Sussex Hospices Trail Part 3 Arundel to Goring-By-Sea
USSEX OSPICES RAIL An 11 mile linear walk from Arundel rail S H T station to Goring-by-Sea rail station in PART 3: West Sussex, forming the third stretch of the Sussex Hospices Trail. ARUNDEL TO GORING-BY-SEA The route takes in a short stretch of the River Arun before joining long peaceful bridleways through the woodlands of the Angmering Estate. From here it is on through more woodland, through the pretty village of Patching and then Challenging Terrain up to an old Iron Age hill fort with breathtaking views. Finally the route leads you past St Barnabas House and on through Goring-by-Sea to reach the rail station. You will enjoy elegant beech woodlands, a pretty village with charming flint cottages and panoramic views across the sea. The return leg can be completed with two train 11 Miles journeys or one bus journey, each taking about an hour. The hospices of Sussex are dedicated to providing Linear specialist end-of-life care. Friends of Sussex Hospices has worked with partners and supporters to create the Sussex Hospices Trail, a 200 mile long-distance path to support 5.5 hours and raise awareness of the twelve hospice care providers that serve the adults and children of Sussex. Toilets are available at Arundel rail station at the start of 090519 the walk. If you are looking for refreshments there is a pub, The Worlds End, at about the 7 mile mark and there are several shops near Goring-by-Sea station at the end of the walk. Getting there The walk starts at Arundel rail station and ends at Goring- by-Sea rail station. -

Notes of Evidence The notes of evidence from the previous meeting on 23 July 2008 were agreed 2. Declarations of Interest There were no Declarations of Interest received. 3. Cross Solent Ferry Costs 3.1 The Chief Executive of Wightlink reported to the Commission that Wightlink Ltd was a UK Company like any other that would conduct its business in accordance with the Companies Act 2006. However, because it was not a public limited company, it did not have to comply with the Financial Services Regulations 2001. 3.2 Mr Willson outlined the position of the Macquarie European Infrastructure Fund in relation to Wightlink. The company was at present unaffected by the current economic crisis and Wightlink was still planning to invest in its services. 3.3 Members were advised that whilst such information as the incurred debt of Wightlink. when it was purchased in 2005. was available to anybody who wished to know, such information as the purchase price was not in the public domain. 3.4 Mr Willson reported on each of Wightlink’s services. -

Brighton Area Buswatch We are a branch of Bus Users, the national charity representing bus passengers Buswatch News – April 2021 Getting back to normal With most shops now open and pubs able to serve customers outside, Brighton & Hove is coming back to life. Buses are definitely getting busier. According to the latest figures from Brighton & Hove Buses, usage is now back to just over 50% of pre-Covid levels, having fallen to 10% during the first lockdown last year. It looks as though foreign holidays will be difficult again this summer which could make Brighton busier than ever. The big risk is that more visitors will use their cars, adding to congestion and causing pollution. Buswatch has been pressing for a new Park & Ride scheme to discourage motorists from driving into the City Centre. Spring in Valley Gardens The completed phases of the Valley Gardens scheme are looking delightful with spring tulips now on display, traffic running smoothly and more space for pedestrians and cyclists. Walking through this green space is a real pleasure. New bus shelters have been provided but real time next bus displays are still not available at any of the new stops. The photo on the right was taken last October and shows the post in place ready for a display board to be attached. Why has it taken so long? Full buses – how to avoid them With social distancing requirements restricting the passenger capacity on buses to around 30 on double deckers, more buses are showing ‘Sorry Bus Full’. Brighton & Hove Buses tell us all available buses are now in use at the busiest times. -

Should there be bridge to the Isle of Wight? Wightlink run two car ferry services to the Isle of Wight, one running from Portsmouth to Fishbourne and takes around 45 minutes and The other from Lymington to Yarmouth which is around a 40 minutes journey both ferries take cars, motor homes, bikes and foot passengers. • Many Isle of Wight residents joke that the island has the most expensive ferry crossing in the world. A return trip with car and two adults can come in at over £100 during high season. • "Every other island community in the British Isles which had the feasibility of a bridge has seen one built. Why is there no bridge to the Isle of Wight?" The Isle of Wight Party wants a bridge to the main land. However road bridges are very expensive to build. For example the road bridge to the Isle of Skye which opened in 1995 cost a total of £39 million to build. Some people are cross about the constant cancellations from Wightlink, Red Funnel & Hovertravel and also having to pay expensive prices to travel to and from the island. Some say it is about time the Isle of Wight was connected via a bridge to the mainland of the United Kingdom. The arguments for a fixed link include claims that it would boost the economy by creating more jobs. It would allow more people to go to the island and spend their money there. A bridge would be a faster and cheaper way to get to the island A bridge would be less dependent on weather The arguments against a bridge are Increases in traffic would put stress on the local road network, It is quite simple really - the I.O.W. -
