University of Zagreb, Croatia / Hrvoje Gomerčic. - Zagreb : Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, 1994. - 378 str. ; 24 cm ISBN 953-6062-03-08 941201087 Printed in Croatia Foreword It is customary after a certain period of time during which a journal has been in circulation that its publisher issues a bibliography of the works and papers which have appeared in that journal in order that its readers may gain as comprehensive an insight as possible into the work of the journal to date. Since Veterinarski arhiv (Veterinary Archive) has been in publication for more than sixty uninterrupted years, despite two wars of aggression against Croatia (1941-45 and 1990-92), and due to the fact that no such bibliography has ever been published, I have undertaken the task of rectifying this omission. Veterinarski arhiv is a scientific journal published by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Zagreb, under the following international designation: ISSN 0372-5480, and UDC 61:636/639:59:57, and the official abbreviation: Vet. arhiv. The dimensions of the journal are 23 x 17 cm. The journal first appeared in 1931 as a result of the combined efforts of prominent faculty professors and ten years after the faculty itself was founded. From the outset the journal has adopted the highest scientific criteria and has published only top quality, original scientific papers, the result of which was that the journal soon found its way into most of the veterinary libraries in Europe, and even beyond its shores. Veterinarski arhiv has made every effort to maintain the highest scientific standards since its inception, which is why the papers it has presented are regularly quoted in many of the most highly regarded reference journals and data bases, as well as in numerous scientific papers and books around the world. Due to a number of reasons, however, Veterinarski arhiv has so far found it impossible to find its way into the list of the most influential (and the finest) scientific journals of the world, covered by the prestigious Current Contents, published by the Institute for Scientific Information, based in Philadelphia, U.S.A.. Although publication of this distinctly scientific journal began, as we stated earlier, in 1931, our very first professional and scientific journal of veterinary medicine appeared in 1906. Unfortunately, this journal, published by the Croatian Veterinary Society, was beset by great difficulties during the existence of the Yugoslav State, being published only intermittently. Publication of this particular journal was initiated prior to the founding of a Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Zagreb, by Croatian veterinary surgeons who had completed their studies at various faculties in countries comprising the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It was also thanks to their tireless efforts that the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine was founded in Zagreb and, eventually, for the the emergence of Veterinarski arhiv. It is worthy of mention that, almost concurrently with the publication of the first issue of Veterinarski arhiv, a group of students at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Zagreb, initiated and established Veterinar (The Veterinarian), a professional journal compiled by students of veterinary medicine studying at the University of Zagreb and which was among the first of its kind in the world. Several veterinary or other, affiliated, bibliographies have been published (qq.v. Bibliography on page 361) comprising some works from the field of veterinary medicine, including those published in Veterinarski arhiv. One of the most comprehensive bibliographies to date is that compiled in 1971 by Professor Režek and which covered works produced by staff of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Zagreb. Professor Režek states in his bibliography: »The lack of any review of the discussions and articles published in the scientific journal of our faculty Veterinarski arhiv from 1931 up until today has been sorely felt«. He also points to the fact that his bibliography does not include numerous reviews of books, etc., and in reference to that he goes on to say: »A bibliography of such material must be left to another hand and another time«. One of the reasons for this bibliography being published are those very words, put on record by Professor Režek. This bibliography contains all the original data as they appear in the journal (authors:, TITLE., year/volume, first and last page., Titles of summaries) of all articles (a total of more than 3500 articles) published in Veterinarski arhiv from the time of its inception up until 1990, its sixtieth annual file without correcting rare misprints. Additionally, each individual paper, with the exception of chapter 19 (book reviews)- if not written in Croatian or English, or which has no summary in those languages, has its title translated into Croatian and English. Titles thus translated and which do not appear in Veterinarski arhiv are placed between asterisks (©). Titles of papers have been divided into nineteen narrowly defined scientific fields and then placed in chronological order within each of thosefields. Each bibliographical unit is preceded by a number denoting the section (scientific field) as well by its ordinal number within the section. The book concludes with an Authors Index comprising the names of every author, listed alphabetically by surname, who has contributed to Veterinarski arhiv. Although we have made every effort to put names to the initials of every author, we have not been completely successful and there is, therefore, a number of names which are marked only by surname and the initial letter of the first name. Every article published in the journal has been classified within a certain section, although it was sometimes difficult to decide on its placing since, according to the given criteria, it could have been placed within another field, or even several fields. Finally, we decided to adhere to the principle of one paper being designated by only a single field, which resulted in titles of individual works appearing just once. This apparent shortcoming may be compensated for by browsing through the Authors' Index, from which it is possible to discover which section contains works by individual authors. Listed alongside family and first names (sometimes only the initials of first names) are figures denoting the section number and ordinal number within the section of each individual work of the author in question. A bold-printed number indicates that the person is the sole author of the article; where a number is printed in italics it indicates a person who is the primary author, while a number in normal print indicates that the person referred to has cooperated in the writing of the given article. Since there have been a number of articles for which their authors are unknown, such articles have been listed under anonymous. During the course of the first sixty years of publication of Veterinarski arhiv, articles published therein were most often written in Croatian, less often in English and German, and, much less frequently, in Serbian, Slovene, French, and Russian. Summaries most frequently appear in Croatian, English, German, French, and Russian, and rare in Serbian and Slovene. These days, however, Veterinarski arhiv is published only in English and with Croatian-language summaries. This book is the result of many years of dedicated effort, its publication being initially planned for the early 1990s. However, the onset of the Croatian War of Independence halted all activities related to its appearance; the military aggression launched against Croatia by Serbia and Montenegro and the Yugoslav National Army serving to focus attention on more vital activities. Hence the short delay in the publication but which means that it is appearing in time to coincide with the 900th anniversary of the founding of the Diocese of Zagreb, with the 325th anniversary of the founding of the University of Zagreb, and with the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Zagreb. It is to celebrate the latter anniversary, however, that I am now able and pleased to present this book to our reading public. In conclusion, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to all those who have assisted in so many ways to make possible the publication of this book, thereby introducing to the professional public, not only of Croatia but also of the wider world, the works of those countless scientists who, for the past sixty years, have labored tirelessly in discovering scientific truths in the field of veterinary medicine. These words of introduction and some items of information about this book having been delivered, we assign it to the reading public for their assessment, trusting that it will serve well, both now and in future years, all those engaged in scientific work in the field of veterinary medicine. It is my fervent hope that it will also serve as an appropriate testimony to all those who have gone before us in this field, as well as highlighting a segment, however small, of the cultural heritage of Croatia.
