The Eschatologization of the Divine Conflict with the Dragon and the Sea
John Day The eschatologization of the divine conflict with the dragon and the sea Chapter 4 of God’s conflict with the dragon and the sea (Cambridge University Press: Cambridge, 1985; ISBN 0521256003) [Note: transliterated text is only approximate, due to the lack of diacritics available in the font set. Consult the original article for precision.] In the previous chapters we have considered the motif of the divine conflict with the dragon and the sea in the Old Testament from various points of view: the first chapter discussed its association with the creation of the world, the second chapter the alleged naturalization of the chaos monsters, and the third chapter the historicization of the conflict. In accordance with the principle Urzeit wird Endzeit, the conflict was also eschatologized, i.e. transposed into the future in association with the last things. From the New Testament, of course, we remember the Revelation of St John, where in Chapter 13 the oppressive Roman empire is symbolized by a seven-headed beast coming out of the sea, clearly deriving from Leviathan the seven-headed sea serpent, and ‘the false prophet’ is symbolized by a beast representing Behemoth, whilst the satanic power behind Rome is represented in Chapter 12 by a seven-headed dragon, which is overcome by the archangel Michael and thrown down from heaven.1 A detailed consideration of these New Testament passages lies outside the scope of the present monograph, however, and we shall be concerned here with Is. 27:1 and related mythological passages in the proto- apocalyptic work Is. 24-7, and in particular with Dan. -

Canaanite Pantheon ADON: (Adonis) The god of youth, beauty and regeneration. His death happens arou nd the love affair between him and the goddess Ashtarte which another god envied . He, in the form of a wild boar, attacks and kills Adonis and where his blood f ell there grows red poppies every year. However, as Ashtarte weaps for his loss, she promises to bring him back to life every spring. AKLM: Creatures who attacked Baal in the desert. Some say these creatures are gr asshopper-like. ANATH: This was a Love and War Goddess, the Venus star. She is also known for sl aying the enimies of her brother Baal much in the same way Hathor slaughtered mu ch of mankind (Anath is heavily related to Hathor). After the Defeat of Mavet an d Yam, a feast was thrown for Baal. Anath locked everyone inside, and proceeded to slay everyone (as they had all been fickle toward Baal with both Mavet and Ya m, as well as Ashtar). Baal stopped her and conveinced her that a reign of peace is what was needed. She also has confronted Mavet and was responsible for Baal' s liberation from the underworld. She is the twin sister of Marah. Daughter of A sherah. She is also known as Rahmay- "The Merciful", and as Astarte. Astarte is the Canaanite Name of Ishtar; just as Ishtar is the Babylonian Name of Inanna. I n all cases the Name means, simply, "Goddess" or "She of the Womb". ARSAY: She of the Earth. Daughter of Baal. An underworld Goddess. -
Canaanite/Ugaritic Mythology
Canaanite/Ugaritic Mythology I. Who do we mean by 'Canaanites'? Linguistically, the ancient Semites have been broadly classified into Eastern and Western groups. The Eastern group is represented most prominently by Akkadian, the language of the Assyrians and Babylonians, who inhabited the Tigris and Euphrates river valleys. The Western group is further broken down into the Southern and Northern groups. The South Western Semites inhabited Arabia and Ethiopia while the North Western Semites occupied the Levant - the regions that used to be Palestine as well as what is now Syria, Israel and Lebanon, the regions often referred to in the Bible as Canaan. Recent archaeological finds indicate that the inhabitants of the region themselves referred to the land as 'ca-na-na-um' as early as the mid-third millennium B.C.E. (Aubet p. 9) Variations on that name in reference to the country and its inhabitants continue through the first millennium B.C.E. The word appears to have two etymologies. On one end, represented by the Hebrew cana'ani the word meant merchant, an occupation for which the Canaanites were well known. On the other end, as represented by the Akkadian kinahhu, the word referred to the red-colored wool which was a key export of the region. When the Greeks encountered the Canaanites, it may have been this aspect of the term which they latched onto as they renamed the Canaanites the Phoenikes or Phoenicians, which may derive from a word meaning red or purple, and descriptive of the cloth for which the Greeks too traded. -
Echoes of Ancient Mesopotamia & Canaan
ECHOES OF ANCIENT MESOPOTAMIA & CANAAN This album is my mostly historically inspired evocation, of the lost music of ancient Mesopotamia & Canaan; but as the final track, this release also features my most recent arrangement of the reconstructed melody of an actual bronze age Hurrian Hymn to Nikkal; the oldest notated fragment of music which can still be interpreted and performed today; performed this time, on a replica of an actual surviving bronze age lyre! For most of the tracks, I play this fascinating replica of an actual, typical bronze age Canaanite form of asymmetric lyre; custom-made for me by Luthieros. The design of this lyre was based on the same proportions of a Canaanite form of lyre found in Egypt, dating to circa 1,500 BCE and which is preserved in Leiden: These types of lyres were almost certainly introduced into Egypt during the reign of the Canaanite Hyksos kings, that ruled northern Egypt as the 15th dynasty, c.1630–1523 BCE. The exotic, sitar-like tone of the bass strings of this lyre, are due to the flat- topped, groove-less bridge. As almost all the lyres still played throughout the African continent today still retain this distinctive buzzing timbre (particularly the Ethiopian begena), since the lyre originally probably came to Africa via ancient trade routes between the ancient Near East and Egypt, it is indeed far more likely, that this buzzing timbre of the lyre was much closer to the original timbre of the ancient near eastern/middle eastern lyres of antiquity. For some of the tracks, I also use the more sinister, darker timbre of my tenor register 10-string lyre - ideal for evoking the mystery of the long-forgotten pantheon of ancient Mesopotamian & Canaanite gods! CHAPTER 111: THE SYMBOLS AND THEIR INTERPRETATION 111.1 GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS Tn-enty- nine of rhe Iron Age Common stelae are engraved with sjrmbols and all the Persian period tombstones re- present shrines strongly influenced by Egyptian inaiskoi. Some stelae bear nlore than one symbol: a combination of tn-O (12,14, 28, 441%three (12, 26. 27), and inore (stele 53-59) is attested. The execution of all symbols is characterized by poor n-orkinanship and lack of professional and artistic skills. The various representations are all very crude and the represented items are often simplified beyond recog- nition. With a fem- exceptions. they are simple incisions produced by cutting tools nrith a pointed eclge. There is no general rule as to n-here rhe symbol was placed on a stele. On the inscribed tonlbstones the sym- bol may be placed above (stele 5, 7. 12, 14. 15, 25) or belon- (17, 20. 32, 35. 38, 42) the name of the deceased. In one instance (stele 241, part of the inscription is above while the rest is below the motif. In another (stele 32), the inscription is placed between two syinbols, one above and one belon- it. On the uninscribed stelae, the symbol is differently situated: it may occupy the n-hole front side of the stone (stele 10, 11. 28. 44. 45) or it may be restricted -to its upper part (stele 6. 27). In most cases hon-ever. tlle stelae n-ere sawn making it difficult to deternline the lo- cation of the mctif. Different symbols n-ere identified on the stelae: some represent astral bodies. -

RELS 203/303 Ancient Religion: Egypt to Mesopotamia Pre-Christmas Summer School, 2019 The Opening of the Mouth ceremony (1275 BC), EA 9901 (British Museum) Course Outline & Study Guide 1 COURSE DESCRIPTION RELS 203/303 examines some of the key religious practices, beliefs and texts of ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia and the Levant, ca. 3000–300 BCE. In this paper we explore the religious ideas and practices of three civilisations of the ancient world: their gods and goddesses, their temples and priests, their attempts to communicate with the divine and to exercise power via magic, as well as their foundational myths and their expectations concerning the afterlife. Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and the Levant (Syria-Aram, Palestine/Israel, Phoenicia, Philistia, and the Transjordan) fascinated early European explorers and scholars, their long-lost religious texts shedding light on the world from which Judaism, Christianity, and Islam later evolved. While demonstrating such influences, the paper will focus on understanding Ancient Near Eastern religion in its own right and in relation to debates within recent scholarship. The course will proceed around what is known as the Fertile Crescent in the Ancient Near East, traveling broadly from the east to the west: Lectures 1-9: Mesopotamia Lectures 10-16: The Levant Lectures 17-24: Egypt ABOUT THE LECTURER Deane Galbraith lectures on Judaism, Ancient Religion (Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Levantine), Paganism and Mystery Cults, and the introductory course to Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Deane’s major areas of research include the development of traditions within the Jewish Pentateuch, contemporary Evangelical prophecy movements, and resurrection stories.
