mahaswami on education

One should develop humility (Vinayam) as the first fruit of education. In the olden days the student was called Vineyan. Education that does not instill humility is no education at all. The good quality of one being able to control oneself should be cultivated first. But in practice it is among the uneducated hill tribes and those who are considered not civilised, bad qualities are not to be seen much. Where they live, there is no magistrate or high court. There are no crimes. It is only where day by day high schools, colleges, universities, etc. keep coming up, criminal activities, cheating etc. keep increasing. hum ility Sri Kanchi Mahaswami Trust | Annual Report 2019-20 9

By education we realise Truth. There are many truths. History is one truth. Geography is one truth. Mathematics is one truth. The content of truth is the greatest in Mathematics. In others there is an element of imagination. In Geography we come across names of Asia, Africa, Madras, Calcutta etc. These names were given by us. By imagination we have given names ‘Plateau’, ‘Valley’, etc. By a process of gradual elimination of all that is imaginary we arrive at the truth, that Truth is found to be God. To think of Him with real devotion is the fruit of education.

- Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswati Swamiji 68th Sankaracharya of Kanchi hum ility 10

Dual Education

I am not for advocating this method of education in the belief that complete reform is possible and we may revert back to Gurukula system of education. Yet, my desire remains that posterity should know that there existed this type of education which was very conducive for growth of a student. For this purpose, just like antiques are kept in the museum, I want that atleast some Gurukula type of schools are opened and run. Atleast a few should be made to study under this system -Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswati Swamiji, 68th Sankaracharya of Kanchi
