August...... 18 The 2018 year is halfway behind us and we have another six months of fun to look forward to. So far, I believe the year has gone pretty well. Our new office staff is working Calendars ...... 16-17 well and becoming the solid group of workers for Sesostris that we were expecting. Business Manager, Illustrious Sir Keith Plummer is picking up the business of the Shrine very well Celebrating Jack Lorenzen...... 19 and has added substantially to the use of our computer systems. Office Assistant Antoinia Corvettes...... 28 Tang has taken on a full time role in the office and is improving a lot of the processes for keeping track of the activities of our center. Then we have the newest member, Kellie Cruis’n Classics Car Show and Article ...... 6 Antione, who is the Sesostris hospital coordinator. All in all, we should be very Daughters of the Nile...... 28 pleased with the way they are all coming together in a very short time. There are many challenges ahead but I think they are up to the task. Donations ...... 24

Since the last writing, we have had a lot of successful activities. The circus numbers Elbon Lunch Menu ...... Back Cover are in and even though we greeted about the same number of guests into the arena, the circus netted nearly $12,000 more than the last year. Again, many thanks to the Nobility, Hospital Statistics ...... 26 their ladies and the other helpers we had for our success. Chief Rabban Richard Eggerling is already working on contracts and improvements for the 2019 circus. That will include In Memoriam...... 24 appointing a new Circus Director, as Noble Doug Dessel has announced his retirement from Iron Nobles ...... 14 that post. Many thanks go to Doug for his years of service in this capacity. If there is any Noble interested in the Circus Director position contact Richard. Membership Corner...... 26

Other activities we worked on included the 60th Annual Nebraska Shrine Bowl in Memorials...... 26 Kearney, the Soccer Classic in Omaha and a very good Spring Ceremonial. The Sesostris Nobility stepped up very well for the Shrine Bowl. Their presence was noticed and Naphis Annual Luau...... 23 appreciated. Huge thanks need to go out to Ronell Nemecek, the Shrine Bowl Committee and especially, to our Photo Pages own Shrine Bowl Club for all of their outstanding work. An Evening with Friends...... 21-22 For the membership side of our Temple, we had a great Spring Ceremonial with Ball Hospitality, Presentation and Toast .20 11 new Nobles being initiated into our ranks. It was a fun day and one of our larger spring classes in the last several years. Novices were brought in by several of our current Nobility Bob Nootz Retirement Party...... 3 from around the state. Having these Nobles recommend and then bring in the new members is what will help keep Sesostris on solid ground. Thank you for your recruiting work. Fez Walk...... 31 Besides the Ceremonial, the Membership Committee, led by Nobles Steve Bussboom and Jeff Eggerling, have been working hard on the retention of our current membership. They Grand Lodge Dinner...... 5 have had success in contacting Nobles to keep the membership active. The past few months were busy for the Shrine and the Cruis’n Classics. Members helped out at the Spring Ceremonial, Shrine Bowl and Soccer Classic, sold onions and attended many of the parades. In June, the Cruis’n Classics went on the an- nual Mystery Cruise. We met at the Shrine Center and had breakfast in the morning. We then hit the road, with the first stop at the Paul Boyer Museum of Ani- mated Carvings in Belleville, KS. After looking at all the displays we headed down the road to Camp Concordia, a former prisoner-of-war camp that oper- ated from 1943-1945 in Concordia, KS. We ate lunch at a restaurant in downtown, then headed toward the final destination of Salina KS. The next morning after breakfast at the hotel, we hit the road to Lucas KS. We stopped at the Bowl Plaza, a public where the , inside and out, are covered with mosaics created by local residents and artists. After the restroom visit we headed over to the Garden of Eden, and took a tour of this unique folk art/home attraction of S.P. Dinsmoor, retired civil war veteran and a master mason. SESOSTRIS CHANTERS UNIT

The Sesostris Chanters Unit embarks on a busy summer. Instead of being a parade unit, the Chanters Unit sings for groups. Depending on the time of year, the Chanters sing in for the elderly, civic events, and churches. The summer is devoted to singing in churches during Sunday morning services.

We are scheduled to sing in the following churches, and dates: July 8 – New Hope UMC; July 15 – Heritage Presbyterian ; July 29 – Ceresco UMC; August 19 – Friend UMC and UCC. We will have a half dozen rehearsals.

We always welcome new Nobles to come and join us. Our songs are familiar and easy to sing. We always rehearse to make sure we’re prepared. We usually arrive at the church early enough to run through the songs to be sung. This way we are ready to sing. Please come and have fun with us.

Well, we haven’t slowed down yet. A couple of us had the pleasure of cooking for the South Shrine Football Team. We got a dinner ride under our belts and are looking forward to a few more over the next two months. We have been busy planning and getting ready for Shrine Stock this year on August 18. It will feature several bands, vendors, great auction items, prizes and of course, our amazing ribs! We will also have a Poker Run on August 5. We might even let some of you four- wheeled people in on it.

Start those engines, Ride Safe, God Bless, TK

Material for FEZtivities A reminder that materials for the July/August issue are due to Laura by August 19 . Also, if you go to a Shrine event and you snap a few pictures, feel free to email them to: [email protected]. We don’t always get photos of the club and unit events, which would be nice to include in future issues . Show us what you’re up to!

BLUE VALLEY SHRINE WIDOWS

Jan McGrury - Correspondent

What a nice time we had! The Blue Valley Widows from the Beatrice Club would like to say “Thank You” to all the Shriners who made the Circus/Onion Appreciation Dinner so nice.

Enjoying it very much were: Marilyn Dissmeyer, Evalyn Fitzwater, Margie Johnson, Jan McGrury, Doris Orecky, Jackie Stake and Marilyn Stephens. Kudos to the chefs. The steaks were wonderful!

The beautiful carnation and “complimentary cookie” were a very nice touch, and much appreciated.

It was brought to our attention by our mentor, Past Potentate Ron Cerveny, that maybe we need to increase our cookie production a bit next year. Reorganization and “increased appetites “ were the reasons. Of course, the request was agreed upon by all of us.

Thanks so much guys and wives. It was wonderful. Can’t wait for next year. CORVETTE CLUB by Don Woodburn, Secretary

The Corvettes have been enjoying the parades so far this spring. Our best turnout to date was 13 Vettes at the Shrine Bowl parade. This is a great time of year for driving the cars and enjoying the people in many towns with parades. We would like to thank all the Shriners in the various towns for their support and especially for the Oasis events hosted by the warm folks in some of the towns.

An exciting fundraiser is in the works for this September. Many people have bought tickets already. A fun evening is planned for the Pla-Moor with the Bobby Lane Orchestra on September 28. Bob Benish has led this famous orchestra for many years and we expect to sell out the ballroom. Talk with any Corvette member and or the Shrine Office for tickets as the event draws closer. Sooner is better than later as the tickets are also for sale to the general public and the orchestra has a great following of fans. The tickets are selling for $12.50 each.

Many parades are on the agenda for July, August and even September, so watch for them as they are fun to see.

And Remember to always check your lug nuts. July/August 2018 Sesostris FEZtivities Page 29 SHRINE BOWL PLAYER PARENT DINNER APRIL 22, 2018 Page 30 Sesostris FEZtivities July/August 2018
