Transport for London launches accessibility films Transport for London (TfL) has recorded a series of ‘how to’ films showing what it’s like travelling in and around London and the facilities and assistance available. As part of the series, presenter Sophie Morgan (pictured left) has filmed her journey through London’s transport system to visit a . The videos aim to make London feel more accessible and managable to encourage disabled people and wheelchair users to use TfL’s services.

Visit https://tfl.gov.uk/transport-accessibility/ to watch the films and for a wealth of access information from TfL, including accessible travel stories from customers, tips for using public transport, on-board features and details on travel mentors and door-to-door transport services on offer. There’s also guides, maps, information for guide dog users and details of stations with step-free access to make your trip to the city as easy as possible. Link Up scheme for blind and partially sighted people If you’re blind or partially sighted and find outings such as visiting the theatre difficult, register for Pocklington Trust’s Link Up scheme.

The London-based service currently being developed by the charity will enable individuals with sight loss to partake in cultural activities by providing a pool of volunteer companions to join them on their trips.

The scheme is free to join and individuals will be asked to complete a form stating their interests to allow Pocklington Trust to match them up with volunteers with similar interests.

To register for the Link Up service, call the Pocklington Trust Volunteer Services Manager on 020 8996 1947 or 07891 614 947, or email [email protected] Driving to Theatreland? Get 50% off parking Driving to the theatre is an affordable option thanks to the half price Theatreland Parking Scheme offered by Q-Park. To qualify, simply present your car park ticket for validation when you attend a performance at a participating theatre. Once the ticket is validated, the car park pay machine will automatically charge you half price when paying after the performance. You can park for up to 24 hours and receive a 50% discount on the standard daily rate. The offer is valid seven days a week at London Q-Park car parks in , Chinatown, , , /, Pimlico and Burlington. All of these car parks, excluding Oxford Street, have disabled bays. For more information about the Theatreland Parking Scheme and full terms and conditions visit www.q-park.co.uk/theatreland. You will also find detailed information about disabled parking at individual car parks. How to book assisted performances Make sure you follow our tips below when booking an assisted performance: • Assisted performances are extremely popular so book as early as possible to avoid disappointment. • Make sure you let the theatre know you are booking specifically for the assisted performance. This will ensure that you are seated in the correct part of the theatre and they offer you the correct rate as many theatres offer special access rates. • For information on each theatre’s venue access information, refer to our Venue Access Guide in the middle of this brochure. The detailed guide includes information on step-free ac- cess, accessible toilets, wheelchair spaces and dedicated access contact details. Remember to let the theatre know if you have any access needs when you book. • Don’t forget, you might have to pay a booking fee on top of the ticket price and call charges may apply. From everyone at Society of London Theatre, we hope you find this brochure useful and enjoy many nights out at the theatre this summer.

Audio Description allows blind or partially sighted audiences to experience theatre; it is a live verbal commentary providing information on the visual elements of a production as it unfolds. It describes action that is essential to the understanding of the story, as well as other visual information such as the style and design, sets, costumes, facial expressions and visual jokes that might otherwise be missed. The description is delivered around the dialogue of a performance and patrons listen to it through a discreet headset.

Captioning is similar to subtitling and gives Deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people access to theatre. At a captioned performance the words are displayed on a screen (or screens), placed near the stage or in the set and can be seen at the same time as they are spoken or sung. Speakers’ names, sound effects and offstage noises are also shown. A trained captioner prepares the script in advance to mirror the rhythm and flow of the performance and the captions are delivered live as the action happens on stage. Captioning is also helpful for theatregoers whose first language is not English and students who are studying the text of a play.

Sign Language Interpreted Performances are a regular feature of London theatre, offering a wide variety of choices to deaf and hard of hearing theatregoers. An interpreter will stand in a clearly visible position and interpret the spoken and heard aspects of the show.

Relaxed Performances are designed to provide an opportunity for people with autism spectrum conditions, learning disabilities or other sensory and communication disorders to access theatre in a relaxed environment. The performances are adapted in a number of ways to reduce anxiety and create a supportive atmosphere, including adjusting light and sound levels, providing ‘chill-out’ areas and demonstrating an embracing attitude towards audience noise and movement.
