Mother as Forebear: How Lidiia Chukovskaia’s Sof´ia Petrovna Rewrites Maksim Gor´kii’s Mat´* Sibelan E. S. Forrester Lidiia Chukovskaia’s novella Sof´ia Petrovna (henceforth abbreviated as SP) has gained a respectable place in the canon of primary sources used in the United States to teach about the Soviet period,1 though it may appear on history syllabi more often than in (occasional) courses on Russian women writers or (more common) surveys of Russian or Soviet literature. The tendency to read and use the work as a historical document begins with the author herself: Chukovskaia consistently emphasizes its value as a testimonial and its uniqueness as a snapshot of the years when it was writ- ten. -

Exploring works by Alexander Pushkin, Nikolai Gogol, Fyodor Dostoevsky, and Faddei Bulgarin, I view tropes such as spending, counterfeiting, hoarding, and gambling, as well as plots of mad or blocked ambition, in relation to the cultural and economic history of Nicholas I’s reign and in the context of the importation of economic discourse and literary conventions from abroad. Furthermore, I consider the impact of culturally and economically conditioned affects—ambition, avarice, and embarrassment—on narrative tone. CREATURES THAT ONCE WERE MEN By MAXIM GORKY INTRODUCTORY. By G. K. CHESTERTON. It is certainly a curious fact that so many of the voices of what is called our modern religion have come from countries which are not only simple, but may even be called barbaric. A nation like Norway has a great realistic drama without having ever had either a great classical drama or a great romantic drama. A nation like Russia makes us feel its modern fiction when we have never felt its ancient fiction. It has produced its Gissing without producing its Scott. Everything that is most sad and scientific, everything that is most grim and analytical, everything that can truly be called most modern, everything that can without unreasonableness be called most morbid, comes from these fresh and untried and unexhausted nationalities. Out of these infant peoples come the oldest voices of the earth. This contradiction, like many other contradictions, is one which ought first of all to be registered as a mere fact; long before we attempt to explain why things contradict themselves, we ought, if we are honest men and good critics, to register the preliminary truth that things do contradict themselves. In this case, as I say, there are many possible and suggestive explanations. It may be, to take an example, that our modern Europe is so exhausted that even the vigorous expression of that exhaustion is difficult for every one except the most robust. It may be that all the nations are tired; and it may be that only the boldest and breeziest are not too tired to say that they are tired. -

Particularly fragile items may be restricted for preservation purposes. © 2008 Amherst College Archives and Special Collections Page 1 Haldeman-Julius “Little Blue Book” Collection SCOPE AND CONTENTS A representative but incomplete collection of the once popular “Little Blue Books,” a series of small, very inexpensive staple-bound books that were published by the Haldeman-Julius Publishing Company of Girard, Kansas between 1919 and 1978. They were the project of Emanuel Haldeman-Julius (1889-1951), a socialist reformer and newspaper publisher. The books were extremely popular across the widest possible range of American readers, both educated, sophisticated readers as well as (and more notably) the little-educated working class who could otherwise not afford to read literature. The works covered include many classics of Western literature, but also practical how-to manuals alongside frank writings on controversial or emergent social themes such as homosexuality and atheism. Works of philosophy and politics, too, are represented, including tracts written by Haldeman-Julius himself.
