2. Celebrate New London! City of New London OFFICE OF THE MAYOR

Hello “Celebrate New London Day” Visitors, I want to thank you for attending this great event and supporting the continued partnership between the City of New London and the United States Coast Guard. New London and the Coast Guard have enjoyed a close relation for over a century and it continues to get stronger. The City of New London is proud to be the home birth of the United States Coast Guard Barque Eagle, America’s tall ship. New London has also enjoyed great community support from the Coast Guard Academy through their work with Habitat for Humanity. These efforts are just some examples of the partnership between the Coast Guard and New London and it is only going to continue to get stronger. New London is proud that the National Coast Guard Museum is coming to downtown New London, and the City is working with the Coast Guard to make New London a national “.” Thank you for attending this event and enjoy the day at this great New London institution. Sincerely,

Daryl Justin Finizio Mayor, City of New London

SUPERINTENDENT UNITED STATES COAST GUARD ACADEMY 15 MOHEGAN AVENUE NEW LONDON, CT 06320 - 8100

Dear Fellow Members of the New London Community, Welcome to Cadet Memorial Field at the United States Coast Guard Academy! We are excited to have you join us in celebrating New London, and experiencing Bears Football as we face the Seahawks of Salve Regina. As a federal service academy we emphasize leadership, professional development and physical fitness. On our playing fields cadets learn firsthand the value of teamwork and dedication, and they carry those lessons with them in service throughout the nation and the world. Upon graduation, our cadets go directly into positions of leadership in service to others. That spirit of service is something that starts right here in New London with local community service. The Coast Guard Academy community is part of the New London Community, and we have been for over 100 years. Our relationship with the people of New London and our partnership with the City is very important to us. So please join us in cheering on the home team of cadet-athletes as they resolve to be worthy of the traditions we have celebrated right here for so many years. GO BEARS! Sincerely,

Sandra L. Stosz Rear Admiral, U.S. Coast Guard

New London Public Schools OFFICE OF THE SUPERINTENDENT

Dear Celebrate New London Communities, The over one hundred year connection between the City of New London and the USCGA is a partnership to celebrate. We all do that today in a special way. Special in that we celebrate through the students of the New London Public Schools. The Academy is an inspiration as an institution. This inspiration shows through its cadets and graduates. Today, through the USCGA's Partnership in Education Program (PIE) and other educational initiatives, the Academy also inspires our young New London students. It inspires them to think of, "what may be". To think if I work hard in school, I will also achieve in the area I choose. Through family, especially my uncle CAPT Paul Foye USCG (Ret), I, as a young New London student was fortunate to experience the CGA inspiration. We are happy to provide this to our NLPS students today. The New London Public Schools is, indeed, proud and honored to celebrate our partnership with the USCGA and the inextricable link that exists between the Academy and the City of New London.

Richard Foye Interim Superintendent of Schools

Over the next five years, New London Public Schools will receive approximately $3 million in Project Prevent federal grant funds, which will assist in providing students with school-based counseling services, assistance in coping with trauma or anxiety, and conflict resolution.

New London Public Schools is the only school district in New England to receive the federal grant.

The Project Prevent grant -which was also awarded to 22 school districts in 14 states- will allow the district to meet the needs of students directly or indirectly exposed to violence. Grant funds will also be used to create a safer and improved school environment, which may include activities to decrease incidents of harassment, bullying, violence, gang involvement and substance abuse.

Currently, the district is in the initial stages of planning and researching the best ways to implement the grant so that it will provide services for all of our students.

Kristina Jordan, the Project Prevent project director and the Supervisor of Special Services for New London Public Schools, said that following the culmination of the five-year grant, she expects closer partnerships between students, parents, families and the New London Public Schools community.

“I know that it (the result of the full implementation of Project Prevent) would be a community where there is a decrease in the types of incidents targeted by this grant … but to do this, and do it effectively, we have to partner with our district parents and the community,” she said. In the next several months, Jordan expects to begin working closely with community organizations, parent groups and civic leaders.

This year’s award amounts to $613,131 and will allow the district to fund a school resource officer, three additional psychologists, a board certified behavior analyst, a part-time psychiatrist and to organize adventure programming.

These additional positions and programming options will benefit the entire school district as it works to address the academic, social and emotional needs of our students.
