  • The Diggers' Requiem 5 the Diggers' Requiem
HONOUR THEIR SPIRIT 1918-2018 AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE THE DIGGERS’ REQUIEM SATURDAY 6 OCTOBER 2018 CANBERRA PROGRAM GUIDE The Diggers’ Requiem has been co-commissioned by the Australian War Memorial and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. The Diggers’ Requiem a été commandé par le Mémorial de guerre d’Australie (Australian War Memorial) et le ministère australien des Anciens Combattants (Department of Veterans’ Affairs). The Diggers’ Requiem wurde vom australischen Kriegerdenkmal und dem australischen Veteranen-Ministerium in Auftrag gegeben. The Diggers’ Requiem band arrangements and concerts in Melbourne and Sydney as well as tonight’s concert in Canberra have been generously supported by the Australian Defence Force. MESSAGE FROM THE GOVERNOR GENERAL OF AUSTRALIA The Diggers’ Requiem is a new and bold musical and artistic work. It is evocative and reverent. A century after the Armistice, Australia’s leading composers take us through the brutality, loss and tragedy of the battles of the Somme and beyond, but ultimately also offer solace, hope and peace. This performance, produced by Chris Latham, the Australian War Memorial’s first musical artist-in-residence, boasts a choir of 70 voices, the ringing of 62,000 bells – one for each Australian life lost, and a stirring lone piper lament. It offers a unique opportunity to remember and reflect on the fate of those whose lives were lost and forever changed by this “war to end all wars”. The diggers we are thinking of are now long past, but their contribution remains with us, their spirit lives in us, and tribute is paid to their memory in the fourteen stirring, touching and reflective movements of The Diggers’ Requiem.

  • Oldham Histories Festival September 2020
OLDHAM HISTORIES FESTIVAL SEPTEMBER 2020 ~~~~~~ PART 1 Sometimes, the emphasis might seem to be on the army ... almost ignoring the contribution of the Royal Navy, the merchant navy and the Royal Flying Corps. This isn't intentional, or in any way suggesting that their sacrifices weren't as important or as great . From the beginning of 2014 we have been reminded constantly ... through the media... that 2014 is the centenary of the 'War to End War' beginning. This map shows us the main Theatres of War ... but doesn't reach far south enough to include North Africa, Suez and Colonial German East Africa, which also saw fighting throughout those years. In this short narrative, we're only going to scratch the surface of lives touched by the conflict ... what to leave out became more of a problem than what to include ... so the following is just a few examples ... looking back ... to try and help us understand just what it meant to live through those times. For one 27 year old Oldham man, the war began and ended, for him, in the first couple of days. His name was Frank Morrison and he wasn't a soldier - he was in the Royal Navy. On the 5th of August he should have been at home on leave ... but all leave had been cancelled, so he was still on board his ship, the HMS Amphion. The Amphion was a cruiser and Leader of the 3rd Destroyer Flotilla. It was returning to Harwich with survivors from a German minelayer which had been sunk by the flotilla.

ABSTRACT Recent years have seen an increasingly sophisticated debate take place with regard to the armies on the Western Front during the Great War. Some argue that the British and Imperial armies underwent a ‘learning curve’ coupled with an increasingly lavish supply of munitions, which meant that during the last three months of fighting the BEF was able to defeat the German Army as its ability to conduct operations was faster than the enemy’s ability to react. This thesis argues that 8th Division, a war-raised formation made up of units recalled from overseas, became a much more effective and sophisticated organisation by the war’s end. It further argues that the formation did not use one solution to problems but adopted a sophisticated approach dependent on the tactical situation.

Military History Trail From your starting point at Six Ways, head north up Bellevue Road and follow the sign to the Zig-Zag path. At the seating area halfway up, turn around to admire a stunning view of the Bristol Channel, the Welsh Coast and, on a clear day, North Devon. STOP 1: Viking, French and German Raiders. The two islands, Steep and Flat Holm, were used as staging posts for Viking Raids in the 9th Century. More recently they were fortified to protect the ports and harbours of the Severn estuary from French and German invaders. Upon reaching the top of the Zig-Zag, cross Dial Hill Road and take the footpath directly ahead. About 100 metres in, take the fork to the right and proceed up to the top of Dial Hill where you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. 1. STOP 2: Cold War Horror. This is the site of one of the UK’s 1,563 Royal Observer Corps (ROC) Nuclear Fallout Bunkers. It was built so that ROC personnel could enjoy a degree of safety whilst monitoring the effect of a nuclear blast in the Bristol area. The site was operational from 1959 to 1991, but nothing remains of it now apart from a few pieces of metalwork hidden in the brambles. Proceed down the hill taking the path which runs along the edge of the Cricket Field. Turn left onto Esmond Grove and then right onto Old Park Road. Cross the junction with Thackeray Road and continue on Old Park Road which veers off to the left.
