving the subject of China. Through rigorous scruti- nization of a specific issue we try to avoid making generalizations as well as the parochial tendency to reject extraterritorial or foreign theories in the study of domestic issues. The attempt made here is not only to see the world from a local Chinese perspective, but also to observe China from a global perspective. By calling into question the underlying typology of the inside and the outside we consider China as an issue requiring discussion, rather than already having an es- tablished premise. By inviting fellow thinkers from a wide range of disciplines to discuss these topics we were able to negotiate and push the parameters of art and stimulate a discourse that intersects the arts with other discursive fields. The idea to publish the first volume of China as An Issue was initiated before the rampage of the coron- avirus pandemic. When the virus was prefixed with “China,” we also had doubts about such self-titling of ours. However, after some struggles and considera- tion, we have increasingly found the importance of 2 discussing specific viewpoints and of clarifying and discerning the specific historical, social, cultural and political situations the narrator is in and how this helps us avoid discussions that lack direction or substance.

CHINA Speaks Your Language Presented by Silk Road Music www.silkroadmusic.ca This show was created with the generous support of Prologue to the Performing Arts China Speaks Your Language! Performed by Silk Road Duo: Qiu Xia He and Andre Thibault Program Description: In ancient times, Chinese explorers visited many places in the world, from Africa to Australia, and evi- dence suggests possibly North and South America. In a similar adventure and with as much excite- ment, Qiu Xia He came from China and learned that her instrument, the Chinese pipa, could speak the languages of musical traditions from around the globe. “China Speaks Your Language” is a music performance that will introduce audiences to different cul- tures through the experience, discoveries, and travels of the Silk Road Duo: Qiu Xia accompanied by multi-instrumentalist Andre Thibault. The pipa, a Chinese lute with a wide range of expression, will be the focal point. This husband-and-wife team is well equipped for their cultural voyage. Both have lived passionately as professional musicians. Their common bond and love of music have taken them on tours all over the world with award-winning groups like Silk Road Music, ASZA, Cordes en Folie and Jou Tou. They have performed from Montreal to London, from South Africa to Malaysia, from British Columbia to Hawaii. In 2004, they were featured with the Vancouver Symphony at the Orpheum to welcome His Holiness the Dalai Lama. “China Speaks Your Language” will surround the Chinese pipa with many world instruments, such as the flamenco guitar from Spain and the oud and bouzouki, lutes from the Middle East and Greece.

  • An Acoustical Comparison of East Asian and Western String Instruments C
ISMA 2014, Le Mans, France An Acoustical Comparison of East Asian and Western String Instruments C. Waltham University of British Columbia, Dept of Physics & Astronomy, 6224 Agricultural Road, Vancouver, BC, Canada V6T 1Z1 [email protected] 375 ISMA 2014, Le Mans, France Over the last two centuries, several string instruments central to Western culture have received sustained acoustical examination. Considerable progress has been made in understanding why instruments are built the way they are, although an acoustical distinction between great instruments, and the merely competent, remains elusive. Might expanding our horizons shed some light on this issue? String instruments from other cultures have not had much attention from the musical acoustics community, although there is a small but growing body of literature on East Asian instruments. This talk will review that literature and point out the contrasts and similarities between instruments of the Western and East Asian traditions. 1 Introduction The vibroacoustics of Western string instruments has been the subject of widespread study ever since technology developed to the point where it became possible to analyze the motion at frequencies upwards of a few hundred Hz. To date, however, little acoustic information about East Asian string instruments has appeared in the English-language media. In this paper I attempt to gather together what is known, and to make a case for a more systematic study not only of East Asian instruments, but all those outside the Western tradition. First let me sketch out the evolution of Western instruments over the past several centuries. Broadly, the trend has been to lighter, thinner construction, and for vibration modes that radiate well at lower frequencies, down toward the fundamental of the lowest string.
