Grahame Sydney Newsletter Winter 2015 Several significant events have occurred since the last newsletter about this time last year. On the professional front, the book on which Fi and I had been working for the previous 18 months, in tandem with Robbie Burton of Potton and Burton Publishers, finally made it onto the shelves of bookshops around New Zealand in October 2014. Robbie was determined that this comprehensive survey of more than forty years of my painting life would be a beautiful and substantial volume, and so it is: slip-cased in the standard edition form, elegantly designed and superbly printed, containing over 200 images and two substantial essays, “Grahame Sydney, Paintings 1974-2014” “Evening at Kane’s Pond.” Oil on Linen. 845mm x 1220mm. 2014. was received with enthusiasm and praise by the reviewers and market alike, and its first print run Book-related also, I was invited to appear at three Readers and sold out within five weeks. It was immediately reprinted in time Writers’ Festivals – Auckland, Dunedin and Nelson - and in each for Christmas, and that print run is now almost sold out too – a case the ‘in conversation’ events with either Robbie Burton very pleasing result for us all. The slightly posher packaged or Zara Stanhope were enjoyable occasions with excellent version, linen-boxed and limited to 300 copies, sold out within 10 audiences. I do find the hour allotted to be frustratingly brief days of release. We are also thrilled to just learn it has been though, and suspect the punters often feel the same. -

TREWICK defining feature of the Hexapoda, as the name suggests, is six legs. Also, the body comprises a head, thorax, and abdomen. The number A of abdominal segments varies, however; there are only six in the Collembola (springtails), 9–12 in the Protura, and 10 in the Diplura, whereas in all other hexapods there are strictly 11. Insects are now regarded as comprising only those hexapods with 11 abdominal segments. Whereas crustaceans are the dominant group of arthropods in the sea, hexapods prevail on land, in numbers and biomass. Altogether, the Hexapoda constitutes the most diverse group of animals – the estimated number of described species worldwide is just over 900,000, with the beetles (order Coleoptera) comprising more than a third of these. Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000). -

At the outset we had confidence in the strength and quality of contemporary New Zealand art, as well as our vision for it in a secondary market context. Nonetheless we could not have envisaged the success of our launch auction, or its effect on the wider market. Our inaugural auction in this sector achieved a quite incredible 82% sale rate by value and by volume. Record auction prices were achieved for no fewer than 18 artists. While the figures are impressive, ART+OBJECT’s commitment to contemporary art is not simply about the functioning of the marketplace, it comes from a deep engagement with the art of our time, its practitioners and the wider art environment we participate in. That is why so much care is taken with the catalogue and the pre-auction exhibition of the artworks to be offered for sale. Our plan was always to present two specialist Contemporary Art catalogues per year and the positive feedback we have received from artists, gallerists and collectors reinforces our commitment to continue offering contemporary art at auction.
