  • Beyond the Lens the Marti & Gerrard Friedlander Collection
BEYOND THE LENS THE MARTI & GERRARD FRIEDLANDER COLLECTION Marti Friedlander’s contribution to the development of contemporary New Zealand art has been quite simply outstanding and it is with great honour that we bring you this catalogue, Beyond the Lens - The Marti and Gerrard Friedlander Collection. Celebrated and respected for her photography, but also for her generosity, in later life Marti became known to many of us through the causes that she and Gerrard supported with great passion. Breast cancer, issues of Māoridom and helping young people – all these were causes close to their hearts. Marti was an unforgettable character to those that knew her. Curious and direct, with a distinctive gravelly voice and an accent that gave away her Northern Hemisphere start in life. I was most interested to read Kathlene Fogarty’s account of Driving with Marti, mainly as I had previously assumed that Marti didn’t drive. Having lived and worked in Parnell for years, she was a most familiar figure to locals; striding purposefully up Brighton Road and determinedly around the village, frequently pausing to chat and always stopping for coffee. Known for her strong personality and love of people, Marti’s curiosity for the strange new land she came to with husband Gerrard in 1958 was borne out in the photographs she took. Over the next fifty years she famously photographed not only the landscape but it’s people – both the ordinary and the extraordinary - in a time well before the notion of celebrity existed. Her visual record of our country in a time of change and maturation is invaluable.

SOLICITORS Messrs. WILDING, PERRY & ACLAND FOREWORD a The Annual Autumn Exhibition this year has attracted a greater number of exhibitors, with a wider variety of work than in recent years. You will find that many of the paintings re present the more contemporary conception of art. We are anxious to introduce you to the work of these young New Zealand artists, and while you may perhaps find some of them difficult to follow, we think you will find many of them exciting, colourful, and vigorous. During the last hundred years, the great French painters Cezanne, Gauguin, Renoir, and later the English painters and sculptors Sutherland, Nash, and Henry Moore, to mention a few, have broken away from the traditional methods of ex pression, and the work of artists has become more individual.

Pierre Peeters Gallery presents fine examples of New Zealand paintings, works on paper and sculpture which span from the nineteenth century to the present day. For all enquiries ph (09)377 4832 or contact us at [email protected] www.ppg.net.nz Cover illustration: Len Lye, Self Portrait with Night Tree: 1947 W .S Melvin circa 1880 Wet Jacket Arm: Milford Sound Initialled Lower right ‘WSM’ Oil on opaque glass 170 x 280 mm W. S Melvin circa 1880 Lake Manapouri Initialled Lower left ‘ WSM’ Oil on opaque glass 170 x 280 mm These two works by W.S Melvin exemplify the decorative landscape painting of nineteenth century painters of the period working in New Zealand. They knowingly utilise the decorative strength of adjacent reds , soft purples and greens . Painted on what was commonly called ‘milk glass’, popular in nineteenth century applied arts, here Melvin employs this luminous medium for his deftly realised depictions of the picturesque South Island. W.S. Melvin was a nineteenth century painter who exhibited with the Otago Art Society from 1887–1913; and whose work featured in the NZ and South Seas Exhibition in Dunedin 1889–90. John Barr Clarke Hoyte (1835-1913) Coastal Inlet c.1870 Watercolour 390 x 640 mm John Barr Clarke Hoyte could produce airy, sweeping views of the picturesque, but in works like this, he combines the atmosphere and dampness of the elements of a North Island inlet, with a homely, pragmatic and altogether, endearing aspect.

Cover: lot 256, Dennis Knight Turner, Exhibition Thoughts on the Bev & Murray Gow Collection from John Gow and Ben Plumbly I remember vividly when I was twelve years old, hopping in the car with Dad, heading down the dusty rural Te Miro Road to Cambridge to meet the train from Auckland. There was a special package on this train, a painting that my parents had bought and I recall the ceremony of unwrapping and Mum and Dad’s obvious delight, but being completely perplexed by this ‘artwork’. Now I look at the Woollaston watercolour and think how farsighted they were. Dad’s love of art was fostered at Auckland University through meeting Diane McKegg (nee Henderson), the daughter of Louise Henderson. As a student he subsequently bought his first painting from Louise, an oil on paper, Rooftops Newmarket. After marrying Beverley South, their mutual interest in the arts ensured the collection’s growth. They visited exhibitions in the Waikato and Auckland and because Mother was a soprano soloist, and a member of the Hamilton Civic Bev and Murray Gow Choir, concert trips to Auckland, Tauranga, New Plymouth, Gisborne and other centres were in their Orakei home involved.
