ROBERT L. VANN, 4931 Gaston Avenue, was interviewed at his residence, at which time he furnished the following information:

He recalls having a classmate by the name of JOHN PIC for slightly more than one year, during which time they were both attending the Crockett Grade School in Dallas. VANN expressed his opinion that he knew JOHN PIC, either in 1946 or 1947, when they were in the seventh grade together, just before leaving. elementary school to go to junior high school. VANN recalled that PIC had two half-brothers by the name of OSWALD. VANN had become acquainted with the older of the two OSWALD brothers, who, at that time, was approximately seven or eight years of age. VANN was unabl: to tecAl vhether that would have been a ROBERT OSWALD or a LEE HAR'1t 05WALD, but he mentioned that the OSWALD boy was some six yemx4 younger than he and JOHN PIC, and for that reason, VANN had vAvy littlo to eo with the OSWALD youngster.

AccordIrg t^ vAliWes rernllnetion, JOHN PIC and the OSWALD boy were residing, at that time, at about 4600 Victor Street, at the Prairie Street intersection, in a two-story house.

The t^'37 either VANN was able to recall was that he understood JOHN PIC had come to Dallas from New Orleans, Louisiana, and he recalls that JOHN PIC mentioned having been in some sort of boarding school or other type of institution away from home for a time when he was in Louisiana.

Since the assassination of President KENNEDY, Hr. HUTCHINSON stated that he had learned that LEE HARVEY OSWALD had resided for a time less then a mile from his grocery at 2515 West Fifth Street, Irving, Texas. He said he had identified him as a frequent customer through the appearances of OSWALD on television. The first time Mr. HUTCHINSON could recall OSWALD's coming into the store was on a Friday afternoon between - 5:30 and 6 p.m. three weeks ago. Mr. HUTCHINSON placed the date as November 8, 1963. OSWALD, he slid, came to the window at the small office enclosure at the front of the store, stating "I would like to get this check cashed" and • presenting the check. Mr. HUTCHINSON said he noted that the check was a two-party check in the amount of $189.00; that it was payable to "HARVEY OSWALD" written in ink and drawn on a counter check-form. He did not recall the maker.of the check, the bank on which it was drawn or anything by which the source of the counter check could be established. He said he did remember OSWALD's wine beceuse he considered it odd and in that having been in the grocery business forty- one years he had become accustomed to remembering the names of those tendering large checks.

There is little store traffic at 7 a.m., and usually Mr. HUTCHINSON and OSWALD were alone in this store at this time. For. this Teuton, Mr. HUTCHINSON watched OSWALD closely and said he bad attempted to make covver- cation with OSWALD without slyness. OSWALD was very tight-lipped. Hr. Mr. CLIFFORD 11:-NOSTEZN, 2214 Fairfax, (BL 3-6161), Irving, Texas, operator of Clifford's Barber Shop, 1321 South Story, Irving, Texas, advised that'since the assassination and the appearance of LEE HARVEY OSWALD on television, he had identified OSWALD as an individual who had been appearing at his barber shop for purposes of obtaining a haircut for the past two or three months, usually on a Friday evening or on Staurday morning early. • His first recollection of OSWALD was when he appeared at the shop on a Saturday two or three monthi ago at 6:30 AN, when he had just opened. Be remembers him particularly because at this time he was wearing house shoes which SHASTEEN considered out of the Ordinary. Be had commented to OSWALD concerning the house shoes and suggested that they must be quite expensive. OSWALD said, "No, not where I bought them". Then, he stated he had purchased the shoes in Old Mexico for only $1.50. 4 SUBTEEN described the house shoes worn by OSWALD as being of .a light or brilliant. yellow leather embossed with a design which he could not further describe and as having one metal fastener which SHASTEEN described as being of the type used on the slickers. (raincoats) in the years past. Vt. SHASTEEN said that OSWALD usually wore a fatigue- type clothing or Army or khaki trousers with pockets which he described as being "straight down in the front". • In all, SHASTEEN said that OSWALD had obtained seven or eight haircuts at that shop and that he never had liked any of them. Be described OSWALD as a hypercritical and disgruntled person. Be said he never had had a customer before whom he would have preferred not patronize his business. The only time OSWALD had ever conversed in any way with SHASTEEN was when they had discussed the shoes. Initial attempts by SHASTEEN to start a conversation with OSWALD by asking him where he worked received the response only of "downtown". It was evident from this, Mr. SUBTEEN said, that OSWALD preferred not to talk at all.

Occasionally, however, he would drive to the shop, driving a car which SHASTEIN had identified as be- longing to Mrs. PAZ7I, a station wagon which he had seen parked in the PAIRl's driveway. On occasions, upon leaving the barber shop, SHAME! said that he had seen OSWALD cross the street to enter Hutch's Grocery Store. On several occasions, SHABTREN said that OSWALD came to the shop in the company of a fourteen-year-old boy, whom he described as a white male, short hair, not a flat top, dark brown in color. He described his as a little bit freckled with brown eyes and stated he usually wore blue Jeans. On one occasion when. this boy came into the shop for a haircut alone, not accom- panied by OSWALD, he had made some statements which had astounded SHASTZIN, and it was for this reason that he had asked his his age and he was told that the boy was fourteen. SHASTHEN stated that the topic in the shop.at the time was foreign aid and that most in the 'shop had agreed that the United States could not buy friends. The boy, who up to that time had had nothing to say, - volunteered something to the ef6ct that, "We will only be free when everyone has the same, when everyone is equal". The boy continued in this vein, SEISMS said, espousing what he con- sidered to be Communist doctrimp. Be said he had never been able to establish the identity of the boy and only knows that he had been associated with OSWALD.

The following investigation was conducted by SA BARDWELL D. ODUM at Irving, Texas, on December 16, 1963, in an effort to identify a fourteen year old boy reportedly present with OSWALD on one occasion at Clifford's Barber Shop, Irving, Texas.

CLIFFORD I, SHASTEEN, 1321 South Story Road, operator of Clifford's Barber Shop at that address, advised that he has not been able to identify the fourteen year old boy who was in his shop on one occasion about two months ago with LEE HARVEY OSWALD. He stated that as he recalls this boy and OSWALD were in the shop on a Wednesday or Thursday at which time OSWALD had his hair cut by BERrIDLOVER. GLOVER on a later date, possibly the next Monday or Tuesday, cut the hair of the fourteen yea old boy, and at this time OSWALD was not in the shop but someone else had brought this boy to the shop and waited outside in a car.

On this occasion, SHASTEEN recalls that someone was complaining about high taxes, and the unidentified boy said that there would be no peace until all people had the same amount of possessions and that most of our trouble now was caused because the poor people had so little and the rich so much. This boy indicated that "peace" would come when all people had the same amount of wealth. SHASTEEN stated that he has not seen this boy since this time and has not been able to determine who he is. BERT GLOVER, barber in Clifford's Barber Shop, advised that he recalls cutting this boy's hair but has not been able to identify him in the neighborhood and does not know where he lives at this time. He stated that if he determines the identity of this boy he will immediately notify the Dallas Office of the FBI. Mrs. RUTH PAINE, 2515 West Fifth, Irving, Texas, advised that she has no child even as old as school age and knows of no boy of about fourteen with whom OSWALD was ever associated in the neighborhood. She further repeated 435' DL 100-10461 00:ow 2

that she had never allowed OSWALD to take her car by himself anywhere,

She stated one of her Cuban refugee acquaintances, SYLVIA-ODIO, 1816 A West _ Davis Street, Dallas, advised her telephonically on November 28, 1963, ..,4.adiek'oe that she knew LEE HARVEY OSWALD, and that he had made some talks to small groups of Cuban refugees in Dallas in the past. ODIO stated she • personally considered OSWALD brilliant and clever, and that he had i captivated the groups to whom he spoke. ODIO further reported to CONNELL during this conversation that a call had been made in recent i months by a Cuban associate of hers to an unknown source in New Orleans,_.. Iiiiiisiana, requesting information on LEE HARVEY OSWALD. ODIO volunteered that information was in turn received from the New Orleans source to the , effect that OSWALD was considered by that source in New Orleans to be a ! "double agent". The source stated OSWALD was probably trying to I infiltrate the Dallas Cuban refugee group, and that he should not be I trusted. .

CONNELL knew of no connection between JACK RUBY and LEE HARVEY OSWALD.

CONNELL voiced the opinion that General EDWIN A. WALKER and Colonel (FNU) CASTER, a close acquaintance of WALKER, have been trying to arouse the feelings of the Cuban refugees, in Dallas, against the KENNEDY administration. She based this statement upon information furnished her by various Cubans to the effect that WALKER and CASTER made speeches before Cuban groups in recent months in the Dallas area in opposition to the KENNEDY administration policies.

CONNELL further advised she met a man some months ago through SYLVIA ODIO, who was introducted'as Mr. (FNU) MARTIN from Uruguay and whom ODIO stated had tried to obtain guns for the Cuban people in their contemplated overthrow of CASTRO sometime ago. CONNELL stated she was - suspicious of MARTIN since he claimed to be an airplane engineercjihile at the same time ODIO stated he operated a washateria in Dallas. CONNELL further stated MARTIN apparently traveled out of the United States a great deal and was referred to by his Latin associates always as "Mr. Martin". CONNELL stated she has not seen or heard anything - of MARTIN in recent months from her contacts with Cuban refugees.

Miss ODIO stated that in late September or early October, 1963, two Cuban men came to her house and stated they were from JURE. They were accompanied by an individual whom they introduced as LEON OSWALD. Miss ODIO stated that based upon photographs she has seen of LEE HARVEY OSWALD she is certain that LEON OSWALD is identical with LEE HARVEY OSWALD. Miss ODIO stated she is not certain if she misunderstood the first name of LEON or if the two Cuban men who introduced OSWALD as LEON misunderstood him. Miss ODIO stated the purpose of their visit was to ask her to write some letters to various businesses in Dallas and request funds for JURE.

Miss ODIO stated that both of her parents are presently in prison in Cuba and for this reason she detained for fear her parents would be possibly harmed. These two individuals together with OSWALD then left. A few days later one of the two Cuban individuals contacted her by telephone and stated they were leaving town presumably to return'to either Miami, Florida, or Puerto Rico, the headquarters for JURE. The individual who called Miss ODIO who only gave his name asiAEOPOLDO stated he was not going to have anything further to do with LEON OSWALD since he considered him to be "loco." This individual known only as LEOPOLDO stated OSWALD did not appear sincere. Be told them he was an ex-marine and could help them in the underground however he appeared to be very cynical and seemed to think that all Cubans hated all Americans. According to LEOPOLDO, OSWALD stated "I'll bet you Cubans could kill KENNEDY for what he did to you at the Bay of Pigs." According to Miss ODIO, LEOPOLDO told them that the Cuban people bore no malice toward President KENNEDY because of the Bay of Pigs episode.
