We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm. MISSION STATEMENT The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, a Catholic church dedicated to the patroness of our nation, is a place of worship, pilgrimage, evangelization and reconciliation. It offers visitors the occasion for a deepening conversion, a step forward in the journey to God, with Mary as the model for that journey. This monumental church, raised by Catholics of the United States because of their devotion to Mary the Mother of God, gives visibility to their faith and Catholic heritage. Mary’s Shrine invites people from across the country and beyond into the saving moment of faith, hope and charity, so that they may be reconciled and transformed into living symbols of Christ’s presence in the world. It is here that the faithful gather to worship God, give honor to Mary, and are sent to spread God’s word wherever they go. u Mary’s Shrine Y Fall/Winter 109665.1_BASILICA_MAILER.indd 3 8/12/20 1:22 PM Reconsecrating Our Nation to Mary, Our Mother n the first day of May, bishops from across the OUnited States joined together from their respective dioceses in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic to renew the consecration of our nation to the care and powerful intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary under her title Mother of the Church. Carmelite echoes in the Lourdes Grotto Johan Bergström-Allen When the editor of Carmel in the World asked me to write an article about the link between Carmelite spirituality and Lourdes, the famous shrine of Our Lady in south-western France, I was very happy to do so because it’s a tremendously important place in my life. I’ve been lucky enough to have gone there on pilgrimage many times, including several visits in the Jubilee Year of 2008 which marks the 150th anniversary of Mary’s apparitions to Saint Bernadette Soubirous. Carmelite friar Fr. Tony Lester, O.Carm. preaching at the Grotto in Lourdes. But before I can tell you why I think there’s a strong link between the message of Lourdes and Carmelite spirituality, there’s something I feel I have to say first: I am not a big fan of apparitions generally. There, I feel better for writing that! Let me explain… When I was a teenager (all of a decade ago), I used to be very attracted by the extraordinary (even spooky) parts of our Catholic faith. Visions, weeping statues, saints who could reveal your past and your future, stigmata, Eucharistic miracles and so on – I was fascinated by it all. And when I first came to Lourdes aged thirteen I discovered all sorts of out-of-the-ordinary things to excite me: a vision story, miraculous healings, ‘holy’ water, and enough glow-in-the-dark crucifixes and tacky religious art to fill the town’s three basilicas and numerous chapels. There’s nothing wrong with piety, of course, but it needs to be balanced and sensible.

  • The Healing Shrine of the Living Water
The Healing Shrine of The Living Water "The Heaing Shrine of the Living Water" We have God's permission to ask for healing prayer, because: He was pierced and we were healed (Is 53:5) Even Now I know that what ever you ask of God, God will give you. (Jn 11:2) The work is a 14 foot sculpture constructed of bronze and copper. The cross leans against the church roof where it collects the rainwater that pours down a flume-like cross into a pool. This action of water gives the liturgical work its title: The Healing Shrine of Living Water The water pours from the chest of Christ out the wound of His Sacred Heart, down the face of the cross to His now extended hands whose palms become the wings of a butterfly carrying the names of all the members and priests of St. John Vianney since 1916. Through His hands, over the wedding band and dripping from His fingers, the rainwater falls onto bread with the center removed, as if by a child. The flow of water continues under a cluster of grapes to represent a stream of His blood mixing with water, splashing into a gold chalice resting on a pedestal. Surrounding the pedestal is a blue rosary containing water from Lourdes, covered with blessed water from the River Jordan. Inside the chalice, half full of wine (Blood) is the center piece of bread (Body) taken from the aforementioned bread. (This imagery recalls a basic Catholic teaching.) In the green copper pool, where the chalice sits, is a steelhead fish swimming back to the Church with the letters IXOYE.

CAROLINE COUNTY. VIRGINIA Michael Trinkley Chicora Research Contribution 9 Chicora Foundation, Inc. P.O. Box 8664 Columbia. South Carolina August 1985 Introduction During December 1983 archaeologists contracted by the National Park Service Denver Service Center continued test excavations at the Jackson Shrine site, Caroline County; Virginia. This site is situated in the Virginia Piedmont, about 10 miles southwest of Fredericksburg and represents primarily a historic farmstead of the late eighteenth through mid-nineteenth centuries. While the property was granted to Major Francis Thornton in the l670s, there is no historical evidence of structures on the Fairfield plantation prior to 1782 (Linck 1983:4). The Shrine structure is known t0/have stood since 1828, but archaeological evidence suggests that occupation may date to the mid-eighteenth century (Linck 1983:5). These archaeological data indicate that the structure and site area may be related to eighteenth century plantation activities·or possibly to a tenant farmer. Consequently, the data are useful in the study of eighteenth century English plantation and farmstead lifestyles in Virginia.

Our hearts overflow with joy, our heads are bowed in gratitude to the Blessed Beauty, as we contemplate the astonishing success of the ceremony that inaugurated the Terraces of the Shrine of the Báb. The awe-inspiring, worldwide effects are reflected in the many messages being received here from different parts of the planet where telecasts of the event via satellite were seen. It is too soon to assess the immediate impact of this unexampled global proclamation of the Faith; nor can its implications for the progress of the Cause be immediately understood. There can be no doubt, however, that so vast a proclamation will accrue towards the advancement of the process of entry by troops, on which the energy of the loved ones of Bahá'u'lláh everywhere must be even more intensively focused than before. During the course of these events, we released two messages conveying our current views of the meaning of what transpired in the Holy Land.

  • Devotion to the Virgin Mary
Christianity Devotion to the Virgin Mary Devotion to the Virgin Mary Summary: Many of the global expressions of devotion to Jesus’s mother, the Virgin Mary, include shrines across the world. For American and particularly Hispanic Catholics, special reverence is often afforded to the Virgin of Guadelupe, Mary’s manifestation as an indigenous Madonna on the hill of Tepeyac in Mexico, who is now considered Patroness of all the Americas. From all over the world, immigrants to the United States have brought with them their devotion to the Virgin Mary under her many names and in her many local forms. From Poland has come devotion to Our Lady of Czestochowa, whether at a local church in Madison, Illinois or in a large urban parish in one of Chicago’s Polish Catholic neighborhoods. Those who fled from Cuba built the shrine of Our Lady of Charity, the patroness and protector of Cuba, overlooking the sea in Miami. She stands in a beautiful, large, triangular shrine, built to replicate the mantle under which she gathers and protects her children. From southern Italy have come regional and local Madonnas, such as Madonna del Carmine in what was formerly the Italian Harlem area of New York City. For many years, this “Madonna of 115th Street” held the Italian community together as it gained its footing in America. These and many other manifestations of the Virgin Mary are gathered together in the immense space of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. As early as 1846, Mary was acclaimed patroness of the United States.
