Dawson Twentieth-century scholars have extensively studied how Rousseau’s domestic discourse impacted the patriarchal ideology in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and contributed to women’s exclusion from the public sphere. Joan Landes, Lynn Hunt, and many others, argued that the French Revolution excluded women from the public sphere and confined them to the domestic realm. Joan Landes also argued that the patriarchal discourse was a mere reflection of social reality. In The Other Enlightenment, Carla Hesse argues for the women’s presence in the public sphere. One of the goals of this dissertation is to contribute to the debate by analyzing the content of the counter-discourse vii of selected women authors during the revolutionary era and examine how they challenged and subverted the patriarchal discourse. In the second chapter, I reconstruct the patriarchal discourse . I first examine the official (or legal) discourse in crucial works which remain absent from major modern sources: Jean Domat’sLoix civiles dans leur order naturel and Louis de Héricourt’s Loix ecclésiastiques de France dans leur order naturel. Then I look at how scientists like Monroe, Roussel, Lignac, Venel, and Robert used discoveries regarding woman’s physiology to create a medical discourse that justifies woman’s inferiority so as to confine them into the domestic/private sphere. I examine how intellectuals such as Rousseau, Diderot, Montesquieu, Coyer and Laclos, reinforced women’s domesticity. In chapter 3, I examine women’s participation in the early stage of the Revolution and the overt attempt by some women to claim their place in the public sphere and to challenge and subvert the oppressive patriarchal discourse through their writings. Chapter 4 focuses on Olympe de Gouges’s theater and a specific example of subversion of the patriarchal discourse: I compare the father figure in Diderot’s La Religieuse and de Gouges’s play Le Couvent, ou les Voeux forcés. By the onset of the French Revolution, these ideas had already been assimilated into the dominant discourse. Yet, although women were granted some rights, emancipation for women in the public sphere did not fully materialize, for women had been confined to the “domestic sanctuary” of family, making “nature” – that is, the physiological nature of the female body, viewed as affecting women’s psychology – the new justification for women’s exclusion from the public realm of politics. The domestic ideology, developed by Jean-Jacques Rousseau (among others),1 and echoed in the medical discourse of theoreticians such as Pierre Roussel, was to justify the exclusion of women from the public sphere and their confinement to the private sphere. Stepping out of the private sphere was seen as “unnatural,” as an aberration going against the very nature of women. 1 Many shared Rousseau’s ideas about the differences between men and women and their respective place and role within society such as Amar, Prudhomme, Fabre d’Eglantine, Chaumette, and Robespierre to name a few. 1 Nonconformist acts of self-assertion by women were highly criticized, for it was considered as a sign of deviance, transgression, and revolt by women against the prevailing norms, or as a rejection or a denial of the role presumably assigned to them by the nature of their gender. Society responded to such behavior by accusing the allegedly guilty woman of “desensitization” and a lack of femininity. Female deviance – or any deviance for that matter – is usually judged harshly and the French Revolution provided the patriarchy with the opportunity and the means to further develop and implement the domestic ideology. Many women, on the eve and in the early years of the French Revolution, encouraged by the atmosphere of reformation of the Old Regime and of the nascent Republic, challenged the authority of custom. Yet, their names fell into oblivion partly because of the male-centered discourse of the nineteenth century which mostly focused on men’s participation in the revolutionary events, and also because the patriarchy intended to minimize or even silence women’s temporary intrusion into the public sphere. Patriarchy also wanted to reinforce the domestic ideology and the idea that, while women inherently belong to the home, the public sphere is masculine. To do so, they either undermined or blamed women’s active role in the Revolution, as, for instance, was the case of Charlotte Corday, who murdered Marat in his bath. In addition, 2 historiographers drew a long list of men’s names from all the political factions, and provided detailed accounts of their actions. Official history has not only underestimated but also minimized the role played by women during the French Revolution, a role mostly reduced in the collective memory of French people to the women’s march on Versailles during the journées of October 5 and 6, 1789.

    What Was ‘The Enlightenment’? We hear about it all the time. It was a pivotal point in European history, paving the way for centuries of history afterward, but what was ‘The Enlightenment’? Why is it called ‘The Enlightenment’? Why did the period end? The Enlightenment Period is also referred to as the Age of Reason and the “long 18th century”. It stretched from 1685 to 1815. The period is characterized by thinkers and philosophers throughout Europe and the United States that believed that humanity could be changed and improved through science and reason. Thinkers looked back to the Classical period, and forward to the future, to try and create a trajectory for Europe and America during the 18th century. It was a volatile time marked by art, scientific discoveries, reformation, essays, and poetry. It begun with the American War for Independence and ended with a bang when the French Revolution shook the world, causing many to question whether ideas of egalitarianism and pure reason were at all safe or beneficial for society. Opposing schools of thought, new doctrines and scientific theories, and a belief in the good of humankind would eventually give way the Romantic Period in the 19th century. What is Enlightenment? Philosopher Immanuel Kant asked the self-same question in his essay of the same name. In the end, he came to the conclusion: “Dare to know! Have courage to use your own reason!” This was an immensely radical statement for this time period. Previously, ideas like philosophy, reason, and science – these belonged to the higher social classes, to kings and princes and clergymen.

    French Reportive Comme Clauses: a case of parenthetical adjunction Marianne Desmets Laurent Roussarie Paris X – Nanterre University Paris 7 – Denis Diderot University Paris 7 – Denis Diderot University ENS Fontenay/Saint-Cloud 1 Introduction1 The French system of reported speech exhibits a particular construction introduced by the adverb comme—often translated by as in English. We call it Reportive Comme Clause (henceforth RCC)2. This construction has not received much attention in the French literature, mostly because the range of uses of comme is wide and fairly complex. But RCCs combine a large number of interesting syntactic, lexical and semantic features that justify considering them as a distinct construction3. Among works on the English counterpart of RCCs, we can mention Ross (1967), Partee (1973), and more recently Lapointe (1991) which presents a null operator analysis. We propose an analysis of this French construction as a parenthetical adjunct clause. We show that RCCs are extraction contexts and a subtype of free relative clauses. Contra Lapointe, we claim that it is not necessary to deal with any null operators or to posit any empty categories in order to account for RCC extraction. Instead, following current HPSG accounts, we propose a SLASH treatment for this filler-gap phrase. We integrate RCCs in the type hierarchy of phrases (proposed by Sag 1997, Abeillé et al. 1998 for French) as a subtype of head-adjunct phrase and head-filler phrase. We make a distinction between parenthetical adjuncts and head-modifying adjuncts that allows a simplified treatment for parentheticals. We also present an account of direct speech and quoted argument selection which involves a new type of non-canonical realization.

    The Enlightenment and religion 4 France: the revolt of democratic Christianity and the rise of public opinion This chapter focuses on the emergence of religious toleration in France and the degree to which it was brought about by broad po- litico-religious struggle rather than by the philosophes.1 The discus- sion will, therefore, not provide the usual Enlightenment studies degree of focus upon the philosophes. Much of the research neces- sary for a revision of the role of the philosophes in France has been accumulating for several decades, but there has not yet been an at- tempt to bring together the various strands and integrate them into a critique of their role. Albeit slowly, from the mid 1960s a revision of the status of Pierre Bayle as a Calvinist fideist (discussed in earlier chapters) rather than an early philosophe has gradually gained ac- ceptance.2 Again rather slowly and mostly from the 1980s, there have been efforts to demonstrate that Christianity occupied a more important place in the development of the French Enlightenment than had hitherto been accepted.3 In particular there has been in- creased recognition of the role of Jansenism, especially in the land- mark suppression of the Jesuits.4 Much of the tale I recount in this chapter is, therefore, already well-known and I am indebted to the research of a number of scholars (some of whom have already been cited in earlier chapters) including R.     Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712–78) Jean-Jacques Rousseau was one of the greatest philosophers in western history. His critiques of the French education and political systems have become classics for the comprehensive solutions they proposed. In particular, his concept of the “general will” in politics and society has been used widely by modern politicians to condone any number of actions. The following entry is designed to give you more in-depth information about this famous philosopher. After a brief biography, several sections on Rousseau’s main works are offered to familiarize you with his ideas. Biography Jean-Jacques Rousseau was born to a middle-class family in Geneva, which was, at the time, an independent Calvinist republic in association with the Swiss Confederacy. Rousseau’s mother died shortly after his birth, and his father left when he was ten. An uncle brought up Jean-Jacques and his older brother, but at the age of fifteen or sixteen the younger Rousseau ran away after enduring a series of abusive apprenticeships. Rousseau’s decision to depart Geneva marked the beginning of a lifetime of wanderings. He took odd jobs in Turin and Savoy before meeting Madame Louise de Warens, then 29 and newly divorced from her husband. Madame de Warens acted as Rousseau’s mentor, and, for a time, his lover, but most importantly for Rousseau’s future development, she gave him a place to educate himself. Rousseau stayed at de Warens’ residence at Chambery for four years before travelling to Paris in 1742. Like many other aspiring intellectuals at the time, Rousseau hoped to find success in the cafes and salons of Paris, which was rapidly becoming a center of European Enlightenment thought.

    06.puchner 4/19/05 2:28 PM Page 111 Martin Puchner Sade’s Theatrical Passions The Theater of the Revolution The Marquis de Sade entered theater history in 1964 when the Royal Shakespeare Company, under the direction of Peter Brook, presented a play by the unknown author Peter Weiss entitled, The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade.1 Marat/Sade, as the play is usually called, became an extraordinary success story.2 By com- bining narrators with techniques developed in a multi-year workshop entitled “Theater of Cruelty,” Marat/Sade managed to link the two modernist visionaries of the theater whom everybody had considered to be irreconcilable opposites: Bertolt Brecht and Antonin Artaud. Marat/Sade not only fabricated a new revolutionary theater from the vestiges of modernism, it also coincided with a philosophical and cul- tural revision of the French revolution that had begun with Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer’s The Dialectics of Enlightenment (1944/69) and found a preliminary culmination in Michel Foucault’s History of Madness (1972). At the same time, the revival of Sade was fu- eled by the first complete publication of his work in French (1967) and by Roland Barthes’ landmark study, Sade Fourier Loyola (1971).3 Marat/Sade had thus hit a theatrical and intellectual nerve. Sade, however, belongs to theater history as more than just a char- acter in a play.Little is known about the historical Sade’s life-long pas- sion for the theater, about his work as a theater builder and manager, an actor and director.
