Consult the original article for precision.] In the previous chapters we have considered the motif of the divine conflict with the dragon and the sea in the Old Testament from various points of view: the first chapter discussed its association with the creation of the world, the second chapter the alleged naturalization of the chaos monsters, and the third chapter the historicization of the conflict. In accordance with the principle Urzeit wird Endzeit, the conflict was also eschatologized, i.e. transposed into the future in association with the last things. In this paper we explore the religious ideas and practices of three civilisations of the ancient world: their gods and goddesses, their temples and priests, their attempts to communicate with the divine and to exercise power via magic, as well as their foundational myths and their expectations concerning the afterlife.     THE DELICATE BALANCE BETWEEN LIFE AND DEATH SOME REMARKS ON THE PLACE OF MOT IN THE RELIGION OF UGARIT KLAAS SPRONK From December 2004 until September 2005 there was an exhibition “All about Evil” in the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam. An important element in the works of art from many parts of the world and from dif- ferent ages and in the accompanying publication (Faber 2004) is the balance between good and evil, life and death. It is a kind of order that people often ascribe to the gods and many put their hopes on the intervention of the gods when the bal- ance is disturbed, although gods are sometimes also to be blamed for this threat- ening situation. A collection of religious stories about evil appeared in conjunction with the exhibition. To this volume I contributed an introduction to and transla- tion of the Ugaritic myth of the struggle between Baal and Mot (Spronk 2004). Reading again this final section of the myth of Baal within the wider framework of the exhibition, it struck me that eventually the fight seems to end in a draw, Baal and Mot being equally strong. It inspired me to take a closer look at the Ugaritic god of death as not only a dreaded negative power but also as the necessary—and therefore positive—counterpart to the forces of life. I dedicate my findings in this short arti- cle to Marten Stol, who has contributed so much to our understanding of the ancient Near Eastern views on life and death, wishing him all the best for the life that begins at sixty-five.

Culican, University of Melbourne The purpose of this paper is twofold: firstly, to publish a number of seals and seal impressions and secondly, to discuss the iconography of these and their relatives within the wider context of Phoenician glyptic art and religion. Many of the seals published here have details closely comparable to examples already known. Phoenician seals, mostly of green jasper and carnelian, but with occasional examples in chalcedony, and sharing many common techniques of gravure, are particularly well represented from the Phoenician colonies in the West Mediterranean. Most of the pub­ lished examples come from Tharros in Sardinia1 but they are well known at Carthage,2 Utica3 and from Spain, where Ibiza,4 Villaricos5 and Gibraltm·l\ have provided examples. There is an early find of imprints of these seals from Selinunte in Sicily,' but otherwise they are rare in the Phoenician colonies of Sicily, Motya having provided a few examples,8 and none is recorded from Malta. 1.     Part IV) The BAAL System As we studied in the previous lessons, the ten plagues of Egypt were attempts by God to not only free the people of Israel from bondage of slavery , but also to the bondage of idolatry . As Israel departed Egypt, they were to leave behind four centuries of false god worship, the very gods they had grown to love. No sooner did the Israelites leave Egypt, crossing the sea and watching the Egyptian army drown, they began their grumbling. They were still trying to adjust to a God that would actually take care of their needs, unlike the gods of Egypt. Before they had over eighty different gods that “provided” hundreds of different needs, but now they have one true God, the “no other gods before Me” God, He wanted them to trust Him only. They grumbled about water; they grumbled about food; God gave them water and Manna; they began to grumble about not having meat; God gave them quail and they grumbled some more. They were having difficulty trying to connect to Him in a spiritual way. The Israelites were having a hard time with this concept of one God. Only 50 days after the crossing of the sea, Moses went up to Mount Sinai to receive the terms and condition of this covenant. While there, the people decided to bring back some of that “Old Time Religion” by holding the annual feast of “Apis”, the Egyptian cattle god. They made a golden calf and sacrificed burnt offerings to it. As this Egyptian tradition approaches the end, they danced and held an orgy.
