• Björk Reaches Beyond the Binaries
COMMUNICATOR BETWEEN WORLDS: BJÖRK REACHES BEYOND THE BINARIES Edwin F. Faulhaber A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2008 Committee: Kimberly Coates, Advisor Robert Sloane ii ABSTRACT Kimberly Coates, Advisor Icelandic pop star Björk has spent her career breaking down boundaries, blurring lines, and complicating binaries between perceived opposites. Examining a variety of both primary and secondary sources, this study looks at the ways that Björk challenges the binary constructions of “high” and “low” art, nature and technology, and feminism and traditional femininity, and also proposes that her uniquely postmodern approach to blurring boundaries can be a model for a better society in general. This study contends that Björk serves as a symbol of what might be possible if humans stopped constructing boundaries between everything from musical styles to national borders, and as a model for how people can focus on their commonalities while still respecting the freedom of individual expression. This is particularly important in the United States of America, a place where despite its infinite potential for cultural pluralism and collaboration, there are as many (or more) divisions between people based upon race, class, gender, and religion as anywhere else in the world. iii Dedicated to Morgaine iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank my committee, Dr. Kim Coates and Rob Sloane, for all of their suggestions and encouragement while I wrote this thesis. I would also like to thank Dr. Don McQuarie and Gloria Enriquez Pizana for their support and assistance, as well as a host of wonderful professors who laid the groundwork for this thesis by inspiring me along the way: Rob, Kim, Drs.

  • Sampling Haraway, Hunting Bjork: Locating a Cyborg Subjectivity
Sampling Haraway, Hunting Bjork: Locating a Cyborg Subjectivity Andrew Robbie Haraway's Cyborg in Context In the context of post-Marxist and poststructuralist thought, Donna Haraway's early writings are hardly distinctive in having a strained relationship with the binary opposition. In an article that recounts her difficult attempt to define "gender," Haraway claims that "the evidence is building of a need for a theory of 'difference' whose geometries, paradigms, and logics break out of binaries, dialectics, and nature/ culture models of any kind."l Her phrasing suggests the complexity of the problem: she does not claim either to know of or use such a theory, nor does she claim that her own writing does not continue to make productive use of various binary formulations when they suit her purposes. She seems to hint that even honest attempts at such a theory would likely be undermined by intransigent oppositions lurking in unsuspected corners of their meta-theoretical architecture. Yet the explosive fervor and potentially self-recriminatory nature of Haraway's proposition cast her as an honest theoretical adventurer who might be forgiven any dependence on an intellectual heritage that both defines the problem and must be effaced by its solution. It befits the image of Haraway-as-revolutionary to picture her improvising a massive mobile Many thanks to Chris Hasty and Alex Rehding for their comments on earlier versions of this paper. 1 Donna Haraway, Simians, Cyborgs and Women: The Reinvention of Nature (New York: Routledge, 1991), 129. repercussions 10 (2007): 57-95. 58 Robbie: Sampling Haraway, Hunting Bjijrk whose gravity might eventually render its moorings superfluous, unafraid of the contradictions that might arise along the way.

Daly, Elissa (Ph.D., Musicology, College of Music) A Fusion of Nature and Technology?: Icelandic Identity, Activism, and the Art of Björk Thesis directed by Associate Professor Jay Keister This dissertation investigates the effects of massive industrialization, technological sophistication, and environmental problems in Iceland on the music of Björk, Iceland's most renowned living musician. In the seventy-year period since Icelanders gained independence from Denmark, their perception of themselves has changed from a fishing and farming community to an urban community preoccupied with technological development. I investigate the way this shift in Icelandic identity has been expressed through the art of Iceland's pop stars with a focus on Björk. In the last twenty years, during Björk's rise to fame, Iceland has become a contender in the global economy in the areas of technology and sustainable energy.
